THE GOP & MEL MARTINEZ: GETTING IT WRONG AGAIN

As headlined in the Washington Post, "His Task: Sell Hispanics on GOP -- Immigration Conflict Puts Sen. Martinez in Tough Position"...

"For many in the country's fastest-growing segment of the electorate, Sen. Mel Martinez is the face of the Republican Party."

"The Florida senator was handpicked by President Bush to become the first Hispanic chairman of the Republican National Committee, and when Univision announced its plans to sponsor groundbreaking Spanish-language forums for the presidential hopefuls -- one for Democrats, the other for Republicans -- Martinez was thrilled."

"'I think that to have candidates address the largest minority group in America would be a terrific thing,' Martinez said in June, 'and to do it on a network that the Hispanic community of America watches would be the right forum.'"

"'The Republican Party is consumed with illegal immigration right now, and Martinez is really in a very tough spot,' said Sergio Bendixen, a pollster advising Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) on Hispanic issues. 'He's got to represent the GOP, which is looking at immigration in one direction, and he's got to represent the Hispanic community, which is looking at that issue in another direction.'"

"Added Simon Rosenberg, who has studied the Latino electorate and runs the New Democrat Network, a think tank that helped put together today's Democratic forum: 'To be frank, every day Martinez's job is to put lipstick on a pig. It's not a pretty job, but he took it, and now he's got to live with it.'"

Getting it all wrong...

Correct me if I am wrong, but the task of the GOP is to build a platform for a better America so that like-minded Americans will join in the effort, not to pander to any segment of the population.

The party needs to differentiate between legal and illegal and uphold the sovereignty of the United States as well as protecting our vital healthcare, education, justice, and retirement infrastructure from interlopers who would overwhelm the system and drive us into becoming a third-world nation.

Legal citizens should want to stand with us because we are principled and interested in building a better America and a better life for all.

With those in power it is clearly about maintaining their political clout over doing what is right for the nation. The current GOP is dominated by Rockefeller Republicans -- people of privilege plundering the resources of America by pandering to the special interests. Social elites that are not fiscally conservative and behave like liberals when social programs can be used to gain or maintain power. People who have avoided the principled stance of Reagan conservatives in almost every way imaginable.

The leadership of the GOP needs to be more conservative, to embrace the principles of Ronald Reagan, to blend the ideas of Ron Paul with the face of a Fred Thompson. To offer attractive programs for all Americans regardless of  heritage, personal persuasion, or income level. To contrast the difference between the social liberals who would further weaken America's defenses while they bankrupt our institutions with liberal social programs doomed to failure.

The strength in the GOP is not the Hispanics or pseudo-leaders like Mel Martinez who couldn't even manage the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The strength in the GOP is US -- You and Me. We can differ on issues and everything in between. But we know America is great and deserves to be protected against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. We need to spend less than we take in and quit paying vigorish to the shylocks. We need to avoid balkanization and the continual segmentation of Americans. We need to stand as ONE NATION, once again, PRINCIPLED AND INVINCIBLE. And the GOP can do this better than the democrats.

What can YOU do?

Vote against those who tried to destroy this country by pandering to illegal aliens when they proposed and voted for the recent SHAMnesty legislation.

Vote for honest, principled candidates in the style of Ronald Reagan while rejecting those who celebrate the style of Nelson Rockefeller.

Our country and all of its citizens are at an historic crossroads -- your vote counts. Make sure it is an informed vote based on principles over pandering. Do not compromise your principles merely to achieve a political victory. We did that in California and got Arnold Schwarzenegger. A RINO (Republican In Name Only) who talks tough but cozies up to tax-and-spend liberals whenever possible. Don't make the same mistake.

Perhaps, after doing our best, the worst happens and Hillary/Obama is elected. The tide will turn as our fellow citizens see what really happened. The GOP will regain their rightful place. However, if we continue to pout and pander -- we will become indistinguishable from the democrats and be doomed forever.
