CHURCH RELIEVES CARDINAL ROGER MAHONY OF ALL ADMINISTRATIVE AND PUBLIC DUTIES -- WHY IS HE NOT BEING PROSECUTED FOR OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE, PERJURY, AIDING AND ABETTING CRIMINAL CHILD ABUSE AND RAPE?

I find it appalling that the Catholic Church’s leadership is getting off without criminal prosecution for obstruction of justice, perjury, and aiding and abetting criminal child abuse and rape. Why the Cardinal is allowed to remain in Los Angeles is beyond me. Perhaps he should be transferred to Rome where he can live out the rest of his pathetic life begging for forgiveness. Considering the lengths to which the Catholic Church’s leadership went to protect themselves, one cannot help but wonder if homosexuality is secretly condoned and institutionalized in the Church. Perhaps I would be satisfied if both men were sent to third-world nations to work among the poorest of the poor as a penance for their evildoing ways.

The letter released on Cardinal Mahony and Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry

Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Archbishop of Los Angeles
Los Angeles January 31, 2013

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

This week we are releasing the files of priests who sexually abused children while they were serving in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

These files document abuses that happened decades ago. But that does not make them less serious.

I find these files to be brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil. There is no excuse, no explaining away what happened to these children. The priests involved had the duty to be their spiritual fathers and they failed.

We need to acknowledge that terrible failure today. We need to pray for everyone who has ever been hurt by members of the Church. And we need to continue to support the long and painful process of healing their wounds and restoring the trust that was broken.

I cannot undo the failings of the past that we find in these pages. Reading these files, reflecting on the wounds that were caused, has been the saddest experience I’ve had since becoming your Archbishop in 2011.

My predecessor, retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, has expressed his sorrow for his failure to fully protect young people entrusted to his care.

Effective immediately, I have informed Cardinal Mahony that he will no longer have any administrative or public duties.

Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry has also publicly apologized for his decisions while serving as Vicar for Clergy. I have accepted his request to be relieved of his responsibility as the Regional Bishop of Santa Barbara.

To every victim of child sexual abuse by a member of our Church: I want to help you in your healing. I am profoundly sorry for these sins against you.

To every Catholic in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, I want you to know: We will continue, as we have for many years now, to immediately report every credible allegation of abuse to law enforcement authorities and to remove those credibly accused from ministry. We will continue to work, every day, to make sure that our children are safe and loved and cared for in our parishes, schools and in every ministry in the Archdiocese.

In the weeks ahead, I will address all of these matters in greater detail. Today is a time for prayer and reflection and deep compassion for the victims of child sexual abuse.
I entrust all of us and our children and families to the tender care and protection of our Blessed Mother Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of the Angels.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Archbishop of Los Angeles

MAINSTREAM MEDIA WHORE: CBS DEMANDS CNET REMOVE CES AWARD BECAUSE OF CBS LAWSUIT (Updated)

UPDATE: “CES Awards DISH’s Hopper with Sling as ‘Best of Show’ – plans to replace CNET!

The Best of CES awards program is produced by CNET under contract with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) ®, the producer of the International CES. CNET editors originally selected the Hopper with Sling as Best of Show before CNET’s corporate parent, CBS Corp. forced them to remove the Hopper from consideration due to ongoing litigation between CBS Corp. and DISH over specific features of the Hopper.

After the Hopper was removed from consideration and a revote by the editors, CNET awarded The Razer Edge as Best of Show.

CBS Corp., along with other broadcasters, is in litigation with DISH over the Hopper’s capability to allow the recording and playback of programming 24-hours later without commercials. CBS’ decision to force CNET to remove the product from consideration for Best of Show and change its product review policy created a media firestorm. CNET will no longer review products manufactured by companies with which CBS Corp. is in active litigation with respect to the legality of the specific product. Last week, CEA joined several leading tech groups in filing an amicus brief in support of DISH Networks in the suit over the Hopper.

We are shocked that the ‘Tiffany’ network which is known for its high journalistic standards would bar all its reporters from favorably describing classes of technology the network does not like,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “We believe that the DISH Hopper DVR is fully covered by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios Inc. The simple fact is making television easier to watch is not against the law. It is simply pro-innovation and pro-consumer.”

CEA also announced that it will soon issue a request for proposal (RFP) to identify a new partner to run the Best of CES awards program. <Source>

Original Blog …

Once upon a time, journalists – even those working for major corporations – maintained a firewall between corporate executives, the advertising department and editorial department. Now, it appears that journalistic ethics are a thing of the past in an Obama era, where mainstream publications and media outlets have lost all credibility and are simply appendages of the corporate executives. Witness the journalistic corruption at NBC/MSNBC when parent corporation General Electric went all out to promote President Obama and his fellow travelers as part of their strategic corporate vision. Perhaps they had no choice as they rely on government for major grants, contracts and help with sales to foreign entitites. But all of the trust in what was said on their network and cable outlets appeared to be little more than propaganda from the Obama administration.

Please note, this is not a slam on the hard-working trade journalists at CNET who need their jobs in these economically freaky times – but simply an example of the whorehouse that mainstream CBS has become.

The problem is that CBS corporate apparently ordered CNET to remove the Dish Hopper with Sling from consideration for the Best of CES [Consumer Electronics Show] awards simply because CBS is suing Dish over alleged copyright violations because the Hopper can skip over revenue-producing commercials. The product in question, a Sling-enabled Hopper DVR, lets users watch live and recorded television anywhere – not just at home. A great feature for those of us who do not normally watch broadcast or cable TV on their schedule, but time-shift to a schedule of our own making.

The idea that a journalistic award for the “best of breed” can be influenced by the parent company’s litigation or dictates corrupts the entire process. Even knowing that an award is capable of being corrupted defeats the entire purpose of an award based on merit.

Best of CES 2013

CNET once again presents the official awards program of CES. The awards recognize the best products at the show, including a Best of Show award and a People's Voice award, as voted by the CNET audience.

Since 2006 CNET has presented the Best of CES Awards given to the top products as well as one coveted Best of Show Award. See the nominated products for this year, and vote for the People's Voice winner starting Wed., Jan. 9, right after finalists are announced.

The Dish Hopper with Sling was removed from consideration due to active litigation involving our parent company CBS Corp. We will no longer be reviewing products manufactured by companies with which we are in litigation with respect to such product. <Source>

If CNET is no longer to honestly and fairly review products or to distort votes by he general public, they should suffer the consequences and be shunned in the tech industry. Corrupt in one area, the probability is that hey will be corrupt in other areas.

Bottom line …

Corporations are always suing one another over deals, patents and perceived slights. This is simply a way of life. But when these feuds spill over into what is purported to be honest reporting, the consumer loses.

It is hoped that the Consumer Electronics Association and its Chairman Randy Fry (of Fry’s Electronics for all you geeks) formally sanctions CNET’s parent CBS for their boorish behavior.

Content creators and distributors have always attempted to disadvantage consumers when any electronic innovation hits the market; all for the purpose of saving their failing business model which demands a strong government-enforced gatekeeper infrastructure. Digital audio recorders, digital video recorders and now content delivery over the Internet must be encumbered with restrictions on usage and privacy violations as individuals and their files are tracked at every use of a Internet connected device.

RACIST ALERT: FOX'S O'REILLY FACTOR SHOWS DENNIS MILLER, COLIN POWELL AND MONKEY IN THE SAME FRAME?

Watching O’Reilly’s program on Fox Cable and was struck by a picture of a monkey in the same frame with Dennis Miller and Colin Powell …

mpm

Can’t wait for the racists to start jumping up and down claiming there is a hidden meaning.

And, no this wasn’t photoshopped! It was part of a tease for the next segment …

O’Reilly: “Later Dennis Miller on my interview with Colin Powell last night and more monkey business by Iran.  We’re coming right back.”

Gun Control: Chicago Mayor Rahm "The Ballerina" Emanuel Goes After Banks That Lend To Gun Makers -- NOT GANGS!

Rahm “the ballerina” Emanuel is afraid of gangs -- can’t prosecute the minorities which make up the democrat base …

Dancing aroung the issue of gangs.

A 15-year-old girl who performed at the president's inauguration is gunned down by gangs less than a mile from Barack Obama's home. What does Chicago's mayor do? He blames banks who lend gun makers money. Hadiya Pendleton, who just days before had performed with her high school band at President Obama's inauguration, was gunned down Tuesday afternoon in Chicago's Kenwood neighborhood, just blocks from the high school she attended.

The park where she was killed is a little less than a mile from President Obama's Kenwood home. In addition to Hadiya, two men were killed and eight other people wounded Tuesday night in Chicago, arguably the most violent city in the country despite having the most restrictive gun laws. Chicago by Sunday had reached 41 homicides, surpassing the January 2012 homicide toll.

With seven homicides, Saturday was the deadliest day of the young year as the Windy City exceeds the deadly toll at Newtown, Conn., without much media fanfare. The carnage included a 34-year-old man whose mother had already lost her three other children to shootings.

Confronted with a rising body count that exceeded 500 in 2012, Chicago Mayor and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, not letting this crisis go to waste, has sent letters to two major financial institutions, TD Bank and Bank of America, which offer lines of credit to gun makers.

He suggested that they stop lending money to the manufacturers and come out for new gun restrictions. Source: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Goes After Banks That Lend To Gun Makers - Investors.com

Bottom line …

The source of the gun-related deaths is not the weapon, but the minority gangs that wield the weapons. Plain cause and effect. Now if Rahm, the hyper-partisan POS would only go after the gangs – the murder rate would drop drastically.

-- steve

P.S. Rahm really is an accomplished ballet dancer. A graduate of the Evanston School of Ballet and was good enough to be offered a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet. (He turned it down to attend Sarah Lawrence -- originally a liberal arts girls school) I wonder if he ever tried to break into Titsworth, the all girl dorm?

Gun Control: Dishonest Chicago Democrats spinning the story about gun control, not gang violence control!!!

Gun violence in Chicago, the democrat-ruled city with strict gun control laws but few gang control laws. After all, you do not want to enforce laws that would fall disproportionately on the minority base of the democrat party.

Once again, we see gun-related violence in a minority neighborhood and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel gets emotional … so where is the massive crackdown against criminal gangs?

Where is President Obama? Jesse Jackson? Al Sharpton? Why are they not marching against gangs?

15-Year-Old Girl Shot And Killed In Kenwood Neighborhood Park

A teenage girl–an honor student who had just performed at President Obama’s inaugural–was gunned down Tuesday afternoon in the Kenwood neighborhood, just blocks from the high school she attended. CBS 2’s Mike Parker reports the victim, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, was taking shelter from the rain with a group of 10 to 12 teenagers under a canopy in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park on the 4500 block of South Oakenwald Avenue around 2:30 p.m., when someone jumped a fence, ran up to them, and opened fire.

Just days before, Hadiya performed with her high school band at President Obama’s inauguration. Mayor Rahm Emanuel called Hadiya’s mother, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, to try to offer a measure of comfort.“She is what is best in our city. A child going to school, who takes a final exam, who had just been to the inaugural,” Emanuel said. “You look at her, you look at how she talked about her future. She took her final exams. She had dreams. And this gang-banger, this punk took that away from Cleopatra. They took it away from Hadiya. And in my view, they took it away from the city of Chicago.”

CBS 2′s Suzanne Le Mignot reports the park where Hadiya was shot is just blocks from King College Prep High School — where she was an honor student, volleyball player, and majorette with the school band. Hadiya, who dreamed of becoming a lawyer, was part of the school’s Crystal Elegance marching band’s majorette team, which performed at President Barack Obama’s second inaugural last week. Hadiya’s father described her as a “shining light.” “She would brighten up a room when she walked in,” Nathaniel Pendleton said. “They took someone that had a real shining light.”

A witness said the teens who were with Hadiya at the time of the shooting scattered and ran out of the park in a panic after the shots were fired. Hadiya and a boy who also was shot collapsed about a block away, in front of one of the upscale condo row houses that line Oakenwald. Hadiya was struck once in the back, and died at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital less than an hour later. The teenage boy who was shot was struck in the leg. He also was being treated at Comer Children’s Hospital.

Police said Hadiya had no gang affiliation and likely wasn’t the intended target. Several of the teens with her at the time, however, were believed to be gang members.

Bottom line …

This does not appear to be a random shooting. Nobody goes to the trouble of jumping a fence when there are more convenient victims nearby.

You stop the gun-violence by stopping gang violence!

Again, it’s crime control, not gun control that is needed. Disarming law-abiding citizens is not the answer. The answer is to go after minority gangs! Regardless of the political consequences to the democrat party and its big-money entitlement support culture!

Global Warming: Select a series of "peer-reviewed" scientific papers and then write a summary with an alarming headline -- this is not science, it is manipulation of science for political purposes!

What if the headline read: “Midwest to experience profound political corruption, higher taxes, lower standard of living and accelerated waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer funds?” All of which are as true as the fact that global climate change will mean changes in the Midwest in coming decades.

  • Fact: All of the adverse events predicted for the future are well within the natural variability of climate. With significant weather events being traced to cyclic events such as the El Niño/La Niña–Southern Oscillation.
  • Fact: All of the adverse events predicted for the future come from models which do not agree with observational data or are severely flawed in their assumptions, programming, and highly-massaged input data.
  • Fact:: All of the cherry-picked scientific papers appear to support a pre-selected “consensus” that favors draconian public policies which have a beneficial effect on large government bureaucracies while disadvantaging ordinary citizens. Science is not performed by consensus. And the science of global climate change is highly speculative with an unproven hypothesis about anthropogenic effects on climate.
  • Fact: All of the time-frames to detect changes in global climate as so large as to prevent accountability for political actions that turn out to be fraudulent.
  • Fact: Man is unable, at the present time, to affect the global weather pattern and is unable to significantly influence the Sun, the Earth’s rotational dynamics, the planet’s plate tectonics or vulcanology, the deep ocean currents or the most significant greenhouse gas, water vapor.
  • Fact: the Earth has been colder, hotter, with more atmospheric carbon dioxide, and less carbon dioxide prior to the industrial revolution – proving that significant climate change is natural, cyclical and operates regardless of man’s puny contribution. Many studies do not show the benefits of a warmer climate and additional atmospheric carbon dioxide.
  • Fact: significant weather events, measured by property damage or loss of life can be attributed to man’s poor zoning codes (building in known climate-unfriendly areas), poor building codes (non-disaster resistant housing), and increasing population density and the rising cost of replacement building materials.
  • Fact: carbon dioxide is not the culprit as it does not cause global warming and the phenomena can be explained by simple physics. Remember: carbon dioxide increases lag temperature increases by 600-1000 years.
  • And, does anyone acknowledge that a warming Earth is a natural thing as we emerge from the Little Ice Age?

Conclusion: most of these reports are “mental manure” designed to panic an uneducated population into accepting socialist political propaganda based on nothing more than the whim of corrupt politicians who are purchasing their science as institutions, scientists and projects are funded by a dishonest politicians seeking control over our nation, its energy use, its economy and its people.

Mental Manure …

Climate Change to Profoundly Affect the Midwest in Coming Decades

In the coming decades, climate change will lead to more frequent and more intense Midwest heat waves while degrading air and water quality and threatening public health. Intense rainstorms and floods will become more common, and existing risks to the Great Lakes will be exacerbated.

Those are some of the conclusions contained in the Midwest chapter of a draft report released last week by the federal government that assesses the key impacts of climate change on every region in the country and analyzes its likely effects on human health, water, energy, transportation, agriculture, forests, ecosystems and biodiversity.

The draft National Climate Assessment report is available at http://ncadac.globalchange.gov. A summary of associated technical input papers is available at www.glisa.umich.edu. Public comment on the draft report will be accepted through April 12. Read more at: Climate Change to Profoundly Affect the Midwest in Coming Decades

 Bottom line …

Ask yourself, how many of the participating scientists are actually administrators with scientific credentials?

Ask yourself, how many of the participating scientists are actually outspoken climate activists?

Ask yourself, how many of the participating scientists have an association with a known advocacy group that has socialist connections and funding?

Ask yourself, how many of the participating scientists are associated with the United Nation’s IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) which has been the source of misleading and erroneous data?

Ask yourself, how many of the participating scientists have been implicated in the climate-gate e-mail scandal showing gross manipulation of modeling data, cherry-picked timeframes, and subversion of the peer-review process to prevent counter-arguments from appearing in print.

But most of all, ask yourself how any of this information can be validated and verified by science so you do not have to take the word of corrupt politicians for results which will not be apparent for hundreds of years?

Mental manure and bullpucky!

-- steve

Read through some of these “input” papers …

Consider for yourself the tone of the papers submitted, the localized data being mapped to a larger geographical area, – and the disclaimers, error projections and waffle words like “appears,” “suggests,” “possible,” etc. This is the type of billion-dollar research that is prevalent in climate science … much of it abstracted and used to produce a false socialist political scenario: government must be enlarged and have more control in order to manage the scarcity of natural resources for the upcoming generations. It is just another form of population control that is the basis for socialism and communism.

Technical inputs for the 2013 National Climate Assessment were due March 1, 2012. Please note that these reports were submitted independently to the National Climate Assessment for consideration and have not been reviewed by the National Climate Assessment Development and Advisory Committee. Links to agency-sponsored reports will be posted here as they are made available.

SENATE CONFIRMS JOHN KERRY, ELITIST ANTI-AMERICA SOCIALIST AS SECRETARY OF STATE AND OBAMA’S ERRAND BOY!

It is with some measure of sadness that I see that the Senate has confirmed John Kerry with a vote of 94-3 to replace Hillary Clinton. The fact that Republicans were as eager to praise John Kerry makes me fear for the future of the GOP – the “go along, to get along” party of institutionalized politics, profits and pandering.

From the man accused of harboring an illegal alien in his office and is being investigated as a potential child molester …

"Sen. Kerry will need no introduction to the world's political and military leaders and will begin Day One fully conversant not only with the intricacies of U.S. foreign policy, but able to act on a multitude of international stages," said Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who will succeed Kerry as committee chairman. Voting “NO” Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and John Cornyn and Ted Cruz of Texas. Absent: Patty Murray (D-WA) John Hoeven (R-ND) <Source>

beacon_flashing Sen. Robert Menendez employed as an unpaid intern in his Senate office an illegal immigrant who was a registered sex offender, now under arrest by immigration authorities, The Associated Press has learned. The Homeland Security Department instructed federal agents not to arrest him until after Election Day, a U.S. official involved in the case told the AP. <Source>

beacon_flashing[5] Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) is being investigated by the FBI for allegedly hiring underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. <Source>

Perfect – a “too big to fail” politician takes Kerry’s place on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Bottom line …

It appears that you can no longer trust the democrats or the republicans to look out for America’s best interests. How this anti-America elitist can become the Secretary of State – and be replaced by a corrupt New Jersey politician is beyond me.

Immigration Reform: Corrupt Politicians Pushing Amnesty for Illegal Aliens without SAFEGUARDS!

Before any politician speaks about granting any form of comprehensive immigration reform, they need to deal with the following issues:

1.  A corrupt Department of Justice that illegally and unconstitutionally refuses to uphold the existing laws of the land when it comes to illegal aliens.

2.  A corrupt Department of State that illegally and unconstitutionally refuses to uphold the existing laws of the land when it comes to illegal aliens.

3.  Agencies who refuse to complete a visa tracking system so that BOTH incoming and outgoing visitors are tracked and a mechanism to place those who overstay their visas on a law enforcement watchlist.

4. Agencies who refuse to reform our Social Security numbering system which has been massively and thoroughly corrupted by stolen, forged or bogus identification numbers.

5. Complete a state system to identify illegal alien driver’s licenses which cannot be used for official uses other than driving.

6. Outlaw illegal alien sanctuary activities and cut all funds flow to any state or municipality that maintains policies that are advantageous to illegal aliens.

7. Develop a tamper-proof non-citizen identity card and give all illegal aliens 180 days to register with the Department of State.

8. Place a 180-day moratorium on deportations except for repeat offenders and criminals to allow people to register.

9. Increase penalties for those crossing the border without a pre-approved work-permit or an official registration card.

10.  Deport any unregistered illegal alien after a specified date. (with suitable exceptions)

11.  Cut off all social services (with the exception of emergency medical assistance) for those without an official registration card.

12.  Tax Mexican’s funds transfers to pay for emergency medical care and social services.

13. CHILDREN WILL ASSUME THE CITIZENSHIP OF THEIR PARENTS!

And the list goes on …

This should not be done in a 2000+ page bill with loopholes, exceptions and special amendments. Each portion shall be a stand-alone bill with no more than five pages of plain English text. It should repeal every contrary provision of every previous law. No power shall be granted to the Secretary of any Agency to amend, interpret or change the law without Congressional approval. All executive orders shall be approved by Congress within 180 days and submitted to the Supreme Court for a check on basic constitutional compliance.

And the list goes on …

Gun control: Liberal Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca won't tell you the truth … but Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clark tells the truth

Listen as Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clark tells the truth about the need for you to protect yourself …

Highlights …

“I need you in the game.”

“With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option.”

“You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back.”

“Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you could defend yourself until we get there”

“You have a duty to protect yourself and your family.”

“We’re partners now. Can I count on you?”

Contrast that with Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, a liberal hypocrite of the first order  …

Outspokenly anti-gun where ordinary citizens are concerned, he recently established and then was forced to discontinue a "celebrity reserve" program, offered exclusively to those he deemed "prominent," and requiring significantly different qualifications than the reserve program ordinary citizens are eligible to participate in. Dangling the promise of a badge and a gun to such notable figures as Jay Leno and Steven Segal, who, to their credit, turned down the offer, Baca had nonetheless sworn in twenty lesser civic luminaries. And in doing so, precipitated a fiasco. <Source>

Bottom line …

America’s Sheriffs – directly appointed by the people and responsible to the people are the last line of defense against evildoers. Some are raging liberals, like Baca, who speaks out of both sides of his mouth – advocating gun control, engaging in Muslim outreach, taking gifts as a perk of office, all while allegedly ignoring the abuse of prisoners on his watch. And, others are courageous patriots, willing to stand up and speak “truth to power”  like Sherriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa, County, Arizona.

But, the fact remains: law enforcement has a general duty to protect the incumbent government and the general peace and order – not to protect or defend any particular individual when help is urgently required. It’s up to you as to how you want to live your life. A sniveling liberal begging for mercy, or a citizen defending their life and the lives of their loved ones.

Climate Change, Correlation, Causation and gullible people

I have a natural skepticism of media releases attempting to use climate science as a rationale for public policies because these public policies have less to do with improving the health and welfare of the general public and everything to do with gaining and maintaining political power …

Let us remember that there is a difference between correlation (interrelated co-factors, both positive and negative) and causation (one of more co-factors causing an observed event); and the fact that correlation is not always causation. That is, because drug users all drink water, that water drinkers will become drug users. We should also remember that science is not performed by consensus and that the output of computer models is not scientific fact.

Therefore, I looked with great skepticism and disdain on a media release from Arizona State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

flu

The American public can expect to add earlier and more severe flu seasons to the fallout from climate change, according to a research study published online Jan. 28 in PLOS Currents: Influenza

“It appears that fewer people contract influenza during warm winters, and this causes a major portion of the population to remain vulnerable into the next season, causing an early and strong emergence,” says Towers. “And when a flu season begins exceptionally early, much of the population has not had a chance to get vaccinated, potentially making that flu season even worse.”

The current flu season, which is still in high gear in parts of the nation, began early and fiercely. It followed a relatively light 2011-2012 season, which saw the lowest peak of flu since tracking efforts went into effect, and coincided with the fourth warmest winter on record. According to previous studies, flu transmission decreases in warm or humid conditions.

If global warming continues, warm winters will become more common, and the impact of flu will likely be more heavily felt, say the study’s authors. <Source>

(2013) Climate change and influenza: the likelihood of early and severe influenza seasons following warmer than average winters

Abstract

The 2012-13 influenza season had an unusually early and severe start in the US, succeeding the record mild 2011-12 influenza season, which occurred during the fourth warmest winter on record. Our analysis of climate and past US influenza epidemic seasons between 1997-98 to present indicates that warm winters tend to be followed by severe epidemics with early onset, and that these patterns are seen for both influenza A and B.

We posit that fewer people are infected with influenza during warm winters, thereby leaving an unnaturally large fraction of susceptible individuals in the population going into the next season, which can lead to early and severe epidemics.

In the event of continued global warming, warm winters such as that of 2011-12 are expected to occur more frequently. Our results thus suggest that expedited manufacture and distribution of influenza vaccines after mild winters has the potential to mitigate the severity of future influenza epidemics.

While it is nice to know that “warm winters tend to be followed by severe flu epidemics, I would be more impressed if the authors actually conducted research to indicate why this was true. Such a study was conducted in 2010 and is presented below.

(2010) Absolute Humidity and the Seasonal Onset of Influenza in the Continental United States

Abstract

Much of the observed wintertime increase of mortality in temperate regions is attributed to seasonal influenza. A recent reanalysis of laboratory experiments indicates that absolute humidity strongly modulates the airborne survival and transmission of the influenza virus. Here, we extend these findings to the human population level, showing that the onset of increased wintertime influenza-related mortality in the United States is associated with anomalously low absolute humidity levels during the prior weeks. We then use an epidemiological model, in which observed absolute humidity conditions temper influenza transmission rates, to successfully simulate the seasonal cycle of observed influenza-related mortality. The model results indicate that direct modulation of influenza transmissibility by absolute humidity alone is sufficient to produce this observed seasonality. These findings provide epidemiological support for the hypothesis that absolute humidity drives seasonal variations of influenza transmission in temperate regions.

Author’s Summary

The origin of seasonality in influenza transmission is both of palpable public health importance and basic scientific interest.

Here, we present statistical analyses and a mathematical model of epidemic influenza transmission that provide strong epidemiological evidence for the hypothesis that absolute humidity (AH) drives seasonal variations of influenza transmission in temperate regions.

We show that the onset of individual wintertime influenza epidemics is associated with anomalously low AH conditions throughout the United States.

In addition, we use AH to modulate the basic reproductive number of influenza within a mathematical model of influenza transmission and compare these simulations with observed excess pneumonia and influenza mortality.

These simulations capture key details of the observed seasonal cycle of influenza throughout the US. The results indicate that AH affects both the seasonality of influenza incidence and the timing of individual wintertime influenza outbreaks in temperate regions.

The association of anomalously low AH conditions with the onset of wintertime influenza outbreaks suggests that skillful, short-term probabilistic forecasts of epidemic influenza could be developed.

This is the same type of study and modeling, but you will notice that there is no hype, and no bafflegab about “global warming.”

Bottom line …

There are many other factors that may have a significant effect on influenza-related mortality and should be considered in conjunction with the weather.

  • Since the severity of a flu season is measured by recorded mortalities, one might posit that the most vulnerable population, the elderly, will produce rising numbers independent of weather as the nation naturally ages. It appears that the elderly may also have the least benefit from seasonal flu vaccine formulations due to a variety of comorbidity conditions and other factors.
  • There is a natural error factor as deaths are attributed to influenza-like symptomology and not a verified flu strain.
  • That many people may become more vulnerable to the flu in the winter due to the stress of cold weather on their immune systems and a potential Vitamin D deficiency due to reduced sunlight that can also affect the body’s immune system and ability to ward off disease.
  • And that the CDC’s “best guess” as to the composition of the upcoming flu strains and the six-month lead time for mass vaccine production may also significantly alter outcomes.

Therefore, experimental work should be controlled for the above significant variables before high-probability correlations can be stated with some degree of certitude.

It should also be noted that I continue to be annoyed by those who continue to suggest that we should immediately implement draconian public policies based on incomplete and unsettled science. There is no planetary emergency and that the natural timescale of climate variability gives us a very, very long lead time when it comes to researching and understanding climate change. Probably best said as: if we stopped all energy and carbon production today, we would not be able to measure the results (if ever against the natural variability of climate change) for at least 600 to 1,000 years depending on the particular datasets used.
