Chris Christie's First Presidential Test: Who will he appoint to replace Senator Frank Lautenberg?

Many believe, myself included, that Chris Christie, the affable, outspoken Governor of the State of New Jersey is more than just pragmatic, he is a RINO (Republican In Name Only). Loyal, fiscally conservative, but socially liberal to the point of supporting the right of public employees to collectively bargain – thus preserving the democrat’s advantage and continuing corruption within the State of New Jersey. The fact that he found the unions to “make his numbers” has been forgiven by some of the democrats as just a governor reacting to hard times.

But here is Christie’s first test: who will he nominate as a Senator?

The oldest member of the Senate, Frank Lautenberg, 89, has passed away from viral pneumonia. Lautenberg was a democrat and old-line politician whose various health issues led him to announce that he would not be running for the Senate in 2014. Popular Newark Mayor Cory Booker is thought to be running for his seat and may have asked Chris Christie to appoint him to the position, giving him a boost in the 2014 election cycle.

Christie may be facing electoral danger …

But it's yet another moment when what's good for Christie in 2013 might not be good for him in 2016. Christie, after all, is a Republican running a state that voted for President Obama by almost 18 points. "Replacing a Democrat with a Democrat and then saying the voters should decide what happens next in November would no doubt be very well-received by Democrats and moderates," The Washington Post's Sean Sullivan writes. But that would mean Republicans who are already annoyed with Christie and his Obama-hugging antics would disown him. <Source>

Cory Booker (D)

Geraldo (R)

The New Jersey primary will be held on June 5, 2014 and currently there are four potential democrat candidates: Cory Booker; Rush Holt, Sheila Oliver, Frank Pallone, and Steve Sweeney. Poential Republicans include: Jon Bramnick, John Crowley, Michael J. Doherty, Kim Guadagno, Tom Kean, Jr., Joe Kyrillos, Leonard Lance, Kevin J. O'Toole, Bill Palatucci, Geraldo Rivera, Jon Runyan, and Jay Webber.

Current polling, which means little or nothing at this point in time, gives the lead to democrat Corey Booker with 50+ percent. Even talk show host Geraldo Rivera (R) with his name recognition is polling in the high 20s.

Bottom line …

Here we will see if Christie will appoint a strong, competitive candidate to take the democrat Senate seat in 2014 – or simply make a political appointment of little or no consequence.

Many people seem concerned that traditionally progressive democrats and even socialists are pouring money into Christie's campaign coffers. Perhaps to influence a RINO to stand up to the conservatives in his party who want additional government reforms that impact traditional democrat issues such as healthcare, the unions, affirmatve action, and housing for the poor.

P.S. A little trivia about Frank Lautenberg -- he was the founder of Automatic Data Processing, ADP, the nation-wide payroll processor.
