While I respect O’Neill’s right to comment, I am just disappointed that the media coverage pointed to his service as a Navy SEAL as if that were an authoritative source for his interpretation of constitutional law. Nobody, especially the law-abiding members of the NRA wants to see firearms, knives, baseball bats, or any other weapons in the hands of criminals, crazies, or terrorists. Or that law-abiding gun owners or manufacturers should be held collectively responsible for the behavior of individuals.

The disconnect is the failure of prosecutors who plea-bargain away serious gun charges in return for time-saving, career-boosting guaranteed convictions. Or the courts and mental health professionals who fail to report gun-related activities to the national database supporting background checks. Bearing in mind that criminals, crazies, and terrorists do not respect or obey any gun-related laws.

The NRA is not doing nothing! Each and every day they are promoting gun safety. Unfortunately, they cannot control individual behavior or accept responsibility for their heinous acts. Politicians who point to the NRA to advance their self-serving agendas are not only ignorant, they are doing a disservice to the nation and its citizens.

O’Neill isn’t the first Seal Team Six loudmouth. That honor is reserved for Richard Marcinko, the legendary founder and plank-holder of Seal Team Six whose best-selling books blazed the path of self-promotion after service.

Sometimes the old ways are better.

We are so screwed.
