Christopher Dorner: Will Armed Drones Be Used Against an American Citizen in the Continental United States?
There is little or no doubt that military-style drones make an excellent aerial observation platform in difficult situations. With an array of configurable sensors, they can see at night and through some forms of weather. But the question remains, will the federal government (aka FBI) become heavily involved and possibly use military assets (i.e. WACO) to counteract Christopher Dorner?
Are the Feds setting up a media event?
POLICE plan to use spy drones in the hunt for a Rambo-style ex-soldier and policeman who has murdered three people and vowed to kill again.
They believe burly, heavily-armed Christopher Dorner is holed-up in the wilderness of California’s snow-capped San Bernardino mountains 80 miles east of Los Angeles. The burnt-out shell of his pick-up truck was discovered in the nearby resort of Big Bear, where residents and tourists have been warned to stay indoors as the search continues.
Yesterday, as a task force of 125 officers, some riding Sno-Cats in the rugged terrain, continued their search, it was revealed that Dorner has become the first human target for remotely-controlled airborne drones on US soil. A senior police source said: “The thermal imaging cameras the drones use may be our only hope of finding him. On the ground, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.”
Asked directly if drones have already been deployed, Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz, who is jointly leading the task force, said: “We are using all the tools at our disposal.” The use of drones was later confirmed by Customs and Border Patrol spokesman Ralph DeSio, who revealed agents have been prepared for Dorner to make a dash for the Mexican border since his rampage began.
He said: “This agency has been at the forefront of domestic use of drones by law enforcement. That’s all I can say at the moment.” Dorner, who was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for lying about a fellow officer he accused of misconduct, has vowed to wreak revenge by “killing officers and their families”. <Source: Man hunt for ex-soldier who shot police chief's daughter and killed policeman | World | News | Daily Express>
Considering that the federal government botched both Waco and Ruby Ridge, having them involved in a high-profile media case may become problematical as decisions may be made by politicians looking for media face time and federal agencies looking for favorable publicity to expand their domestic drone programs.
Bottom line …
There does not seem to be anything precluding an armed drone attack on an American citizen who remains a suspect at this time as no court has found Dorner guilty of a crime. This is something the American people should watch with great scrutiny lest their actions taken against Christopher Dorner explode into an anti-authoritarian movement.
It should remembered that, contrary to the belief of most Americans, the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building by Timothy McVeigh was in direct response to the government’s actions in Ruby Ridge and Waco. The bombing on April 19, 1995 coincided with the two-year anniversary of the Waco siege. McVeigh said that his original target was the controversial sniper who was present at both incidents – and as some believe, may have actually precipitated the gunfire at Waco.
We apparently have entered an era where corrupt politicians with enormous appetites for media attention, photo ops and posturing seem to be interfering with the judgement of trained professionals. In some instances, these politicians do not hold political office, but are heads to agencies that control law enforcement assets.
Let us not judge these politicians by their words, but by there actions. Under the law, Christopher Dorner is presumed innocent – no matter how compelling the evidence – until proven guilty in a court of law. This must be weighed with the reality that he is an armed and dangerous suspect fleeing from justice. He apparently has used violence against innocent civilians and a police officer and, as such, represents such a danger to his pursuers that capture may be impossible without further bloodshed.
At least one radio talk show host, a military veteran who has experienced concussive brain trauma, has offered to walk Dorner into a police station. The offer was made on one of the largest and most powerful Southern California radio stations. The talk show host also indicates that he disagrees with what Dorner has done and instructed him in the proper method of committing suicide if that is his choice. Whether this was a publicity stunt or sincere offer to help a hurting fellow soldier is left up to you. Personally, I think the offer was sincere as this man has a wife and young child.
Let us hope that this situation can be resolved without further bloodshed or law enforcement accidents which have resulted in the police shooting at three innocent citizens.
