The last word on illegal aliens and progressives as 2010 comes to a close.

How many aliens who have taken this oath and have emerged as American citizens have gone on to dishonor their words and promoted the interests of Mexico over the United States as activists demanding that illegal immigrants be granted the right of citizenship?

And how many illegal aliens, hoping to take this oath in the future, will set aside their allegiance to Mexico and actually assimilate into the culture of the United States?

The Oath of Citizenship …

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.

Bottom line …

When are the progressives in the United States Congress, both as democrats and republicans, going to recognize that the United States is a sovereign country governed by the rule of law and that the Constitution demands that the United States Constitution and the nation be protected from its enemies, both foreign and domestic?

When are the progressives going to recognize that English is the language of the United States and that any accommodation of any other language is only a courtesy and not a right to be demanded under law?

When are the progressives going to recognize that our resources should be reserved for legal citizens of the United States and that guests can be accommodated after the needs of legal residents are satisfied?

When are the progressives going to realize that they are they are fast becoming the enemy of our nation and that their policies are not only unconstitutional but illegal and immoral as well?

When is the GOP going to get the guts to stand up to those who would subvert the Constitution? Perhaps starting by demanding that President Barack Hussein Obama present his credentials for serving as the President of the United States and sanctioning those in the democrat party who may have falsely certified and sworn that Barack Hussein Obama met those criteria without examining his birth certificate, his school records, his passport and social security application and number?

Are we going to begin turning our nation around in 2011 or will the politicians become another protected class to rule, not govern, our nation?

Steve's 2011 New Year's Resolutions ...

Psychologists are constantly reminding us not to make resolutions that we are not likely to keep in the coming year and only serve to increase stress and frustration.

Therefore, I resolve …

To be more accepting of people for what they are – and not waste my time, energy or money trying to change them.

Barack Obama and his Democrat/Marxist fellow travelers are unlikely to change. Therefore, I will concentrate my energies on exposing their foibles and perfidies and helping to vote them out of office and our lives.

The GOP, run by the Northeastern liberal elites from Ivy League colleges, appears to be hopeless. They have not articulated a conservative platform and have not put forth any attempt at real leadership. I will save my money and support for those local and state candidates which meet my standards. The era of the responsible political party appears to be dead as both parties are neck-deep in promoting special interests in return for campaign contributions and voter support. Corruption, complacency and stupidity abounds, whether it is democrat-flavored or republican-flavored.

The Marxist-unions appear to be the second most dangerous force in America, right after the democrat party. We need to demand that the politician-union conspiracy end now before we are all bankrupt socialists.

To continue to make technology serve my needs …

To change the names of all my folders in my email system using a prefix of 2011. Starting out the year with empty folders and archiving the rest on removable media. (Hint: Don't forget to change your e-mail rules if you use rules to sort your e-mail into categories.)

To remove all of the programs I installed because they sounded cool or promised some benefit which I seem to have forgotten or ignored.

To clean out “My Documents” folder by archiving everything under a sub-folder labeled 2010-history.

To clean off my desktop of unused folders and icons (which should provoke laughter among my business colleagues).

To reduce the number of devices I use to accomplish real work and/or amuse myself.

To clean my desk …

A project best undertaken one folder at a time. I resolve not to print so many hardcopies of electronic files, although I am still afraid of electrocuting myself using a laptop to read in the bathroom.

To re-purpose my Tschokes …

I think that there must be some charity left that would be appreciative of those serviceable things which I now regard as “clutter.” And if not a charity, perhaps someone who is struggling and can find benefit in things I no longer use.

To take more time off …

For those who know me, I can work anywhere and am most likely thinking about something other than my immediate surroundings. I have never succeeded in turning off the flow of ideas – but perhaps I can staunch the flow.

And most of all …

To appreciate what I have and to share it with those I care about and who care about me.

Our nation is doomed if so-called "educated" people continue to think that our Constitution is just a piece of paper

I cannot believe, for one moment, that Ezra Klein, a college-educated, intelligent Washington Post writer would ever say something so unbelievable as this …

unless he was truly ignorant, corrupt and pandering to his liberal audience.

Bottom line …

Apparently someone who does not understand and respect the United States Constitution will not preserve, protect and defend the Constitution or America from its enemies, foreign and domestic. In this case, one must wonder whether or not we are dealing with ignorance or the promotion of a progressive political ideology which somehow is created by the intelligentsia and administered by thugs.

Are learned men so stupid as to believe that once they design the system, an armed thuggery will not impose their own totalitarian scheme of perpetual power and re-establish a common monarchy consisting of their leadership and the corruption that comes from needing supporters and special interests to maintain power?

And that these well-bred and intelligent “girly-men” will simply go along to get along to avoid the “unpleasantness” required to maintain their individual God-given rights. Such is the power of appeasement and concession, leading to the destruction of the greatest nation the world has even seen.

As the New Year approaches, consider a single question carefully. Do you want to live in perpetual servitude to a political class and its bureaucracy – at the expense of providing for yourself and your family?

Halting the democrat's Internet Power Grab ...

I believe that I am not the only person in this nation, perhaps the world, that felt great anger, fear and frustration when three “nominated” democrat toadies at the Federal Communications Commission decided to bypass the great majority of Internet “netizens” when they decided that they, and they alone, have the power to impose their rules and regulations on the Internet.

Let’s review …

The Internet is a free and open source of creation and connectivity that could never be found in such closed platforms as those run by CompuServe, AOL, MSN, Apple  whose dictatorial “take it or leave it” policies stifled both innovation and connectivity.

The Internet is somewhat self-regulating based on a free-market meme. The technical specifications and protocols are a collaborative effort overseen by the IETF (Internet Engineering Taskforce). The creation and management of top-level domains are overseen by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). And while other creative ideas, products and services are openly welcome, they live or die by public usage and acclaim. They do not require government regulations or subsidies to make them “popular.”

Those that abhor the openness and the freedom of the Internet are those with something to either hide or protect. The government wants to protect its political power and its secrets, the private sector wants to protect its valuable content, and those who supply connectivity want to profit based on the content that is carried as opposed to being a commodity-priced carrier of bits and bytes.

That’s it in the proverbial nutshell. Those who profit from the use of the Internet want to control it to consolidate and monopolize their control over the medium to promote their own self-interests.

Now comes the Federal Communications Commission …

The FCC used to have an honorable mission. To control the broadcast spectrum on behalf of “We the People” who are said to “own” the public airwaves. To do this, the FCC mandated technical specifications, licensed broadcasters and broadcast equipment to prevent unwanted interference with broadcasts.

Somewhere along the line, they morphed into controlling speech, social mores as well as other technological innovation. They became hyper-politicized and a tool of the existing Administration in power – where broadcaster’s futures could technically be decided by their support of the political status quo, their openness to  political discourse and, of course, lobbyists bearing large sums of campaign contributions.

All was well until we encountered today’s crop of Congressional democrats and the Administration of Barack Hussein Obama. A duopoly of corruption and Marxist political ideology. People who I believe do not wish America or her citizens well and are willing to do or say anything to impose international socialist/Marxist norms on our beloved nation.

The issue of network neutrality …

In non-Orwellian terms, network neutrality is simply the duty of each Internet Service Provider to carry Internet packets without surcharge, premium or time delay. All packets are treated equally and some are not treated “more equal than others.”

This does not sit well with the communications carriers with aging infrastructure and relatively low bandwidth. Just as the business model of the old wireline telephone companies has been superseded by wireless carriers, those who offer current services believe that they should be allowed to use their communications facilities to maximize their profit. Demanding a portion of that movie rental or audio download. Demanding a premium to deliver your commercial message or e-mail faster in return for premium pricing. Demanding that they be able to use the “telephone tariff” system to compete on the pricing chaos where special plans, time periods, one-time offers and other such trivia are allowed to disguise the simple fact that you are paying for point-to-point connectivity.

This fits in with the government’s desire to monitor the public’s communications for law enforcement – and perhaps political – purposes. The very same mechanism of “deep packed mining” that allows an Internet Service Provider to determine the payload contents of a packet is the very same mechanism that allows our government to intercept and examine all information flowing along the Internet Backbone.

And, lest we forget, there are the content creators who have paid a handsome sum, in money and support, to the government to insure that their content – even if in the public domain – remains controlled for profit-making purposes. They already have imposed intrusive and restrictive controls on hardware, software and now they seek to have the government control the communications networks. How many people know that their computer contains GUIDs (Globally Unique IDentifiers) which are copied into each file, disk, picture, recording and other digital product that links the content with the content creator (duplicator) and perhaps to the very individual who created or duplicated the content?

Back to the FCC …

Now, in the guise of “protecting the public” from evil communications carriers, the FCC claims it now can exert governmental control over the Internet. By the vote of three hyper-partisan democrat hacks operating on behalf of the government they want to protect and perpetuate.

But there is a legal way to say NO!

Even though the FCC has effectively usurped the power of Congress as the sole law-making branch of government and attempted to impose their will on the netizens of America, they can be stopped.

One, the FCC’s power is limited to the authority given to the agency by Congress. The President cannot override this power except under exigent circumstances dealing with national security.

And two, there exists an act, the Congressional Review Act (5 U.S.C. § 801-808), which mandates that Congress can review, by means of an expedited legislative process, new federal regulations issued by the government agencies and, by passage of a joint resolution, overrule the  regulations.

Will our Congress Act?

We have observed that the 111th Congress saw both chambers, the House and the Senate, controlled by far-left democrats with a toxic view of America. A view promoted and ratified by the President of the United States who could sign Congressional act into law or veto them based on nothing more than Presidential whim.

Now that we have seen the Tea Party Movement begin to demonstrate to the political elite that “We the People” are awakening to the clear and present danger presented by corrupt and ideologically-driven politicians, the 112th Congress will have a Republican majority in the House of Representatives and which will face a slimmer democrat majority in the Senate. Of course, unless the President is impeached, there is no indication that he will moderate his stand and move away from his Marxist tendancies.

This is a beginning. Both the President, one-third of the Senate and the House will be up for grabs again in 2012. The democrats will try to use social wedge issues, and  a very large minority and entitlement culture, to once again split the vote to allow a fringe majority to wrest control from those who want to stop this onslaught of Marxism, increasing taxes and the loss of personal freedoms. We must stop it at all costs.

Bottom line …

It is now time for the ‘netizens to weigh-in on the matter of a free and open Internet. To stifle and stymie the attempts of those who try to use the Internet to control the Internet from gaining or retaining political power.

We are at the crossroads … where both political parties must be made to fear “We the People” instead of “We the People” fearing our government. We must act and act now.

I suggest that you suspend all contributions to politicians, political causes and to those who have been complicit in subverting our America. To avoid, whenever practical and possible, using those goods and services provided by sponsors who continue to allow the government to politically mistreat Americans for their own commercial advantage.

And I suggest you take this time to re-examine your life and re-dedicate it to yourself and your family. To insuring that you and yours have a future that you can recognize and respect. To insuring that we do not devolve into a nation of Europeans at the mercies of their government and its unions. To insure that our resources are not squandered on those who illegally enter our country and demand that we support them and their families. And to preserve America as that shining city on the hill.

THE BIG LIE OF BI-PARTISANSHIP ...

The big lie …

All politicians claim they are against wanton spending of the taxpayer’s hard-earned dollars. Similarly, they are against government waste, fraud and abuse. They believe in a strong national defense and reducing domestic crime. They all agree that our infrastructure is crumbling and in dire need of repair or replacement. They openly acknowledge that our inner cities are decaying corpses where there is little employment and crime, corruption and chaos runs rampant.

So why is so little done if both sides agree on so much? Because they are lying through their teeth. It is all about their personal political power and the ability to retain their privileges, perks and personal profits that come with government service as an elected official. They care little about national defense and domestic policy – other than how it affects them personally.

We have never before, in the history of the United States, faced the clear and present danger of politicians willing to sell their votes and sell out our country for their own personal gain.

Personal honor and belief in God and Country is almost nonexistent in today’s political toilet bowl.

Politicians want and need conflict and stories of egregious behavior …

To justify their very existence – and if no problem exists, they will make one up.

To compare and contrast their viewpoint with that of those who want the same office and to promote their own political ideology.

For media attention – the media does not like to  report when things are going well, they like to report on the dark-side of America.

For fundraising – what would a fundraising letter be without an urgent target or situation that must be overcome?

To rally their base – without a tangible enemy, you cannot put a face on that which must be replaces, destroyed or eliminated.

To promise entitlements to those whose egregious stories makes America feel fearful, ashamed or just plain mad.

And to demonize their enemies – if one side promises good things, they are based on evil motives.

It appears that in this government you need your need enemies to survive.

Bi-partisanship: the race to screw the American citizen/taxpayer …

In  most cases, bi-partisanship is a “quid pro quo” (this for that) horse-trade – not a compromise, but a workable deal. Most famously, we will allow your side to claim credit for preserving the tax breaks, but we want an extension of our unemployment entitlement and pork-barrel spending. Both sides appearing to win – but, truth-be-known, the loser is the American citizen/taxpayer.

Bottom line …

As we rapidly approach the end of 2010, we must think about what we want for the coming year. Which politicians will serve “We the People” as “honest brokers” and which are likely to be race-baiters and hyper-partisans that do not bode well for all Americans.

It is now time to decide what your America should look like. An oligarchy like Mexico? A worker’s paradise like Cuba or Venezuela? A socialist democracy rules by corrupt politicians and unions like France?

What do you want for your children?

And most of all, do you want to continue to create special classes of people, the bureaucrats and their public employee unions, who are guaranteed a job for life and lifetime benefits which exceed those available to ordinary people in the private sector?

There is much to think about … and little time to actually ponder the consequences of your next vote and next action. Now is the time to consider what America you want to live in – and how much you are willing to pay for the privilege.

The real national crisis: political correctness and corruption!

It appears that our nation is so polarized that even a small majority can be the tipping point in swinging an election. So it follows that most politicians, especially the type that will say or do anything to gain or maintain political office, are afraid to offend the “minorities” lest there be a measurable backlash against their candidacy.

To add insult to injury, there is the governmental bureaucracy which revels in “extreme” events that only serve to reinforce the need for their services and to enlarge their budgets. They will take action on egregious cases only when the public and the media becomes openly vexatious.

Something is wrong here in America when our politicians and government fail to protect the people from vicious minority (Black, Hispanic, Russian, Armenian, etc.) gangs and illegal aliens who are rapidly draining our resources with nary a word of opposition.

Heaven forbid some activist should accuse a politician or a government agency of being racist.

Why are we not standing up to the gangs?

The truth is that while the police dress like the military, are armed like the military, they do not have the dedication, training and discipline to function like the military within our domestic boundaries. Perhaps because they are afraid of the legal consequences of accidental collateral damage and/or the personal consequences of having unprotected family members in harm’s way? Or perhaps their leadership is corrupt and cares more for their careers than they do upholding their oaths of office?

Likewise, why are we not standing up to the illegal aliens?

We watch our politicians sit idly by as a hoard of illegal locusts devour everything in their path. Of course, they are being welcomed by both the politicians and the public employee unions whose entire reason for being is to provide goods and services, at the expense of the taxpayers, to this toxic constituency.

How does this happen on Christmas?

As reported by KABC News …

“Authorities are asking for the public's help in finding the suspects who killed a 25-year-old mother in front of her daughter on Christmas night.”

“Cashmere James was getting out of her car on 85th Street and Western Avenue in South Los Angeles when two suspects pulled up in a vehicle, shot and killed as her 3-year-old daughter sat in the back seat. The girl wasn't hurt.”

“James was arriving to her home from visiting a friend when the suspects opened fire, shooting at least nine rounds. One shot struck James in the head, killing her instantly.”

“Detectives said the young mother was an innocent victim of gang violence. They said they believe the gunmen were aiming at someone else standing on the sidewalk behind James.”

Bottom line …

We are not facing social issues with neat legislative solutions, we are facing a crisis brought upon America by a generation of politicians who are so timid and corrupt as they are unable to take a tough line and tell the truth. We need to stop minority gang violence and the onslaught of illegal aliens. Preferably by law, but by force if necessary. We need to make our neighborhoods and cities safer.

This is not something that can be cured by “gun control” but the arming and training of citizens. Citizens who recognize that the public employee unions and the police cannot be everywhere they are needed, when they are needed.

We need to stop the pacification of America to the point where armed thugs roam freely and dispense their drugs. We need to concentrate our forces on profiling the bad guys and the hell with hurt feelings if someone is accidently stopped.

We need to marshal our resources for our citizens, not the citizens of Mexico, Central America, South America, Cuba or Haiti or anywhere else in the world. We need to stop rebuilding the infrastructure of foreign nations to the benefit of their corrupt dictators.

We have enough problems in the United States and, unfortunately, not enough leadership to go around.

How a mother can be gunned down on a city street without someone in the community dropping a dime on the shooters is symptomatic of our present lack of character and leadership.

Enough with the free passes for past historical wrongs. Enough with the politically correct tolerance of those who would hurt others. And enough with politicians who talk tough while they are surrounded by a phalanx of taxpayer-paid security. Perhaps we need to return to the old west when politicians and sheriffs were unafraid to walk down the street along.

I must be losing my mind and agreeing with Rachel Madcow ...

To my way of thinking, Rachel Maddow is second only on my liberal loathing scale to Joy Behar and right above media whore Gloria Allred.

In spite of the fact that she gets the matter of long-term unemployment benefits wrong (they are really an incentive for low-paid, unskilled workers to avoid seeking employment until after the benefits run out), she does manage to nail Newt Gingrich as a direct-mail scammer.

Considering the amount of spam I receive bearing Newt’s name, I would tend to agree. While there is no doubt in my mind that Newt is a very smart college-level professor who has an acute sense of history and a somewhat engaging manner of explaining politics, it remains that all of his various organizations are designed for the greater glory of Newt Gingrich --- Newt the presidential candidate, Newt the political pundit and Newt the well-paid author and businessman. Nothing wrong with all of that – but when it comes to giving out phony awards in exchange for handsome “contributions,” I draw the line.

Every year I am offered the chance to enter my name in some book or apply for some award – be it the Who’s Who of Blog Authors, the list of best bloggers or anyone of the so-called “small business” groups which are little more than shills for the insurance companies they represent. I am buried in both spam and direct mail seeking to “reward” me for my “significant” accomplishments, good works and various other sundry achievements. All for buying a “presentation copy of the book,” paying for the frame for the certificate or making a donation to the organization for “their” good work. All with no more legitimacy than my buddy Gary Halbert, the greatest direct marketing copywriter that ever lived, who offered family Coats-of-Arms to families who had no ancestral claim to royalty.

In Maddow’s own words …

Bottom line …

While I admire Newt’s presentation skills, there is something “hinckey” about his persona.  He appears to be on the edge of an explosive temper tantrum and I have trouble believing that he actually writes all of his signature works. Nothing wrong with that, artists have been taking credit for the work of their atelier staff for hundreds of years.

But I find that Newt’s actions in selling awards to be particularly odious.

The stunning hypocrisy of the so-called conservative GOP is adopting family values as a political issue only sets them up for failure when one of their members is caught in a “compromising” position or deviating from some unwritten strict moral code. The hypocrisy is that most politicians are amoral in and of themselves and will do or say anything to gain or maintain political power. They will knowingly cut deals to defund projects that are truly needed in the community to simply make a point about those who are abusing the system.

Pardon me if my cynical nature is, once again, showing, but I do not believe that Newt or the GOP has the high ground when it comes to flouting human nature and explaining they are the party of “morality.”

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t House Speaker Newt the one that was sanctioned by the House for using a tax exempt college course for political purposes? Isn’t he the same Newt that won reelection for an 11th term in office, then declined to take his seat because of the swirling opposition? Isn’t he the same Newt that left his cancer-stricken first wife after his affair had become public. And then cheating on his second wife with a House staffer whom he subsequently married and is now touted as a co-author on many of his media ventures?

Hardly a representative of morality and his ability to keep the sacred oath of marriage. I believe he is every bit a façade as John McCain – but with more intelligence and presentation skills.

I hate it when a loathsome television pundit is actually right when she characterizes someone the GOP is considering supporting for the Presidency of the United States. A man who is nothing more than a “go along to get along” traditional politician who looks good among a line-up of washed out political hacks and near-celebrities.

I sure hope that the GOP understands that they are the solution to the clear and present danger of increasing Marxism, statism and corporatism that is destroying America. And it is time to start presenting candidates whose moral compass and leadership skills can prevent the years beyond 2012 into turning into a further loss of personal freedoms and an era of ever-rising tax-fueled government bureaucrats who are supported by the rest of productive America.

Owner of Dallas topless club The Lodge stripped of entrepreneur award | Dallas Morning News

“Dawn Rizos didn't need any formal recognition that The Lodge, one of the best-known gentlemen's clubs in Dallas, was a successful small business.”

“But when former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's conservative group named her an "Entrepreneur of the Year," she was thrilled by the opportunity to accept the award in Washington and speak about ways to help small businesses.”

“That all changed, however, when Gingrich realized that The Lodge was a topless bar, not some other business in Virginia. He rescinded Rizos' invitation to a private dinner and returned the $5,000 donation she made to his group, American Solutions for Winning the Future.”

Believe it or not, but there are some physicists who believe that this three-dimensional figure may hold the explanation for everything in a chaotic universe: space, time, gravity and the properties of matter.

And then there are those who recognize, that in a troubled and chaotic world, this flag represents man’s unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Worship who or what you will, but remember America is one of the only places that you can openly observe your freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the opportunity to achieve all that you can achieve. America may not be perfect, but it is measurably better than any other nation in the world when it comes to respecting and promoting freedom.

Do not forget our troops who are serving abroad, putting their lives on the line to maintain your freedom and your right to protest.

Without Intervention, Mariana Crow to Become Extinct in 75 Years ... Who cares?

In essence, most research and conservation projects are about money and control: the funding of institutions and projects and the production of scientific reports used to promote public policies which only serve to justify more research and a political ideology which supports the incumbent class of politicians.

While we should be good stewards of our planet’s resource, avoiding air, land and water pollution wherever possible, and promote the study of our physical surroundings, perhaps sometimes it is wisest that we don’t interfere or tamper with an evolutionary nature.

Newswise.com is reporting …

Without Intervention, Mariana Crow to Become Extinct in 75 Years”

“Researchers from the University of Washington say the Mariana crow, a forest crow living on Rota Island in the western Pacific Ocean, will go extinct in 75 years.”

“The extinction could happen almost twice as soon as previously believed.”

“The crow’s extinction can be prevented with a bird management program that focuses on helping fledgling birds reach their first birthday, said James Ha, UW research associate professor in psychology.”

I have a few questions …

1.   Why a professor of psychology is conducting this research when one would expect that a ornithologist or anthropological zoologist would be most concerned with the bird’s welfare?

2.   Why are the birds “endangered?” “The Has [the husband and wife team of James and Renee Ha] suspect that the uncontrolled increase of feral cats on Rota is leading to the decrease of Mariana crows, much like brown tree snakes led to the disappearance of forest birds on Guam.”

3.  Why should we care or interfere in what is clearly a matter of natural selection in the ecosphere?

4.  Why should the United States allocate government funds in a time when our economic survival is as uncertain as the bird’s future and that they money could be used to help pay down our debt?

Once again, we are faced with an extremely small sample size, a speculative hypothesis and a “model” of the future of a species.

“Ha examined survival rates in 97 Mariana crowsCorvus kubaryi – that had been tracked between 1990 and 2010 by researchers. He found that 40 percent of fledgling crows made it to their first birthday.”

“The rapid decline of young birds is twice what researchers previously estimated.”

“’It’s the first year of survival that’s the most crucial,’ said Ha, lead author of a report on the research. ‘If only 40 percent of fledglings survive their first year, then we predict the species will go extinct in 75 years.’”

“The 75-year extinction estimate is according to a population model that factors in the estimated number of existing Mariana crows330 – with the 40 percent first-year survival rate, average number of fledglings per nest and fertility of female birds. Using this model, Ha found that 91 birds would exist in 20 years and that in 75 years the species would be extinct.”

Note the assurance of the statement: “Using this model, Ha found that 91 birds would exist in 20 years and that in 75 years the species would be extinct.” But there is no assurance that the model is correct; that other factors such as an increase in the feral cat population or a natural calamity such as a bird virus wouldn’t simply wipe out the entire colony. Or that man’s intervention would produce a healthier flock – especially if the birds were inbred with a severely limited matriarchal bloodline.

Like global warming where it appears to be impossible to model a chaotic natural system without tweaking the models and the data to fit a pre-conceived historical notion, I am not so sure that “guesstimating” a survival rate and then making projections is either meaningful nor helpful in the management of a particular species.

Here in California, we have seen the California Condor used to fund both institutions and scientists; turning the Condor into little more than an exotic outdoors pet with no known function in nature. The the public policy people decided that it was important to implement gun and ammunition control along the habitat of the Condor and all scientific reason was lost to committed political ideologues.

“Previously, biologists believed that the first-year survival rate of Mariana crows was higher, around 60 to 80 percent.”

“When Ha used those estimates in his population model, the outlook was not as grim for the birds. At 60 percent first-year survival rate, Mariana crows would dwindle to 218 birds in 20 years and become extinct in 133 years. And an 80 percent first-year survival rate projects that in 20 years there would be 453 birds, a growing population that would avoid extinction.”

There is no model, no logic or anything else that would tell you that 453 birds is a sustainable flock that would avoid extinction. This is pure speculation – an hypothesis based on nothing more that guesswork.

’According to the population model, if we can boost fledgling survival from 40 percent to 70 percent, the Mariana crows will be fine,’ Ha said.”

The crows will be fine? At what cost to our decimated economy when researchers are spending millions, cumulatively billions of dollars in research that does little or nothing to  advance civilization or make our environment more useful to those paying the tab.

“Monogamously-mating, Mariana crows live exclusively on Rota Island, populated by about 1,200 people and located 56 miles northeast of Guam. Rota is a U.S. territory and is up for consideration as a U.S. national park.”

“Ha and Renee Ha, co-author of the report and UW research scientist in psychology, fear that Rota faces the same avian demise as Guam, which has no forest birds.”

Here’s the pitch …

“The researchers say that a captive rearing program could save the Mariana crows. They hope to set up a rearing facility where they could incubate eggs from the wild, raise the fledglings until their first birthday and then release the grown birds into nesting sites on the island.”

This is not the only crow research done by the husband and wife team of James and Renee Ha …

“Animal behaviorists have something new to crow about. Researchers at the University of Washington have found a species of crow that distinctly alters its behavior when attempting to steal food from another crow, depending on whether or not the other bird is a relative. The Northwestern crow (Corvus caurinus) uses a passive strategy when it attempts to take food from kin but becomes aggressive when it tries to steal a morsel from a non-related crow. This is believed to be the first time that such a behavior pattern has been observed in any bird species.” <Source>

Bottom line …

It is my empirical observation that this is how the left-infiltrated ecological movement obtains funding for liberal institutions and its personnel. Especially in times when research funds are scare – made more so by the billions flowing to specious research on global warming.

At least Ha, to his credit, did not portray the Crow survival issue as a catastrophic planetary emergency.

I say that we cutback on government research in areas which do not advance our immediate well-being or answer the major questions of science. Turning crows into pets in a controlled environment might be a great method for securing funds … but I do not see one benefit other than to the institutions and scientists involved. Ditto the California Condor which should be allowed to flourish or go extinct on its own.

The Marxist/Ecological theory that we need to remediate the damage that man allegedly caused to the planet (even to the extent of becoming hut-dwelling vegans) is unacceptable to me.

While I have nothing personal against Ha, his fellow researchers or the University of Washington, enough is enough. We must draw the line somewhere – and folks here it is for all to see: we must take care of humans, especially senior citizens, before we spend millions on crows, butterflies, snail-darters, Delta smelt or other such research. This may alienate people for a perfect planet – but I would much rather be around to see another sunrise than know Medicare money was being used to save a crow whose value to the overall scheme of things is unknowable.

P.S. No disrespect to the researchers intended, but a more cost-effective solution would be to shoot some of those feral cats. That is, if your suppositions are correct.

Many a truth is spoken in jest ...

My best friend, Al, sent me this politically incorrect blond joke …

Two blonde girls were working for the city public works department.

One would dig a hole and the other would follow behind her and fill the hole  in.

They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day without rest, one girl digging a hole, the other girl filling it in again.

An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, "I'm impressed by the effort  you two are putting into your work, but I don't get it - why do you dig a  hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?'

The hole digger wiped her brow and sighed, 'Well, I suppose it probably looks odd because we're normally a three-person team. But today the girl  who plants the trees called in sick .

After reading it, I was struck with the thought that it is a perfect metaphor for today’s unionized city workers. People who are told what to do, how to do it and when to do it; without once being told why they are doing it.

And the sad part of the joke is knowing that the workers are not being rewarded for their attendance, skills or diligence in performing their assigned tasks, they are being rewarded based on little more than their seniority. After all it’s the union way of bowing to the idea of a Marxist collective over a capitalist free-market system based on individual performance.

One can only imagine the negative peer-pressure when a work crew actually turns in an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay … only to have their co-workers, and perhaps their supervisors, shun them or subtly punish them for exceeding the “collective’s norms” and making other people look bad in comparison.

And don’t, even for a minute, believe that this is not happening in other areas where public employee unions demand increased wages, benefits and retirement plans in return for reduced work that spreads jobs to other union members.

Bottom line …

Unless we break the strangle-hold of the public employee unions which is crippling our productivity and bankrupting our local, state and federal government … we will end up like Greece or France, where public employees run riot while garbage accumulates in the streets and the very people who pay their salaries are made to suffer greatly until they agree to tax increases.

Unfortunately, the only person to stand up to the public employee unions in public forums is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who is simply telling the truth when he claims that his state can no longer afford to do business as usual.

America is not about creating a special class of public employees who are supported and living in style while the producers in the private sector foot the bill. It’s a Marxist/Communist pipe dream of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”

America is not about a ruling elite that pretends to be smarter than the general public in order to seek political control over all American citizens.

And America is not about corrupt politicians who are simultaneously violating their oath of office to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution while conferring special privileges on the special interests in return for campaign funds, media attention and voter support.

In fact, the damn joke is on us and it does not seem funny anymore.
