From the Office of the Washington State Climatologist …

The Office of Washington State Climatologist (OWSC) is called by the State of Washington to serve as a credible and expert source of climate and weather information for state and local decision makers and agencies working on drought, flooding, climate change, and other related issues. When interpreting climate information or analysis, OWSC will rely foremost on peer-reviewed literature and on best practices, sometimes consulting with other experts as needed, and is willing to revise public statements in light of solid new analysis or information. Our on-going goal is to provide information to the public that is reliable and meets the highest quality standards.

What’s Next for the Pacific Northwest?

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO): La Niña Conditions

On May 13, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) announced that La Niña in the equatorial Pacific Ocean had ended and issued the final “La Niña Advisory.” Neutral conditions are present, and are expected to remain throughout the summer; the chances of neutral conditions for July through September are 78%. ENSO forecast models are projecting higher chances of a return to La Niña conditions in Fall 2021 (50%), though neutral conditions are also possible (43%). ENSO forecasts for fall will become more reliable in the coming months.

What does this mean for Washington in the coming months?

The CPC outlooks for July and beyond are showing higher chances of continued dry conditions for WA state. The CPC one month outlook for July has increased chances of above normal temperatures for most of the state. The exception is coastal WA, the Olympic Peninsula, southwest WA, and the northern Puget Sound, where there are equal chances of below, equal to, or above normal temperatures. The July precipitation outlook has increased chances of below normal precipitation statewide. The probability of below normal precipitation is higher in eastern WA including the Cascade Mountains with chances exceeding 40%.

The three-month outlook for July through September (JAS) has increased chances of above normal temperatures statewide, with probabilities exceeding 50% on the three-tier scale for southeastern WA. The JAS precipitation outlook calls for higher chances of below normal precipitation statewide.

Bottom line…

For decades Scientific American has entertained and educated me in various facets of science, especially the “Amateur Scientist” feature. Now I can barely tolerate reading what I feel is their bastardization of science and the subversion of the scientific method. With increasing politicization, Scientific American has become unreadable.

Last year, Americans learned a very damaging and expensive lesson about what happens when we allow science to be politicized and allowing so-called “experts” to drive our public policies.

Since the climate is always changing, man cannot accurately and directly detect and measure man’s contribution to climate change feedback loops amid the noise of climate’s natural variability. Man cannot affect the climate over hundreds or thousands of years, so we are not facing a planetary emergency. Moreover, man will do what man has always done, react and adapt to the environment as we find it, not as we wish it to be. Not one scientist can tell us the optimum temperature of the Earth or the optimum level of carbon dioxide.

To believe that man can alter the true drivers of climate; the Sun’s energy output in all spectral bands, cosmic rays, the Earth’s position relative to the Sun, the Earth’s precessional and rotational dynamics, the Earth's magnetosphere, plate tectonics and vulcanology, the deep ocean currents, the internal dynamics of the Earth, and the greatest greenhouse gas of all” water vapor, is sheer hubris and foolishness.  None of these natural drivers of climate can be altered by man on a global – or even a local scale.

As I tell my best friend Al, the answer is air-conditioning or blue-ice in your jockey shorts.

We are so screwed when we allow science and common sense to be perverted by corrupt politicians and their progressive communist democrat agenda.
