Just saying ... Wasn't the primary reason to form DHS was so they could "connect the dots?"

If I remember correctly, the Department of Homeland Security was specifically formed to provide a comprehensive agency to coordinate intelligence and law enforcement agencies to “connect the dots” to prevent another 9/11 terrorist tragedy.

The DHS has failed in their mission. Janet Napolitano has failed to provide leadership to the DHS – spending her time on issues related to secure amnesty for illegal aliens. She should be fired. DHS should be disbanded and the various components reorganized along functional lines with a core services component.

It seems to me that the gross stupidity of the government can be easily illustrated by those who believe that adding additional layers of government staffed by self-protective bureaucrats will make the American people safer and reduce communications sight-lines.

What we need is to shrink the lines of communication, not stick additional desks in the chain of command.

As for allowing lawyers and civil libertarians such as the ACLU to dictate safety and security policies is crazy.

As for allowing bureaucrats to hide beyond anonymous leaks is also crazy. The media needs to start holding the leakers accountable for the damage they may cause.

And for those who believe that we need another “blue ribbon” panel, commission or report – you are out of your “effin” mind.

I know at least three people who could provide decent analysis and guidance based on actual, in-field experience. They are not bureaucrats and they are not politicians. They are results-oriented and care little for the bureaucratic niceties. Unfortunately, they would also just as kill the terrorists after interrogation than spend their lives in court being questioned by ACLU lawyers.

Lindsey Graham: The face of a RINO sell-out!

Once again, I am worried about the fate of the Republican Party due to the absence of a true party leader. Especially when the corrupt and/or complicit mainstream media – no friend to Republicans – is busy promoting Senator John McCain as the party’s senior spokesman and Senator Lindsey Graham as the face of the party’s junior spokesmen.

Both men appear to be RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) and have demonstrated their proclivity to abandon conservative principles in order to hop across the aisle to aide the democrats in the pursuit of their agenda. Thus strengthening the democrats rather than the Republicans.

The story of John McCain is both simple and easy to understand. Here is a man who is an ill-tempered so-called war hero for standing up to the North Vietnamese while being brutalized in a prison camp. But that was a long-time ago and it is his present history that bothers me.

McCain-Feingold – campaign finance reform, part of which is probably unconstitutional. This is the legislation which gave rise to all manner of funding loopholes and allowed George Soros to become the dominant political power broker for far-left causes.

McCain-Kennedy – an ill-disguised amnesty bill for turning illegal aliens into American citizens without first securing our borders and preventing the flow of even greater numbers of illegal aliens to destroy our social and economic infrastructure. Something which would further the rise of Hispanic politicians who seek to serve the needs of “their” people rather than all of their constituency.

McCain-Lieberman – legislation built on the man-made hypothesis that man is responsible for the global climate and that enlarging government, increasing taxes and eliminating American’s freedoms will save the planet.

And now we see Lindsey Graham attempting to push the same old climate crap down America’s throat. Based on highly suspicious, deeply-flawed government-run scientific research, we see Lindsey Graham jumping to the forefront to offer anti-American legislation which will do little or nothing for controlling the climate, but everything to enslave the American people in a system which features the perpetual domination of the political process by democrats.

From the Washington Post …

"I don't think the Senate has an appetite for another such epic, polarized legislative war this session," said Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.), who met with Sens. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) and Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) on Wednesday to strategize on how to enlist support for a compromise climate bill they are writing.

Compromise …

How do you compromise over legislation based on a lie and which will enlarge the government’s bureaucracy and control over the American people, raise taxes and subvert the individual freedoms of Americans?

Lindsey Graham – or Lindsey Gramnesty as he is often called – is not the face of the Republican Party as much as he is the face of surrender, compromise and John Kerry-style appeasement to international environmental interests who do not wish America well.

Bottom line …

Lindsey Graham and his fellow travelers need to be purged from the Republican Party in favor of principled conservatives who will offer their platform to fellow Americans and invite all to join us. As opposed to waffling on all issues and compromising with the democrats to destroy American values and economic interests in favor of Marxism and socialism.

In his 1984 Republican National Convention speech, Ronald Reagan said …

“Four years ago we raised a banner of bold colors—no pale pastels. We proclaimed a dream of an America that would be "a shining city on a hill."

“We promised that we'd reduce the growth of the Federal Government, and we have. We said we intended to reduce interest rates and inflation, and we have. We said we would reduce taxes to provide incentives for individuals and business to get our economy moving again, and we have. We said there must be jobs with a future for our people, not government make-work programs, and, in the last 19 months, as I've said, 6 1/2 million new jobs in the private sector have been created. We said we would once again be respected throughout the world, and we are. We said we would restore our ability to protect our freedom on land, sea, and in the air, and we have.”

And, in more ways than one, Lindsey Graham represents the palest of the pale pastels. A Senator who does not deserve to head our party or set its legislative agenda.

Will airline security be impaired by Congress over "unionization" issue? (Updated)

UPDATE: 01-07-2010 TSA NOMINEE MAY HAVE LIED TO CONGRESS

In a very troubling scenario, the TSA Nominee appeared to tell one story about a serious privacy issue which resulted in an FBI censure approximately 20 years ago. In that version of the story, he had asked a friend to use offical resources to invade the privacy of another individual without probable cause. Unfortunately, he may have lied to Congress. When questioned about the event by someone who apparently had more infomation about the previous event, the TSA nominee sent a letter to clarify his remarks and admited his original testimony to Congress was, to be charitable, erroneous. In the new version, the nominee admitted that he, himself, had accessed official records; not once, but twice. One might forgive a previous ethical lapse that occured 20 years ago, but a current ethical lapse involving lying to Congress is unforgivable. The nominee's credentials do not make up for a serious character flaw which may render him susceptible to doing political favors involving information contained in classified databases. Or possibly leading to the harassment of members of the opposition party. Since one cannot be sure that the nominee is completely trustworthy, he should not be confirmed by the Senate. -- steve

Original Blog Entry ...

History has been replete with examples of organized crime infiltrating unions, sometimes those unions involved with personnel performing airport or port security. Other examples exist where a union’s control over critical government infrastructure poses a clear and present danger to the public welfare.

Why was the TSA lacking leadership?

The Los Angeles Times is reporting …

“Vote urged to confirm TSA chief”

“A GOP senator had blocked Obama's nominee over concerns he would let screeners join unions.”

“In the wake of the botched Christmas Day airliner attack, industry groups, airport workers and others have renewed calls on Congress to confirm President Obama's nominee to head the Transportation Security Administration.”

Could Rahm Emanuel be capitalizing on the current terrorist “crisis” to direct Congressional democrats?

“The confirmation of Erroll Southers, a former FBI agent and the top law enforcement official at Los Angeles World Airports, has been pending since September. Trade groups and pilots union leaders say the latest incident heightens concerns that the agency still does not have a permanent leader.”

“Aviation and security experts made clear that Southers' confirmation as administrator would not have prevented a Nigerian national from allegedly smuggling explosive material onto a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit and trying to detonate it.”

“"The TSA has been rudderless, but it's hard to blame them, personally," said Bruce Schneier, a security expert and author.”

The real issue: unionization …

We have all seen the questionable activities of both ACORN and their sister organization, Andy Stern’s SEIU (Service Employees International Union) which appears to be headed by a far-left Marxist who is fond of promoting the old communist slogan, “Workers of the World Unite!”

“Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), the ranking member on the aviation subcommittee of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, has led the opposition to Southers' confirmation by raising questions about whether he would allow TSA security screeners to unionize.”

"’During a time when security is so important, we need to push politics aside,’ said Steve Lott, spokesman for the International Air Transport Assn., a trade group that represents most of the world's largest airlines.

We should never push “politics” aside when considering issues that involve our nation’s security infrastructure. Especially in an age when it appears that the democrats in Congress and the Administration are touting a far-left ideology that seemingly provides aid and comfort to those who do not wish us well, both foreign and domestic.  It is expected that the true threat facing the United States will come from within our borders and that our nation will implode rather than explode.

"’We will suffer by not having a leader,’ he said.  The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union representing government workers, made the same plea three weeks ago when the TSA inadvertently posted classified airport screening information on the Internet. ‘This incident further illuminates the urgency of appointing a permanent leader at the agency,’ the group said.”

Dual allegiance, conflict of interest?

It is of the utmost importance that those who serve the United States in functions dealing with security issues have an allegiance to the United States of America and have absolutely no conflict of interest that will compromise their security mission. There is no doubt in my mind that our enemies have infiltrated all of our government institutions, sometimes to the highest levels. Spies in the CIA, FBI and other government and military agencies are not unknown.

Jim DeMint protecting America …

“An interim chief has been running the TSA since January. Obama nominated Southers in September to fill the position. A Senate committee forwarded the nomination to the full Senate in November, and DeMint then put a hold on the nomination, a procedural move that can block a vote.”

“DeMint said he was troubled by Southers' refusal to answer questions about whether he would recommend that TSA workers unionize.”

“In a letter to DeMint, Southers said he would consult with employee and industry groups before taking a position and would not pursue any action ‘that would potentially compromise the safety and security of the flying public.’"

By splitting the loyalty and allegiance of unionized security workers, often enforced with peer-pressure and union thuggery, we would be compromising the security of the United States by allowing unions to control our security apparatus. One needs only to be reminded that unions have brought mediocrity and higher costs to government functions while protecting the jobs of employees who are technically incompetent or who perform poorly. We have seen criminals hired into positions of responsibility as a favor to union bosses where companies and the government does not want the hassle resulting from alienating a politically powerful union leader.

“But DeMint said Monday: ‘The attempted terror attack in Detroit is a perfect example of why the Obama administration should not unionize the TSA and allow our airline security decisions to be dictated by union bosses.’"

Senator Harry Reid, who appears to be the clueless  cheerleader for the far-left who want to drive this nation into financial collapse and hasten the onset of a benevolent form of socialism weighs in on the issue …

“Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), noted that the Senate wanted to confirm Southers and nominees for other posts by unanimous consent before the Senate recessed on Christmas Eve, but DeMint's hold on Southers blocked the plan.”

"’Hopefully, in light of this recent incident, he'll relent and allow the Senate to confirm Mr. Southers,’ Manley said. ‘The American people have every right to have a nominee in place at the TSA. The only thing Sen. DeMint is trying to do here is try to score cheap political points.’"

Yes, we should have a competent qualified leader of the TSA, one that places the protection of the public over party politics and the self-protection of the agency itself. A person who swears to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States – not to bring about greater inefficiencies and costs by allowing a strategic security force to be unionized. And, one may ask, just what is the union protecting these employees from? Especially considering the various levels of government review and their ability to take their issue to any court of competent jurisdiction.

One may also ask, can we trust Harry Reid’s opinion – especially since he represents a state where corruption, unions and crime were said to go hand-in-hand?  Considering that Harry Reid has lied directly to the American people on issues such as spending bills, healthcare reform and cap-and-trade, I think Reid and his democrat cohorts – many of whom are directly beholden to the unions for campaign funding and voter support – cannot be trusted in matters of national security.

The lack of common sense …

“Meanwhile, Friday's incident has renewed calls for upgraded security. Mike Karn, an American Airlines pilot and security chairman for the Coalition of Airline Pilots Assn., criticized the decision for air traffic controllers to immediately issue alerts only to airline crews that were crossing the Atlantic, rather than to all airborne U.S. crews.
‘The rest of the flights over the rest of the world had no clue,’ he said. At the time, no one was certain if the attempted terrorist attack was part of a larger, coordinated effort to bring down other planes,’ he said. ‘Had other airline crews been notified, they could have taken steps to limit access to cockpits in their aircraft, restrict passenger movement and been more vigilant about suspicious activity in the cabin,’ Karn said. ‘This is an example of not doing what common sense tells you to do,’ he said.”

Union people are known for slavishly following the book and being unable to “think outside the box.” They are risk-adverse and extremely protective of their co-workers; even in instances of clear violations of policy and wrong-doing. We need people who can put two-and-two together, to connect the dots, so to speak. We need exceptional people on the front lines; well-trained and well-supervised – not jumped-up, self-important security guards who like the feeling of power. Especially if they come from “powerless” backgrounds.

I call bullshit …

“The incident also raised questions about the limited use of whole-body scanning devices, which some security officials believe could have helped detect the incendiary material allegedly strapped to Abdulmutallab's body. The security screening device, which creates a type of detailed nude 3-D image of a passenger, was not used on Abdulmutallab when he boarded the plane at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. The U.S. Travel Assn., a nonprofit group that promotes the U.S. travel industry, said more testing of full-body scanners is needed to ensure that the devices strengthen security.”

“Before more invasive methods of airport screening are used, the Obama administration should establish oversight mechanisms to ensure that the measures aren't abused, said Frances Townsend, a former domestic security advisor to President George W. Bush.
’There are privacy concerns, and, frankly, the case has to be made that it's necessary and effective and that there are oversight measures in place that will assure people that their privacy and civil liberties will be appropriately protected,’ Townsend said. ‘I don't think people have that sense.’"

Heaven spare me from the so-called experts who tout “privacy and civil rights” when matters of life-and-death security are involved. Is there no more fundamental violation of your human and civil rights to be ignominiously killed by a terrorist with an explosive device?

One needs to recognize that there are lobbyists pushing the research, development, funding and employment of these millimeter devices on behalf of the equipment makers. They are overpriced and extremely profitable for the manufacturer. And, truth-be-told, can easily be circumvented by anyone that wants to stuff a body cavity with explosives. Or swallow explosives, to be retrieved aboard flight by using a powerful laxative. Does anyone wonder how drugs and other contraband continually manages to find there way into secure prisons under the so-called watchful eyes of unionized prison guards? Ask someone about “suit-casing.”

“Prison suitcase: Process of hiding/smuggling things by hiding them in one's rectum or vagina.”

Civil libertarians … aiding and abetting our enemies?

The far-left socialists, Marxists and communists have become quite adept at forming non-profit organizations to collect funds from do-gooders to be used to assault our institutions by using our own laws against us.

We are not being attacked by blonde, blue-eyed Norwegians, we are being attacked by mostly male Muslims of a certain age. And yet the civil libertarians prevent our law enforcement personnel from “profiling” the very people who wish us dead. We know that certain nations support state-sponsored terrorism, yet it would be a “diplomatic” embarrassment to cut off all travel from these areas to the United States. And it is even worse when we accept the proposition that we can’t deal with Muslims from Saudi Arabia – especially after learning of the Saudi link with the 9/11 terrorists and the fact that most of the militant Whabbist Mosques preaching Jihad are funded from Saudi sources.

And while we are pointing the finger at Saudi Arabia and our nation’s tolerance of their covert actions – why is it that the democrats join the environmentalist to continually refuse to make a rational energy policy featuring clean, cost-effective, sustainable nuclear energy which would make us both energy independent from Islamic Middle Eastern nations and reverse the outflow of oil money out of our country. Money which further feeds the Middle East conflict and their expansion of jihad to the remainder of the non-Muslim world?

Bottom line …

We need to be extremely vigilant over the continuing unionization of our government infrastructure, especially those linked to providing security and safety from terrorism.

We need to be extremely vigilant over the current crop of corrupt and complacent politicians who seem willing to sell out the American people for a pittance in campaign funding and voter support.

But most of all, we need to remain vigilant that the United States is not attacked from within – as promised by various communist and socialist leaders – thus leading to a takeover of our nation and the sacrifice of our freedom.

As we enter 2010, we must vote the democrats and the complacent republicans out of office. Take back our government and move towards those leaders that exhibit common sense. Perhaps one reason why the far-left and the democrats hate Sarah Palin. One, she has bucked her own party to root out corruption. Two, she has bucked big oil to win concessions for her Alaskan constituents. And three, she has a well-grounded sense of morality and ethics that is often lacking in both parties. To those who claim she lacks foreign policy experience, I ask you: what foreign policy experience came from Arkansas (Clinton), Georgia (Carter) or Texas (Johnson)? Nobody enters the Presidency with that type of knowledge – and hopefully they will have advisors who act as honest brokers to defend the Constitution and American people.

Start now by considering the issues facing our nation and discussing the matter with your family, friends and colleagues. Politics is not a team sport and we are not fighting over bragging rights – we are fighting to save our nation from politicians who want to rule, not govern, into perpetuity.

TSA Nominee: was "race" a primary selection criteria that outweighed competency?

For those who are going to shout racism and bigotry, so be it. But doesn’t the American public have a right to know how one of the most important law enforcement officials in the nation – a man that is leading the campaign for transportation safety – was chosen as a nominee?

  • Was he chosen because he is the best qualified person for the job?
  • The best qualified minority for the job?
  • Are we getting a political appointee that is more about academia, affirmative action, credentials collecting and political connections than a competent manager knowledgeable about security issues?
  • Or are we getting a hack with somewhat tarnished credentials, beholden to the democrats and their special interest unions rather than to the Constitution and the American public?
  • Is a nominees performance in previous positions more political than effective hands-on leadership?

Without much more than a cursory look at President Barack Obama’s nomination for the head of the Transportation Security Agency, I do not like what I see.

One, and most egregiously, the nominee has appeared to have been “censured” by the FBI for requesting that law enforcement officials conduct a background check on his ex-wife’s boyfriend in 1988. While the nominee has acknowledged his actions and claims that he has not done anything else of this nature, it does make me believe that he might be willing to do favors for friends and those who are politically connected. This single fact should have removed the nominee from any consideration as he used his connections to go outside of approved channels in dealing with personal issues. The rule is absolute: If you have both personal involvement and probable cause, request that your superiors conduct the inquiry.  Do not compromise your position or your agency with something that may appear to be an abuse of your authority or position.

Note, he only served in the FBI for four years – hardly enough time to master the intricacies of counter-intelligence – and left for “unrelated” reasons.  This raises red flags in my mind – especially since the FBI, under Obama’s Administration, refuses to release the details of the "censure" to members of Congress.

Erroll Southers, who was serving as an FBI special agent at the time of the censure, asked a co-worker's husband who worked for the San Diego Police Department to run a background check on his ex-wife's boyfriend.

Under questioning by [Senator] Collins, Southers said that he has not misused government databases to receive personal information on anyone since the incident and that he would not do so in the future.

"I recognize that it was a mistake to have used my official connections to investigate the matter," Southers said.

Southers worked as an FBI special agent from 1984 to 1988. He told lawmakers Tuesday that he left the FBI about six months after the censure for unrelated reasons.

The FBI has not provided a copy of the censure to the Senate committee, [Senator] Collins said. <Source>

Two, and of equal importance, the nominee refuses to answer a direct Congressional inquiry about his feelings about the unionization of the TSA. Something which would most certainly reduce the agency’s effectiveness while driving up costs. Depending on the union, it could also expose this nation’s secrets to our enemies, both foreign and domestic and be used as a method of overt and covert surveillance of high-value targets.

Three, the fact that this man served in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Administration makes me doubt his operational effectiveness and think that he may be nothing more than a high-profile “affirmative action” hack.

And four, President Obama has a record of nominating people with suspicious or flawed backgrounds for positions of importance. All seemingly based on fealty to the democrat party.

Who is the nominee? A collection of credentials rather than accomplishment?

This appears to be the biography of a credentials collector, someone with an increasing academic background rising in a political environment.  I do not see anything that would indicate outstanding achievements in the world of security.

Erroll G. Southers is the Associate Director for educational programs at the U.S. homeland security Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE) at the University of Southern California (USC) and an Adjunct Professor of Terrorism and Public Policy.

He is the former deputy director of the California Office of Homeland Security, appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger, and responsible for the oversight of counterterrorism policy and national pilot programs.

Mr. Southers’ experience includes counterterrorism studies in Israel, at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Israeli Defense Forces’ Home Front Command.

He is a former FBI Special Agent assigned to matters of counterterrorism, foreign counterintelligence, and a member of the Bureau’s SWAT Team.

He is a former Santa Monica Police Department detective, member of the Rio Hondo Police Academy faculty and tactical staff, and a court-qualified gang expert.

As an authority on the protection of cultural properties, he ascended to the level of Assistant Vice President at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Mr. Southers is A Certified Institutional Protection manager and is certified in homeland security by the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute.

He is a consultant to numerous international firms and regularly featured in the media as an expert on matters of counter-terrorism and infrastructure protection.

Mr. Southers is a Senior Fellow of the UCLA School of Public Affairs and a Next Generation Fellow of The American Assembly at Columbia University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Brown University and his Master of Public Administration at USC.<Source>

Bottom line …

I do not want an ineffective manager, academic with limited experience or someone without real, verifiable hands-on security experience heading the TSA. I do not want an Obama political operative who plans to subvert the TSA’s command and control infrastructure by unionizing the TSA to the point where discipline is determined by union contract and mediocrity becomes institutionalized. Considering that many TSA workers are nothing more than jumped-up security guards with little or no real training, I want the TSA leadership to weed out the misfits, improve training and build an agency on a par with those who protect Israel’s and Germany’s airports.

When the name of former L.A. Police Chief Bill Bratton was being floated for the position of Secretary of Homeland Security, I had much the same objections about placing a political hack/socialite in such a position. Yes, Bratton did have leadership experience, but his political connections and ambitions made him, at least in my mind, an unsuitable candidate.

I would prefer someone with a military background – possibly a Navy Seal commander or Delta Force Operator -- who knows how to think on his feet and will not make decisions based on political correctness or media considerations.

If anything, the nominee should head the plans and policy section of the TSA where his talents might be profitably employed and leave the leadership to those with more suitable credentials and work experience.

Remember: it is of the utmost importance to keep the TSA from being unionized -- unions will not make travel safer and might make the situation worse.

Sample work product: Suggested Guidelines For Museum Security

Airport Crime Under Attack In U.S. Drive

“Asserting that labor racketeering continues to plague the air freight business at Kennedy International Airport and inflate shipping costs, the Federal Government is mounting another drive to clean up a teamsters union local with a history of ties to the mob.”

“The Government's new effort comes after a dozen years of investigations that have led to the convictions of some of the local's top figures for extortion, racketeering and other crimes. The illegal acts, prosecutors say, included systematically extorting millions of dollars from employers by threatening work stoppages, slowdowns and other disruptions if the payments were not made.”

Mafia Ties Create Dock Security Problem

With all the recent talk about security vulnerabilities at the nation's ports, one subject goes virtually unmentioned. The men who actually control many of the nation's docks are in the hip pocket of the Mafia.”

“How can that be? It all has to do with the peculiar institution of the union hiring hall. No matter who owns or operates the ports, the union, not the employer, actually assigns workers to jobs. You can't work unless you carry a union card. And on East Coast and Gulf ports, the union card belongs to the International Longshoreman's Association (ILA), one of the most mobbed-up unions in the country.”

“In July 2005, the U.S. Department of Justice filed suit under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act against the ILA, which targets the entire 31-member ILA executive council, including the president, secretary-treasurer, executive vice president, and general vice president.”

OBAMA LIED AND YOUR PARENTS DIED!

Can you believe President Obama and the Congressional Democrats when they promise  …

to provide more healthcare coverage to more people while reducing costs for individuals and businesses -- and reducing  the deficit?

Capture12-21-2009-10.58.57 PM

Tell your Congressional Representatives that you will not support any party or any candidate who cuts $500 billion out of the Medicare Advantage program when they refuse to go after current waste, fraud and abuse in the healthcare system.

Demand that they support national competition between healthcare insurance providers.

Demand that insurance policies be portable between states.

Demand that they support tort reform to prevent outrageous jury awards and ever-increasing malpractice premiums.

Demand that they support the prosecution of waste, fraud and abuse.

Demand that they build a tiered support system that insures that American citizens and legal immigrants will receive scarce services over illegal aliens.

Demand that they support union restrictions in healthcare which continue to drive prices up without a corresponding increase in productivity and which allows bad actors to be retained within the system due to the difficulties of firing poorly performing unionized employees.

Demand that they increase the number of physicians, nurses, medical personnel, medical facilities, diagnostic equipment, medical supplies and other infrastructure before dumping millions of new patients into the system.

But most of all, demand honest politicians who will represent the people and not the special interests which have purchased access with campaign funds.

Douchenegger "spins" water on 60-Minutes ...

Once again, California’s gutless Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on CBS’s 60 Minutes – portrayed as an “action hero” trying to solve California’s deepening water crisis.

It didn’t matter that the state has been virtually leaderless while the socialistic California legislature spent money on themselves, their special interests and their social projects such as unions, gay rights and illegal aliens. Leaving the repair or replacement of California’s aging and crumbling infrastructure as a lower priority than insuring that illegal aliens were welcome in our state and that those that benefit from the influx, the unions and the “cheap labor” special farming and construction interests were satisfied.

The program featured a well-credentialed talking head who, once again, played up the interests of the far-left and environmentalists by claiming that the “Delta Smelt,” a two- to three-inch fish was a “bellwether” of things to come. Of course, no one, including the professor, knows “what things.”

All-in-all, the 60-Minutes piece had the feel of a pre-arranged “puff piece” which said little or nothing while featuring the governor as a “tough talking” leader.

Truth-be-told, his plastic action figure has more balls and leadership ability. While discussing billion dollar projects, not one word about nuclear desalination plants which could produce power in the daytime and clean water at night. After all, atoms don’t sleep. Here is someone who does not see the irony of blaming the water shortage on a drought and then suggesting we need to build more billion dollar infrastructure such as dams, canals and levees.

Of course, the reporter showed the “B” roll of the levees crumbling, but failed to ask the governator just what he had done in the past six years to fix the known problem.

 See for yourself ...

 Bottom line …

Once again, Douchenegger is auditioning for his next gig as “someone of importance” in the environmental community – where his far-left Hollywood pals would be impressed and, just perhaps, he could snag an Oscar and make as much money as former Vice President Al Gore.

Time to watch Arnie say “I’ll Be Gone!”

Janet Napolitano should be fired for incompetence ... if not outright stupidity! (Upated)

UPDATE: 12-29-09 NAPOLITANO CONCENTRATING ON AMNESTY ISSUE

It appears that DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano is not as focused on protecting Americans from terrorists as she is preparing the deparment to process the coming amnesty so favored by the open borders crowd. It also seems that she is down with granting amnesty to those who overstayed their foreign visas -- like the one held by the terrorist who attempted to blow up an aircraft with a crotch-rocket.  We are now learning that someone said that the terrorist's father's warning did not "rise to the level" where his visa could be pulled. How very lawyerly -- from the party of lawyers who want to treat this attack on the United States as a criminal act rather than an act of terrorism.

It appears that we are no safer today than we were on 9/12 and that "bigger" government does not equate to "better" government.

Original Blog Post ...

I am tired of Barack Obama and Janet Napolitano explaining that our government is conducting a review of safety and security procedures to protect against terrorists boarding aircraft carrying Americans.

Let’s review …

But for the grace of God, sheer blind chance and the relative incompetence of the would-be terrorist, the bomb would have exploded and not a damn thing that Janet Napolitano, Barack Obama or the Department of Homeland Defense could do would have prevented the explosion and possible destruction of the aircraft and American life. It is one thing to claim that you are conducting a review of all systems, procedures and personnel, it is far more important to take common-sense measures to protect American lives.

Enough with the bullshit about political correctness and profiling …

The flying public is now at risk …

It appears that there is no more effective anti-terrorism measure than making it “job one” to deal with those who appear to be terrorists. Starting now, all visas and passports held by those who appear to be Muslim males of a certain age are now canceled. Especially those who have traveled to suspect countries.

If a visa is issued to such a person, that person undergoes a mandatory background check, document check and strip search before allowing to board an aircraft. For those of you who might think that the new "millimeter" radar that can see under clothes is the answer -- it can easily be defeated by placing the explosive in body cavities which demand a strip search. That is, if they do not board an aircraft after having swallowed the explosive (like drug smugglers) and then taking a powerful laxitive to expel the drugs for use.

The silliness of not allowing bathroom access, sitting in your seat the last hour of the flight, not having a blanket or personal electronics on your lap is ludicrous political theatre. This is stupid … to maximize the damage to the aircraft, the bomb will be set off at cruising altitude rather than on landing when the plane is relatively depressurized.

If CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) or the ACLU should bring suit to delay, curtail or eliminate such protective procedures, their tax-exemption should be revoked and they should be designated as having provided aid and comfort to our foreign enemies.

Should an American be found on foeign soil to be aiding and abetting a foreign enemy, especially as a combatant, their citizenship is revoked and their ability to re-enter the United States denied forever. If they are found on American soil, they should be tried for treason by a military tribunal.

Idiocy …

This is the classic case that every American knows will trigger inquiries. A person buying a one-way ticket with no passport, paying cash, boarding an aircraft with no luggage on a multi-leg transnational flight – and no one does anything.

Bottom line …

Bye Bye Napolitano! Get a true manager with expertise in security to head the DHS.  Let Google do the computer searches – they seem to be more competent in performing large-scale background searches than the government with their puny database.

Remember: Janet Napolitano and the DHS did exactly NOTHING to make us safer. The terrorist plan succeeded – it was that specific bomb that failed. Only the grace of God prevented a tragedy. It is time to forgo political correctness in favor of safety and security.

Is Feinstein an honest broker for environmental interests or is she pushing someone's private commercial agenda?

Apparently this is not the first time that California Senator Dianne Feinstein is suspected of some ulterior motive involving so-called environmental legislation in California’s wilderness areas.

From my blog post “DIANNE FEINSTEIN: OOPS I DID IT AGAIN?”

“On October 8, 1994 the biggest gold heist in history occurred, but this theft lacked the melodrama of a Jesse James holdup or the excitement of a Brink's truck robbery. Nary a word was reported by the media even though this thievery was committed in the light of day. The citizens that were being robbed tried to cry out for help but the lawmen wouldn't listen because unbeknownst to them they were helping the bandits gain their booty.”

“The 103rd Congress managed to accomplish more than a gang of train robbers could achieve in a lifetime when they approved the Desert Wilderness Protection Act. ‘Instead of voting on the Desert Wilderness Protection Act, Congress should be convening a criminal investigation,’ said Donald Fife, spokesman for the National Association of Mining Districts. Fife was commenting on recent information that indicates tens of billions of dollars in gold deposits and huge real estate swindles may be the motivating factors behind the act.”

Sponsored by Senator Diane Feinstein, the Desert Wilderness Protection Act and it's companion bill known as the California Desert Protection Act create three new national parks and seventy-four new wilderness areas in the desert of California that would total 8 million acres (an area the size of Maryland). This will close this acreage to development, force out private owners within the protected area and close down mines and ranches. It would also expand the Death Valley and Joshua Tree national monuments and upgrade them to national parks. This is the largest wilderness land lockup since the 1980 Alaska Lands Act; largest ever in the lower 48 states. Senator Feinstein contends that the fragile ecosystem of the desert must be protected from development, but in reality the areas being placed into park and wilderness closures are not threatened.”

Through a complex series of land exchanges, Catellus Corp., a subsidiary of Santa Fe Pacific, would receive land that contains some of the richest gold deposits in the world. In exchange the public gets seventy-four widely scattered tracts of desert which have found no economic use in more than a century.

“Catellus owns over 400,000 acres of worthless land in the California Mojave Desert. This land was obtained by Santa Fe Pacific and its predecessor railroad companies as part of the ‘checkerboard’ railroad lands awarded for the building of the transcontinental railroad. Santa Fe transferred these lands which have been for sale for over 100 years, over to its subsidiary, Catellus Corp. In the land swap, Catellus Corp. will receive land from decommissioned military bases. One of the bases will be the Chocolate Mountain gunnery range. Unbeknownst to the public, inside the range is the world's richest gold rift zone. Geologists estimate that the gold contained in this zone is worth between $40 to $100 billion. These are surface gold deposits which are more profitable to mine than the one-mile deep gold deposits in South Africa.”

It is alleged that JLB Realty Corp. based out of Chicago, is tied to Dick Blum, millionaire husband of Sen. Diane Feinstein and that JLB allegedly will stand to make a huge profit on this development. In the name of "re-wilding" millions of acres of desert, grave financial and environmental damage will occur once the land is closed to the public.”

Déjà vu – Is Feinstein doing it again?

The Los Angeles Times Is Reporting …

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) says she plans to introduce legislation today to establish two national monuments on roughly 1 million acres of Mojave Desert outback that is home to bighorn sheep and desert tortoises, extinct volcanoes, sand dunes and ancient petroglyphs.”

“Its centerpiece, Mojave Trails National Monument, would prohibit development on 941,000 acres of federal land and former railroad company property along a 105-mile stretch of old Route 66, between Ludlow and Needles.”

“The smaller Sand to Snow National Monument, about 45 miles east of Riverside, would cover about 134,000 acres of federal land between Joshua Tree National Park and the San Bernardino National Forest in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Its diverse habitats range from desert scrub to yellow pine forests 9,000 feet above sea level.
The legislation, which had been delayed by efforts to resolve conflicts among environmentalists, off-roaders and renewable energy interests, would also designate 250,000 acres of public land near the Army's training center at Ft. Irwin as wilderness; add 41,000 acres to the southern boundary of Death Valley National Park and add 2,900 acres to northern portions of Joshua Tree National Park.”

Being somewhat cynical and extremely skeptical of ultra-liberal democrat politicians – especially those with spouses, family members and friends who seem to profit off of public deals, I am curious if this legislation is a method to bring further land under government control for the purposes of conveying some special privileges to political friends or to keep certain properties unavailable for exploitation as solar energy sites – thus driving up land values already controlled by “certain” friends?

Do I smell political corruption?

“The railroad land was purchased between 1999 and 2003 with $45 million in private donations collected by the nonprofit Wildlands Conservancy and $18 million in federal funds, then donated to the Department of the Interior.”

The Bureau of Land Management is reviewing 130 applications for solar and wind-energy development in the California desert, covering more than 1 million acres of public land.
At least 19 renewable-energy projects have been suggested within the boundaries of the proposed Mojave Trails monument, according to Feinstein, who has discussed her concerns with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.”

“Feinstein's legislation would assist companies with projects currently proposed inside monument boundaries in relocating to federal energy zones being developed elsewhere. It would also permit construction of transmission lines within existing utility rights of way to facilitate the transfer of renewable energy generated in the Southern California desert and adjacent states.”

Bottom Line …

I remain extremely suspicious of Senator Feinstein and her real estate entrepreneur husband who seems to have benefited from the Senator’s so-called independent actions. Considering that key environmentalists and groups also supported past Feinstein initiatives, I would suggest that there be a full and complete investigation of Feinstein’s potential association with special interests before allowing her cronies to plunder the public lands for personal profit.

Terrorism: Janet Napolitano -- over her head or out of her mind? (Updated)

UPDATE: 12/28/09 NAPOLITANO SPINS:  "Napolitano Now Says Terror Prevention System ‘Failed Miserably’"

In what appears to be a "face-saving" attempt to counteract her previous comments, Napolitano claims that her remarks may have been taken out of context.

In her own words …

Original Blog Entry …

What possessed Barack Obama to assume that a border state governor was qualified to lead one of the largest and most complex of the government’s agencies, the Department of Homeland Security, and stand as a bulwark against terrorism?  That is unless the Obama Administration cared only about easing the path for illegal aliens to become instant citizens, and more cynically, instant voters in favor of the democrat party.

In what Orwellian world or parallel universe; where up is down, left is right and evil is good, do we find someone that hides behind language and talking points to convince the public that her agency is doing a good job?

With the Obama Administration, they no longer refer to terrorism or overseas terrorism; it has suddenly become “the overseas contingency operation.” How very bureaucratic! How very politically correct!

TSA System Failure?

Now we find that the failure of TSA (Transportation Security Agency) to screen a known, listed terror subject – one who not only slips through the system, but executes their plan – touted by a apparently clueless bureaucrat as an indication that the government system worked well. No matter how you spin this story – the TSA failed to protect America from a known terrorist. And nothing Janet Napolitano may say or do will alter the facts.

Janet Napolitano, appearing on This Week and claiming success …

Mediaite is reporting …

“Janet Napolitano on This Week: The System Worked ‘Like Clockwork’”

“Jake Tapper interviewed DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano on ABC’s This Week, giving an early indicator of what the administration’s narrative on Flight 523 will be. Caught between the need to reassure a jumpy public, political opponents drooling at the chance to score points, and an unwillingness to tip our hand to those who would do us harm, Napolitano had her work cut out for her. Even given those factors, the Secretary’s overarching message was tone deaf, to say the least.”

“Napolitano sold the notion that the system worked, hitting the talking point several times:

I think the important thing to recognize here is that once this incident occurred, everything happened that should have. The passengers reacted correctly, the crew reacted correctly, within an hour to 90 minutes, all 128 flights in the air had been notified. And those flights already had taken mitigation measures on the off-chance that there was somebody else also flying with some sort of destructive intent.”

So the system has worked really very, very smoothly over the course of the past several days.”

“Tapper followed up by saying  ‘(Y)ou keep saying everybody acted the way they were supposed to. Clearly the passengers and the crew of that Northwest Airlines flight did. But I think there are questions about whether everybody in the U.S. government did.”

“Napolitano was undeterred:

Now once this incident occurred, everything went according to clockwork. Not only sharing throughout the air industry, but also sharing with state and local law enforcement, products were going out on Christmas Day, they went out yesterday, and also to the industry to make sure that the traveling public remains safe.”

“So, a man on a really long terrorism list carries an incendiary device onto an airplane, ignites it in midair, the detonator fails, the passengers jump the flame-crotched suspect, and he is subdued/extinguished.”

And Napolitano claims “everything” went like clockwork. Un – effing – believable!

Procedure and process over performance …

Like all bureaucrats and hacks, Napolitano seems pre0ccupied with spinning the story to cover up government malfeasance and a propensity to dwell on procedure and process over performance.

Both unacceptable from the standpoint of security against terrorists where they only need to be right once and the government needs to be right every time.

Proving that even when terrorists are stupid and traveling under their own name, the government can’t get it right …

One must ask how many children and grandmothers have been inconvenienced while the government bends over backwards to avoid profiling young men who appear to be Muslims in the known age-range of terror subjects? All for political correctness and to avoid upsetting CAIR (Council of American-Islamic Relations), the unindicted co-conspirator in a terrorist fund raising scheme, which has a propensity to run to the media when anything happens to a Muslim.

Symptomatic of an Administration that is all style over substance …

Owing to good fortune and the quick actions of the crew and a brave in-flight passenger, the terrorist was subdued. No thanks to anyone associated with the Department of Homeland Security. And for Janet Napolitano to tell the media that the system worked, is not only Orwellian – it is an outright lie. As anyone can plainly see for themselves. Had the terrorist been more competent or better equipped, a loaded aircraft may have crashed into a major population area causing significant death and destruction.

According to ABC News …

“The plot to blow up an American passenger jet over Detroit was organized and launched by al Qaeda leaders in Yemen who apparently sewed bomb materials into the suspect's underwear before sending him on his mission, federal authorities tell ABC News.”

“Investigators say the suspect had more than 80 grams of PETN, a compound related to nitro-glycerin used by the military. The so-called shoe bomber, Richard Reid, had only about 50 grams kin his failed attempt in 2001 to blow up a U.S.-bound jet. Yesterday's bomb failed because the detonator may have been too small or was not in ‘proper contact’ with the explosive material, investigators told ABC News.”

“Investigators say the suspect, Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian student whose birthday was last Tuesday, has provided detailed information about his recruitment and training for what was supposed to be a Christmas Day suicide attack.”

So much for the high-tech bomb sniffers, the dogs and the rest of the security apparatus … or perhaps that is only for political theatre to convince Americans that their government is competent and it is safe to fly.

The case for summary execution …

One can imagine the Obama Administration immediately calling the Department of Justice to arrange for a civilian trial in federal court – and then simultaneously calling the ACLU to insure that the terrorist receives a fair trial with all of the rights and privileges accorded to law-abiding American citizens. To me, the evidence could not be clearer. A case for interrogate and execute. Here is a spy and saboteur – operating clandestinely without uniform. A military matter for the firing squad.

Janet Napolitano needs to be fired …

There is little or no doubt in my mind that the DHS has morphed into an agency to big to be governed effectively with its current leadership. We need to head the agency with an ex-military man or terrorism expert with true management experience. Not an ineffective democrat political hack that is hell-bent on granting illegal aliens amnesty.

Bottom line …

Political correctness and multiculturalism will be the death of our nation. When our law enforcement agencies cannot profile and target suspects by known characteristics of evildoers than we really have a systemic problem. As for the rights of the innocents and the inconvenience – perhaps those who are Muslims should take a hard look at their own religion which appears to be responsible for about 90% of the terrorism in today’s world. Perhaps it is time to curtail visas for any Muslim and take a closer look at the Saudi-funded Muslim Mosques which are said to be fomenting terrorism with their radical Islamic teachings.

Yes, we have freedom of religion in America. But it is not the type of religion that demands that we all become martyrs for the cause – and it is certainly not the type of religion which demands the death of innocent victims and the massive destruction of property in the name of one’s God. As a people, the freedom of religion does not grant a nation the right to commit suicide in the name of political correctness.

Time for the incompetent democrats who confuse style with substance to be voted out of office and/or relieved of their government posts on the grounds of malfeasance. Perhaps adopting the unofficial mantra of the Strategic Air Command: “To err is human and to forgive divine – neither one an operational policy of SAC.”

Nathan Myhrvold's loony Anti Global Warming Scheme

I have a lot of respect for Nathan Myhrvold and his contributions to the growth of Microsoft. However, as we have seen in the past, well-credentialed individuals with a solid record of achievement can produce some pretty wacky and controversial ideas.

Associated content is reporting …

“Nathan Myhrvold is a former technology officer for Microsoft who has found his own company, Intellectual Ventures, which is involved in a number of technology development programs, including new forms of energy generation.”

“Nathan Myhrvold also thinks that he has found a cheap and reliable way to solve global warming, which does not involve upending and perhaps destroying the world's economy.”

“The global warming solution proposed by Nathan Myhvold involves  running a hose up to the stratosphere with balloons and using that hose to pump out enough sulfur particles to dim the sun's heat just enough to counteract the effects of global warming. The estimated cost would be about two hundred and fifty million dollars.”

“Nathan Myhrvold suggests that volcanoes and other natural processes already pump out sulfur into the stratosphere and that his scheme, if adopted, would increase that amount by only one percent. Nathan Myhrvold therefore thinks that there would not be any unintended consequences (like starting a new ice age.)”

My problem with Nathan is that he is starting from a false premise: that the Earth’s global temperature needs to be regulated by man…

Nathan is a smart individual, so one would assume that he recognizes that there is no answer to the question of what the Earth’s optimum temperature might be.

Or that man can overcome the naturally chaotic self-regulating nature of, well, nature. Admittedly, we can see that climate appears to be a cyclical process; but unfortunately we do not know it’s exact periodicity, amplitude of maxima and minima temperatures, the mean value to which nature invariably regresses or our current position within the cycle of climate change.

To assume that man can alter the macro-dynamic effects  of the Sun’s energy output, the orbit of the Earth, the Earth’s precession and rotational dynamics, plate tectonics and volcano dynamics, the heat storage of the oceans, the effects of ocean currents and the behavior of the largest of greenhouse gases – water vapor – with Myhrvold’s wild-assed scheme is almost beyond comprehension.

Let us assume for a minute that Myhrvold is posing a serious solution. Consider the chemistry involved in pumping sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere where it might combine with water vapor to form sulfuric acid. Consider what the environmentalist might say about a man-made catastrophe involving acid rain to contaminate the planet, alter the acidity of the oceans, cause plant damage, cause lung damage as well as possibly affecting the weather.

I wonder if Myhrvold has ever consider how nature really does regulate temperature? Consider the following: the oceans get warmer, more moisture is released to the atmosphere from evaporation, the moist air rises to form clouds which block the sunlight and further cool the atmosphere. Eventually, the clouds condensing enough to return to earth as precipitation. Wow: a seemingly self-regulating phenomena that does not require man’s input or any effort whatsoever. That is how nature really works when politicians are not involved. While this is a rather simplistic view since it doesn’t deal with the temperature of the oceans – where almost all of the heat energy is stored and whose deep current warming may take a thousand years or so – it does sort of make one wonder about the integrity and credibility of those who claim that it is another greenhouse has, carbon dioxide, that is the problem.

Of course, one can easily disprove the effects of CO2 by considering that there is some form of natural balance between the carbon dioxide dissolved in oceans and the amount of carbon dioxide found in the atmosphere. As the oceans warm, the carbon dioxide is outgassed to the atmosphere and increases the carbon dioxide level. Since the rise in carbon dioxide lags the rise in temperature by 600 – 1000 years (depending on the dataset and timeframe), we can assume that CO2 is not a causal factor in temperature rise. Sort of like opening a cold beer on a warm day and watching the carbon dioxide leave the beer and enter the atmosphere.

We know that natural processes such as weather are inordinately complex. And to assume that governments can mandate climate changes through political action is not only laughable, but downright dangerous to those who fear the enlargement of the government, rising taxes, tariffs and fees – and, of course, the reduction in personal freedoms.

And while I am wondering, I wonder if Nathan Myhrvold has spoken with Dr. James Hansen whose computational models deal specifically with the problem of particulate aerosols in the atmosphere – whether on Venus, Mars or on the Earth?

Bottom line …

Myhrvold may be the smartest guy on the planet, but he certainly has crossed the line into science fiction. If one considers that the Earth might be a better place if it was slightly warmer (1 – 5 degrees Celsius) than colder, man’s money could be better spent building more adaptive shelters, providing clean drinking water, improving sanitary facilities, improving the food production process and really reducing man-made pollution. To assume that climate change has a political solution is to be both silly and ridiculous. Climate nor pollution is cured by allowing gross polluters to continue to pollute by buying or trading government-approved and taxed indulgences created by some mythical forest in lower Crapistan. Nor will these indulgences add up to a climate change solution as proposed by the so-called independent, international arbiter of correctness, the United Nations. An organization which is thoroughly corrupt and sits idly by while its dictator-members slaughter their own people for political advantage.

Today, and on this subject, Nathan Myhrvold is one well-credentialed loon.
