Under socialism and communism, the comrades are each awarded a gold medal because it is only fair and equitable …
It appears that progressive socialist democrats, pursuing their agenda of equality, tend to reduce everything to the lowest common denominator; awarding gold metals and four gold stars to children who simply choose to participate in events rather than for any individual performance, lest the little darlings see their self-esteem diminished while others are being feted for their achievements.
Beyond courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities …
Likewise, it bugs me no end to hear the progressive media describing ordinary people going about their daily activities as heroes. Yes, police officers, firefighters, and soldiers are facing mortal danger – some more than others – but while this may be admirable, courageous, and commendable, this is their chosen profession -- and simply doing a dangerous job is definitely not heroic.
How many soldiers have been awarded medals for exemplary service, yet fail to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor?
§ 3741. Medal of honor: award
The President may award, and present in the name of Congress, a medal of honor of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to a person who while a member of the Army, distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty—
(1) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
(2) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or
(3) while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

The key to heroism is acting with selfless regard of your own life to save the lives of others – pay attention here – above and beyond the call of duty. If a soldier is ordered to take out a machine gun nest with a grenade and fights off the enemy during the process, it may appear heroic, but it is not above and beyond the call of duty. However, if that same soldier realizes he and his combat comrades are in mortal danger and performs the very same act voluntarily and without regard for his life, he is eligible for the Medal of Honor – because he went above and beyond the call of duty. And while there are an unknown number of people who have performed the exact same act, most of them remain unrecognized because the circumstances surrounding their action was either not recognized at the time, or there was nobody left standing.
Bottom line …
The progressive media should be more careful when slinging around the word “hero” lest we devalue those who risk everything for their fellow human beings in a display of conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. For those who wish to understand what it take to be awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor, you may wish toread the citations that accompany the individual award.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that non-military individuals cannot be heroes, recognized or unrecognized by their peers or society, I am just saying that their actions must rise above and beyond the call of duty.
