Why the progressives must be purged from government in 2012 ...

I have been thinking more and more about the political craziness in Wisconsin, California, Arizona and elsewhere in the United States. And my conclusions are simple and rather startling.

The progressives are at the root of most of the social and economic chaos in the United States. Even while pointing a finger at the opposition, it takes very little effort to see that the progressives are attempting to use our own laws against us, miring us in an ever-expanding world of artificial complexity that criminalizes or prohibits many of our day-to-day activities.

The reason for this continuing antagonism against business is relatively simple. It is based on the premise that the bounty of the Earth, like the amount of money contained within the financial system is limited and that we have already stretched the system as far as possible – creating an ecological deficit by consuming more of the planet’s resources than can be replenished and creating a continually expanding deficit that can never be repaid.

That these deficits have risen to such a level as to require intervention of a strongly motivated and empowered ruling elite to set us on the course of repairing the damage to the planet and our financial system.

That the government and the media must create a sense of urgency that will allow the ruling elite to assume power over us without provoking a civil insurrection by people who believe that individualism trumps the type of collectivism that is found in European-style socialism.

And the way progressives plan to achieve this power is twofold: one, to create an entitlement class whose growing numbers will allow for the ruling class to cite “majority rule” when taking action; and two, to silence any form of dissent by limiting access to free speech or criminalizing such speech as being “subversive.”

Based on a false premise …

When examined carefully, the entire premise behind the progressive’s plan is not just flawed, it is patently false.

Nature’s biodiversity and ability for adaptation is ill-understood by even those who proclaim to know the subject matter best. Most experts function only in narrow fields of expertise and combining their findings into a single hypothesis does not make the hypothesis correct. Especially if the findings exist only in computer models which confuse correlation and appearance with causation. Because of the vastness of the planet, there is little or no probability that we have come anywhere near to exhausting our natural resources or that science and technology cannot assist us in creating alternatives.

Consider, at this point in time and with all the learned experts, that we do not know how oil is actually made. Compressed products of decaying plants and animals is only a hypothesis and nobody knows how nature performs the trick of cross-linking molecules into petroleum products. And even if our natural oil supply was finite and nearing exhaustion, one merely needs to consider the boundless nature of radioactivity and the ability to generate unlimited energy using nuclear sources.

Ask yourself why both parties demand that the United States become energy independent – and have made this demand for decades – yet nothing is done?

And when it comes to financial matters, one must look at what the progressives, mainly democrats, in the government have done to build their entitlement coalition around the idea of collectivism and social justice for all.

Ask yourself, why the politicians use scare resources to support people who do not legally belong in this country?

Or why these very same politicians refuse to cap the salary and benefits of public employees which far exceed the salaries and benefits of private sector employees?

Or why corporate criminals are not being punished – lest they reveal who they have paid off?

These politicians have become the modern Janus, the two-faced god of beginnings and transitions; ever looking at the past (socialism, communism) and the future (a perfect planet for perfect people). Simultaneously embracing personal corruption for their self-interest and the promotion of those special interests which support their activities. Forcing companies to continually raise prices to support their ecological ideas and weakening sound underwriting procedures to allow money to flow to their core constituency: the poor, the minorities, and the collectivist unions – whom they support in return for campaign funds, media support and voter drives.

The unions as an object lesson …

We are not speaking of the private sector unions which have fostered great gains in child labor laws, health and safety provisions and sit across from management as a relatively honest broker representing labor.

We are speaking of public employee unions which bear little or no resemblance to private sector unions. They are not honest brokers for their members; many of whom do not agree with nor do they support the union’s progressive philosophy. They are not honest brokers for the people as their influence is used to elect public officials to do their bidding – inspiring such fear in duly elected officials that they ignore their primary responsibilities to “We the People” in order to provide the unions with growing power and financial support. It is the people who do not have a seat at the table. In other words, we are seeing a situation of “taxation without representation.”

Progressivism on both sides of the aisle …

I cannot condemn progressive democrats without mentioning progressive republicans. Specifically aisle hoppers like John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe and others. Some of which claim to have conservative roots while continuing to further the goal of the progressives.

Even the Tea Party Movement is being infiltrated …

Even when or current financial and social situation calls for drastic action, in the form of a Tea Party Movement, we see traditional politicians attempting to subvert the movement for their own political gain.

Consider progressive Orrin Hatch (R-UT) pandering to the Tea Party Movement to keep his privileged and pampered position in the United States Senate. In spite of having done more damage to the digital industry with his mandatory restrictions on both electronic devices and recordable media. He is one of the people behind the embedding of your identification in each and every file you create with your electronic devices. He is the man behind the increasing stringency of the copyright act which was originally a method to insure the public’s right to use materials created by authors and artists in return for a period of exclusive exploitation. Not a perpetual means to lock-up content for the content distributors.

Consider progressive Dick Armey, the former Congressional Representative from Texas (1985–2003) and who served as the House Majority from 1995 to 2003). Here is the man who served as the Chairman of the House Select Committee on Homeland Security and was the primary sponsor of the legislation that created the abominable and out-of-control Department of Homeland Security. How many people know that Dick Armey is one of the controlling interests behind “Freedom Works” which ostensibly has 700,000 members and professional paid staff in 10 states – and is positioned as “a leading voice of the Tea Party movement.”

Bottom line …

Progressives are trying to create a world of artificial scarcity and then using the management of scarcity to build unstoppable political power. Instead of improving the business and social climate (pun intended) of the United States, they are seeking to destroy our institutions and infrastructure. By dumbing down our educational standards, by allocating scare resources meant for our citizens to illegal aliens and by using our tax dollars to fund social programs rather than repair or replace our crumbling infrastructure.

If it seems like they are trying to negatively impact our national economy and our American way of life – it is because they are trying to turn us towards European-style socialism; with their stagnant economies, overwhelming numbers of unproductive and unionized government bureaucrats, and an entitlement culture which kills the middle class in favor of oligarchs and the union workers.

In the final analysis they are trying to lower our standard of living toward that of a third-world nation, to impose population control in the form of contraception, abortion and homosexuality, to force us to commit economic suicide by following their social justice prescriptions.

Wake up people. My best friend Al is convinced we are doomed. That we are at the tipping point – and once we cross over, there will be little chance for survival of the American Way. As much as I tell him he is wrong, I am seeing the other side win.

Consider that the public employee unions in Wisconsin are massing to recall those legislators who capped the power of the union and returned citizens to the bargaining table. Exactly what they promised in the last election and now they are paying the price for removing the public employee gravy train.

If we cannot rally enough support in 2012 to overcome the progressives, we might be doomed. If we continue to support progressives like Mitt Romney – the father of Romneycare which served as the template of Obamacare – my buddy Al might just win this argument.

Nuclear Politics: Why is Steven Chu not in Japan?

To hear the United States Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, say:

“The events unfolding in the Japan incidents actually appear to be more serious than Three Mile Island. To what extent we really don’t know. And so as they are unfolding very rapidly on and hour-by-hour, day-by-day basis and there are conflicting reports. We really don’t know in detail what’s happening.”

is deeply disturbing.

Chu is not just another political hack appointee. In spite of his progressive leanings and predilection for global warming, he is a Nobel Prize winner and a former professor of Physics. He was the Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He certainly knows more about the subject matter under discussion than he did about deepwater oil disasters.

So to think this man would not hop a military transport along with guys from the National Lab, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and some of the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) people and verify the situation for himself, the President of the United States and the people living on the West Coast is problematical.

Because that posits the question: has the United States military detected a real problem and revealing that problem to the American people would reveal methods and sources to our enemies? Perhaps causing havoc in the Western states.

I hope that our government is playing straight on nuclear matters, because it appears that the Japanese are not.

Global Warming: Dishonesty, Stupidity, Corruption -- the perfect Tsunami wave

Perhaps living by the credo that progressives should never let a good crisis go to waste, we are starting to see charlatans come out of the woodwork to proclaim that there is a link between the tragedy now unfolding in Japan and global warming.

As if public policy could stop the Earth’s tectonic plates from shifting and causing catastrophic earthquakes in the process. And yes, it is that simple and that corrupt.

Linking Japan to global warming …

“On behalf of the EESC, I should like to express my sympathy with all the families of the victims in Japan. We stand shoulder to shoulder with all the people now struggling with the unfolding devastating effects of the earthquake in the Pacific region.”

“The human and material damage is immense, and the EESC members’ thoughts are with the Japanese people and government.”

“We express our support to our partners in those ACP countries potentially affected by this natural disaster.”

This is a time for solidarity, and we urge the EU and other international organisations to provide immediate and appropriate assistance, if needed, to help governments and civil society organisations in the region deal with this tragedy. We also call on humanitarian civil society organisations to react quickly to provide support to Japan and all the other affected countries.”

The earthquake and tsunami will clearly have a severe impact on the economic and social activities of the region. Some islands affected by climate change have been hit. Has not the time come to demonstrate on solidarity – not least solidarity in combating and adapting to climate change and global warming? Mother Nature has again given us a sign that that is what we need to do.

The sign that Mother Nature has given us is a “close up and personal” look at the awesome power of nature and the impotence of man when it comes to controlling global physical events.

Any scientist, any politician or any person who believes that public policy could have stopped the Earth from relieving the tremendous strain of the Earth’s crust floating on the molten core at the Earth’s center is certifiably insane or a criminal waiting to pick your pocket. I vote for criminal as these politicians try to impose their political agenda on the people for their own personal, political and profitable self-interests.

For those of you who want a close-up look at European-style socialism, here it is …

About the organization …

“Committed to European integration, the EESC contributes to strengthening the democratic legitimacy and effectiveness of the European Union by enabling civil society organisations from the Member States to express their views at European level. This Committee fulfills three key missions:

  • helping to ensure that European policies and legislation tie in better with economic, social and civic circumstances on the ground, by assisting the European Parliament, Council and European Commission, making use of EESC members' experience and representativeness, dialogue and efforts to secure consensus serving the general interest;
  • promoting the development of a more participatory European Union which is more in touch with popular opinion, by acting as an institutional forum representing, informing, expressing the views of and securing dialogue with organised civil society;
  • promoting the values on which European integration is founded and advancing, in Europe and across the world, the cause of democracy and participatory democracy, as well as the role of civil society organisations.”

About the man …

“An activist since his student years and now a prosperous farmer, Staffan Nilsson is a driving force for dialogue and inclusive development. Openness and cooperation are the hallmarks of this term.”

“Nilsson is a veteran leader in the EESC (European Economic and Social Committee). Before becoming President of the EESC, he was President of Group III (Various Interests) for six years, and Vice-president for another six. Since 1995, when he became a member of the EESC and Group III, he has actively contributed his expertise to the work of the EESC, mainly in the fields of agriculture, sustainable development and international cooperation.”

“He has been rapporteur for opinions on the Soil Protection Framework Directive, the Communication on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides, agriculture and food safety in the context of the Euromed partnership, and the Action plan for Environmental Technology – to mention but a few. Nilsson has been an active member of the EESC Joint Consultative Committees (JCCs) established with accession countries in the past, and he currently plays a key role in the EU-Turkey JCC and the Euromed Committee.”

As if you can circumvent nature or dominate political discussion by baffling the people with talk, talk, talk, report, report, report, talk, talk, talk – all the while picking their pockets and forming a ruling elite to tell the collective how they must behave.

Bottom line …

Disgusting as it is, many people fall for this line of bafflegab when confronted with so-called “peer reviewed” reports and studies without ever once asking about the activist status and proclivities of those doing the reporting.

The fact that some believe that changing public policy, increasing taxes, increasing governmental bureaucracy, and reducing personal freedoms can tame nature is to point out that country comedian Jeff Foxworthy is 100% right: There are stupid people and they walk among us!”

Please don’t become one of them – call “Bullshit” when you see it!

Can you believe this?

Certain progressives are urging people to avoid donating money for Japanese relief efforts because Japan is a rich industrialized nation and there are those impoverished third world nations that need the money more.

Perhaps they want the money to go to the corrupt socialist dictators or the United Nations?

California: Redevelopment Agencies Plan to screw Governor and California Citizens …

On March 10th, I was disgusted with the special interest political and private self-dealing at the expense of the taxpayer in a blog piece titled “California's Organized Political Crime.” Now the situation has taken a turn for the worse as the local politicians and their developer friends are continuing to act in their best interests – continuing to screw the public by taking on hundreds of millions in debt that must be paid by the taxpayers. Doing this at the very same time our governor, the progressive Jerry Brown, is asking Californian’s to allow a $50 BILLION dollar tax increase to be placed on the ballot.

The Sacramento Bee is reporting …

“Redevelopment agencies take on huge debt to shield tax dollars from state”

“Local redevelopment agencies have pushed through nearly $690 million in bonds sales during the first two months of this year -- that's more than half of the $1.2 billion in debt those agencies took on in all of 2010, according to figures the state treasurer's office compiled.”

“Furthermore, given the shaky market, local governments are borrowing money at high rates -- increasing the amount of property tax revenue that will go to lenders, said Tom Dresslar, a treasury department spokesman.”

The rush to take on debt comes as Gov. Jerry Brown is proposing to eliminate redevelopment agencies in an effort to help balance the budget. The finance department estimates such a cut would close $1.7 billion of the state's $26.6 billion deficit.”

Bottom Line …

At a time when California is in a financial crisis – exacerbated by the democrat-led legislature’s wild out-of-control spending on their special interests and social programs:

(1) The governor goes after local funds dominated by local politicians and their special interest friends (mostly unions and developers) to transfer money to the union-dominated and controlled schools) and

(2) The local politicians fire back by increasing the debt load to dry up any funding that the governor may want to use for the schools and

(3) Placing the additional fiscal burden squarely on the taxpayer’s shoulders and

(4) At a time when the governor is requesting that an additional $50 billion dollar tax increase is approved by the public so the legislature can keep their political influence by special interest spending on the public employee unions and the private special interests who fund their campaigns and

(5) While the unions are preparing a $60 million dollar media blitz featuring police, firefighters, nurses, and teachers (but never cubicle workers that make up the bulk of the bureaucracy) telling sad stories about the impact of cuts on their lives.

Screw this! Why am I being asked to deprive myself and my family of the fruits of my hard work to fund a class of public employees and their bought-and-paid-for politicians so they can keep the circle of corruption intact? Where salaries, benefits and special interest contracts are negotiated by politicians who no longer represent “We the People” but those who fund their campaigns, provide media support and voter drives?

When are the sheeple going to realize that the damn democrats, for all their bullpucky about “class” differences – are creating a privileged class of public employee so they may stay in power.

I say throw the bastards out of office, re-compute the pensions (on those receiving more than $100,000/year) as if there were no special interests involved and start going after the corrupt politicians who are allowed to resign before they are investigated.

Enough is enough.

Global Warming: Some Catholics notice the progressive folly of connecting Lent and global warming ...

On March 9th, 2011 I wrote a blog piece on “Religion: When the worship of carbon transcends reality ...” pretty much because I was offended that religion and the practice of observing Lent was being subverted by progressives within the Catholic faith to serve the secular masters that would have us believe that we should cede our freedoms to the ruling elite – even full well knowing that these progressives were about population control (abortion, contraception, homosexuality) to preserve their concept of a pristine planet. The ruling elite who believe that they are necessary to manage “population units” lest “the population” outstrips the planet’s ability to provide sustenance.

I am gladdened by the posting of this YouTube video which points out much of the same points that I had made in my original blog post.

I believe it is well worth watching …

Japanese Radiation Release: Can you believe their "face-saving" government or your own government?

UPDATE: 03-16-11 HIDING THE TRUTH OR HIDING FROM THE TRUTH?

"The Japanese government's radiation report for the country's 47 prefectures Wednesday had a notable omission: Fukushima, ground zero in Japan's nuclear crisis. Measurements from Ibaraki, just south of Fukushima, were also blanked out."

"Radiation experts in the USA say that the lack of information about radioactivity released from the smoldering reactors makes it impossible to gauge the current danger, project how bad a potential meltdown might be or calculate how much fallout might reach the USA." <Source>

If the United States is not able to detect and measure such a gross emitter of radiation, they are either incompetent (which I doubt) or are failing to tell us what they really know about the situation in Japan. (which is plausible) -- steve
UPDATE: 03-15-11 UNITED STATES SURGEON GENERAL ADVOCATES PREVENTATIVE IODIDE TABLETS AS A PRECAUTION FOR THE WEST COAST

She said it was right to be prepared.”
California Official Disagrees …
“On the other side of the issue is Kelly Huston of the California Emergency Management Agency. Huston said state officials, along with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the California Energy Commission, were monitoring the situation and said people don't need to buy the pills.”

Original blog entry …
Being a skeptic, I often wonder whether or not to believe my government when they make public announcements regarding serious subjects regarding scientific matters.
Why? They are attempting to manipulate the poorly understood science of global climate phenomenology to sell their public policy prescriptions which would see a larger government bureaucracy, higher taxes, wealth re-distribution and the loss of our personal freedoms.
Why? Because the Japanese designed a weapon for use in World War II that was no more sophisticated than 1944-era balloons launched from the Northeast coast of Japan (the scene of the reactor problems) with incendiary devices – designed to start forest fires in California. The bad news: the first one was found in San Pedro, California two-days later on November 5, 1944. Radiated particulate matter carried aloft on high-level winds is definitely a danger. <Source>
Why? Because the way that Sweden found out about Chernobyl is because they detected higher than normal levels of radioactivity on nuclear worker’s clothing which triggered alarms. <Source>
So what does this really mean?

NRC SEES NO RADIATION AT HARMFUL LEVELS REACHING U.S. FROM DAMAGED JAPANESE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS
California is aware of the problem ...
"California 'closely monitoring' Japan nuclear leak"
"At present there is no danger to California."
"However we are monitoring the situation closely in conjunction with our federal partners," Michael Sicilia, spokesman for California Department of Public Health, told AFP.
"California does have radioactivity monitoring systems in place for air, water and the food supply and can enhance that monitoring if a danger exists," he added."
"He was speaking as Japanese authorities moved to calm fears of a meltdown and said a huge explosion Saturday had not ruptured the container surrounding the reactor, although there had already been some radiation leakage prior to the explosion."
"Experts have suggested that, if there were a reactor meltdown or major leak at Fukushima, the radioactive cloud would likely be blown out east across the Pacific, towards the US West Coast."
"'The wind direction for the time being seems to point the (nuclear) pollution towards the Pacific,' said Andre-Claude Lacoste of the French Nuclear Safety Authority, briefing journalists in Paris on the Japanese crisis."
And can you believe anything the United Nations says ...
Given the track record of the United Nations is exploiting crises for media attention, fundraising and promoting their self-interests -- especially with medical emergencies and global warming -- can they be trusted on any matter, let alone a scientific one?

WARNING: BEFORE YOU USE THOSE REMOTE BACKUP SERVICES ...

It’s our contract and it protects us …

As with most vendor’s unilateral contracts, you have few rights and most of the terms and conditions are designed to protect and promote the vendor’s products and services while limiting their liability to the amount of money that you have spent with the vendor for their software and/or services.

A crapshoot with no guarantees, protections or remedies …

Essentially, you are engaging in a crapshoot whether or not your files will be available if and when you need them. The vendor assumes no responsibility for the deletion of data, loss of data or the failure to store data.

What they don’t fully explain …

Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, the availability of your computer, the size of your disk, the amount of data to be backed up and other factors, it may take days or weeks to get a full backup. Because you may change files more frequently than the system’s ability to transmit the files to the remote site, you files may not be backed up and available when you need them.

Since much of the information on your computer is related to the operating system and application programs, backing up these files is often useless because at least the operating system must be re-installed in the case of a hardware failure and then any restore process is likely to take longer than needed – possibly overwriting operating system and application file that are configured for the newer hardware.

Smart backups only backup up customization settings files and data files produced by application programs or downloaded from other sources. If you are not prepared to manage the data you are backing up, the experience may be less than optimal.

Yes, the data may be encrypted, but it is not your encryption key that is used and the vendor’s terms of service does not protect your rights …

There is no guarantee that your encrypted files will not be browsed by the vendor’s employees or by the authorities in the United States or other countries as they snoop or search for prohibited information.

According to the vendor, they will not decrypt your files unless the vendor reasonably believes that it must do so to troubleshoot problems with the Service, the vendor reasonably believes it must do so in order to comply with any law, subpoena, warrant, order, or regulation or to verify the user is complying with the vendor’s terms of service.

You do not have any control over the vendor’s decryption of your files to detect what they believe is an “unstated” problem and you have no rights to prevent such an inspection. Likewise, you may not be notified of an administrative summons on a contemporaneous basis which would allow you to challenge the legality of such a summons. In fact, if this occurs in a foreign country, you have no rights at all.

How could they know that?

The vendor might also provide access to your data to government authorities if the vendor suspects or believes that the data contain child pornography or other prohibited data or that the data are being used for illegal purposes.

If the data is truly encrypted, one must wonder how they would come to a conclusion that a backup contained pornography or illegal data without pre-scanning the unencrypted data or acting upon someone’s tip or suggestion. Again you have little or no rights should someone simply say that you may have contraband on your computer. And it is unlikely that the vendor will notify you of its actions. In all likelihood, a vendor would use a commercial product to scan for incoming pornography or for suspicious file extensions that indicated P2P (Peer-t0-Peer) file sharing.

You have no rights should your data be stored in a foreign country which could conceivably demand that your data be scanned for subversive materials …

You acknowledge that vendor and its third party service providers and affiliates may use servers and other equipment to provide the Software or Service that are located in the United States or in other countries where litigants, law enforcement, courts, and other agencies of the government may have the right to access data stored within their jurisdictions upon terms and conditions provided by local law, and that as a result, they may gain access to your backup data as provided by applicable local law.

Yes, your data may be encrypted … but not if you access it from a computer different from the one that was backed up …

“The Software or Service may permit you to decrypt and download backup data from any Internet enabled computer.”

“You understand that by electing to access your files from a computer other than the one you used to create the backup data, that your backup data will be decrypted by Acronis in its data center and sent to you in a decrypted format via public infrastructure. You acknowledge that this may cause the contents of these files to become accessible to individuals other than you and that you accept this risk.”

You may be responsible for costs that were not authorized by you …

You agree to reimburse the vendor for any costs or fees related to its enforcement of this Agreement, including without limitation the expert fees and attorney fees regularly charged by the experts and legal counsel chosen by the vendor.

And if the vendor becomes insolvent or decides to pull the plug …

The vendor reserves the right at any time to modify, suspend, or discontinue providing the Service or any part thereof in its sole discretion with or without notice. However, the vendor will use commercially reasonable efforts to notify you of modification, suspension, or discontinuance of the Service either by sending an email to the email address you provide with your registration or by a posting on the vendor’s web site. However, in no event will the vendor be liable to you or to any third party for any modification, suspension or discontinuance of the Service with or without notice.

Game changer: How many people monitor a vendor’s website for terms and conditions changes?

You agree to be bound by the vendor’s Agreement, and any changes posted on the vendor’s website. If you do not agree to any changes to this Agreement, you must terminate your account immediately, which shall be your sole and exclusive remedy

Hidden cost model …

Should the vendor issue new releases, revisions, or enhancements to the Software or Service available, you may be required to upgrade your software, at an additional cost, to maintain compatibly with the Vendor’s Service offering. The vendor does not warrant that any future version of the Software or Service will be backward compatible or that it will be suitable for your purposes. You must have a valid license to upgrade all software.

Bottom line …

Because you do not control your own backups, best practices dictate that you do not store sensitive personal or professional information in files which are going to a remote backup.

Files that have simple program passwords, like PDF’s, finance files are all vulnerable to cracking and you should not rely on the program’s security to protect your sensitive information.

In fact, should you choose the remote backup option, all files should be pre-encrypted with your own strong encryption system prior to backup. Some vendors will not permit the user to backup encrypted files, so check before you select a backup vendor.

You should ask the vendor if your files can be provided to you in another format (e.g. CD-ROM, DVD, backup disk, etc.) at your expense should you want to preserve your files and discontinue their services.

Beware of the fact that some vendors may earn additional revenue from government or other sources for scanning your data files for copyrighted material or other material of interest.

But perhaps the best advice I can provide comes from the Better Business Bureau: “Investigate BEFORE you invest.”

P.S. Parents beware: those cute pictures of your naked children in the bathtub could be construed as child pornography by some zealot and you could be responsible for thousands of dollars in costs and the temporary loss of custody while the matter is investigated. It has happened with online photo processors and computer repair facilities – so it remains a real concern.

California's Organized Political Crime ...

It often starts with a good public purpose …

On the surface, redevelopment agencies to combat urban blight seems like a way to beneficially assist communities and their residents.

“The California Community Redevelopment Act of 1945 enables any city or county to establish a redevelopment agency to combat urban blight that hinders private development and growth within a community. The redevelopment agencies cannot levy taxes to eliminate blight; therefore, they incur debt to finance operations.”

“In 1951, when the Legislature re-codified the various redevelopment laws as the Community Redevelopment Law, it provided for tax increment financing. The following year, voters ratified this action by passing a state constitutional amendment authorizing the distribution of property tax revenues to redevelopment agencies from increased assessed values in project areas. The rationale behind supporting the amendment was to relieve taxpayers of the costs of redevelopment by making projects self-supporting. Property tax increment financing is based on the assumption that a revitalized project area will generate more property taxes than were being generated before redevelopment.”

Politics and Special Interests …

Then it becomes a political football where politically-connected developers and other interests manipulate the system to provide funding for their private projects. With the largest profit stream being returned to the developers and the taxpayers ostensibly waiting to being repaid out of the higher taxes that are assessed on everybody within the redevelopment district. Unfortunately, many of these large projects are also “tax exempt” for decades while they reap the benefits of taxpayer money.

Look at the Kodak Theatre and all of the surrounding development area – and you will see for yourself the redevelopment district that is helping to return Hollywood to a commercial mecca for those with money to invest. I see high-end properties replacing slums, but do not see much in the way of “affordable housing.”

Kodak Theatre $50-million Retrofit to be Built All-Union …

“Home to the annual Academy Awards – and built by union labor – the 3,400-seat Kodak Theatre often sits empty for much of the year. Developers CIM Group are hoping the show [Cirque du Soleil] will anchor their Hollywood & Highland complex by drawing millions of annual spectators; other backers claim it will bring tax revenue to the city and thousands of new, local jobs to the neighborhood, which is 15-years deep in a major redevelopment effort.”

“In a time where construction money has been hard to come by, the retrofit will be funded in part by a $30-million loan from $350-million in federal funds that have been allocated to the city for job creation and economic development, thanks to the proposals’ strong backing from the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency and City Council President Eric Garcetti.”

“After getting a commitment from the developer that they would use union contractors and workers, the LA/OC Building Trades also got behind the project. The retrofit will involve 25 union contractors.”

“In a statement, a CIM representative said the company ‘is pleased to have the partnership and support of the City of Los Angeles in securing this Federal HUD [Department of Housing and Urban Development] 108 loan which will leverage CIM’s $20 million equity investment in the retrofitting of theatre and bring the Cirque du Soleil permanent show to Los Angeles.”

The CRA, says Norton, ‘was instrumental in pushing the project and helping them get funding to keep the jobs in Los Angeles, which is also helping revitalize Hollywood. It’s part of a long term-plan they have.’” <Source>

Why is the local, state and federal government participating in a $50 million retro-fit of the Kodak theatre while shunning homeowners in distress?

With all of the distressed property owners and distressed properties, one might think that HUD might have better things to do with its millions than retrofit the Kodak Theatre to attract the Canada-based Cirque du Soleil who might also be the recipient of significant Los Angeles and California tax breaks. Funny when you consider that much of Hollywood’s production business has been outsourced to Canada. But that’s union and special interest politics for you.

Now the California wants to siphon off CRA funds to fund another union project: the schools …

But what happens when the politicians steal from the community redevelopment agencies to continue to fund union-controlled educational entities without broad public knowledge and understanding?

“On July 28, 2009, the Governor signed into law AB X4 26 modifying the Community Redevelopment Law. AB X4 26 permanently shifts approximately two billion dollars away from redevelopment agencies to the Supplemental Educational Revenue Augmentation Fund (‘SERAF’) in each county. These funds will ultimately be provided to K-12 school districts and county office of education.” <Source>

Was it legal?

“The California Redevelopment Association (‘CRA’) filed a lawsuit in Sacramento Superior Court in fall of 2009 to stop AB X4 26. The lawsuit challenged the constitutionality of AB X4 26 and sought to prevent the State from taking redevelopment funds for non-redevelopment purposes. On May 4, 2010, the Sacramento County Superior Court issued its judgment in California Redevelopment Association, et al. v. Michael C. Genest, et al. and County of Los Angeles, et al. v. Michael C. Genest, et al., holding that $2.05 billion in SERAF payments required from redevelopment agencies are legal (‘Genest decision’).” <Source>

Apparently the voters who approved the expenditure of redevelopment funds has little or nothing to say about how they are used.

Last minute example …

L.A. City Council gives OK to long-stalled Hollywood office project …

The eight-story project will cost $60 million, Hal Katersky, the Santa Monica-based developer, told the council. Katersky said he hoped to break ground in the fall.

Several union officials also praised the project for the jobs it will create during the roughly two years of construction.

The blueprint dates from 2006, when the city's redevelopment agency moved to purchase the land for $5.45 million. But officials later learned of a second appraisal that put the value at $4.07 million. The differing appraisals continue to raise questions about the conduct of redevelopment officials.

Further fanning doubts is the fact that the plan calls for the parcel to be sold back to the developer for $825,000, more than $4 million less than the redevelopment agency paid for it. Katersky says he has already invested more than $4 million for design, architecture, legal fees and other costs. <Source>

Bottom line …

It appears that politicians no longer fear the people as long as the special interest will pony up campaign funds, media support and voter drives to insure that those they elect are responsible ONLY to the special interests and the public be damned.

It is amazing that the the sheeple do not give a hoot while their tax funds are looted – while the special interests get richer and the public employees get a lifelong deal which will make beggars of us all as we struggle to pay these “special people” their political tribute.

But the most amazing part of the story is it is the corrupt democrats that are mostly behind these special interest/union deals in order to keep themselves in power – while they loudly proclaim their disdain for capitalism and demand that the rich be taxed more.

It is now time to stop this circle of corruption by throwing all of the incumbent politicians – and especially the democrats – out of office.

This has been one single story about Hollywood. What do you think is happening all over the nation?
