IS FRED THOMPSON A VIABLE CANDIDATE?

Today I decided to remove Fred Thompson's picture and blog references from my site. No, I did not decide to endorse another candidate or switch-off my conservative principles. Nor did I succumb to the blogosphere's wild promotion of Ron Paul.

Over the past month or so I have been re-examining Fred Thompson's actual performance. I have completely disregarded his poll rankings as I have come to believe that people are voting for the perception of what Thompson stands for versus the reality exposed by his recent performance.

There is no doubt that I am unhappy with the Administration and the leadership of the current Republican Party...

The Administration because they are ignoring the majority of voters on such issues as illegal immigration and healthcare...and are abandoning any conservative principles they may have had in favor of the type of political expediency which resulted in the appointment of Judge Mukasey over Ted Olson. Not that there is anything wrong with the Judge other than he is clearly a Giuliani man and apparently is held in high regard by such democrats as Schumer (D-NY) and Leahy(D-VT).

And the Republican Party because of leaders like the immigration reform cheerleader Mel Martinez who seems to evoke anything but  conservative values.

It seems that the curmudgeonly and,  I believe,  unelectable Newt Gingrich has it right. To succeed, a candidate must clearly demonstrate strong conservative principles, distance themselves from the current administration, and propose bold new solutions to our nation's complex problems. It is not just a matter of beating a Hillary/Obama ticket, it is about electing a conservative Republican candidate with candor, strength and above all, a sense of duty to the United States rather than to an ailing political party.

Back to Thompson...

What I have observed is not strength, not vigor and certainly not a strong response to the challenges of today.

Simply referring me to an older report as a blueprint of what should be done is not going to satisfy my need for Thompson to discuss the plans publicly -- open to challenge and rebuttal.

His handlers and campaign staff do not seem prepared as their candidate has either demonstrated a lack of general knowledge that should be known by anyone exposed to the news media or cannot discuss issues of local concern to his chosen audience.  Without a decent staff, the man stands alone, unprepared in front of an unknown audience. If he cannot muster an acceptable team, what does that say about any potential political appointments?

I can overlook his lobbying activities some of which are  negative and troublesome from a publicity perspective. I can overlook the money he paid to his family, allegedly from political funds. I can overlook his slow Southern drawl and shuffling "every man" demeanor.

But I can not and will not overlook sloppy staff work and his inability to know, in advance, what is likely to be on the minds of his audience members.

I judge his failures against my broad-based knowledge and cannot possibly see, at the present time, how this man could ask probing questions and quickly develop critical insights in a time of national crisis.

I do not want a "look good -- sound good" empty suit who must rely on TelePromTers and other Hollywood devices to present his case.

I want a knowledgeable candidate who can think on his feet and articulate his position with a clear passion.

Even political pundit Dick Morris has observed:

"He may be the tallest candidate in the race for president, but Fred Thompson is clearly in over his head! In both his fumbling pre-candidacy period and his hesitant, attenuated post-announcement campaign, he's given the clear impression that that he is ill-informed, inarticulate, badly briefed and downright lazy."

But, at least to me, the most telling comparison is watching Mitt Romney, well-groomed, well-prepared, encounter random citizens and audiences and respond in a manner appropriate to a politician.

Therefore, it is with some sadness that I have removed Fred Thompson's blog references from my site -- at least until he appears to be a candidate I can support over RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) like Romney and Giuliani.

I would much rather see Mike Huckabee replace Thompson and then use Thompson as a Vice Presidential candidate. At this point in time, I think Huckabee represents my views more than Thompson. As for Ron Paul -- great ideas, but he remains unelectable much in the same way that Ross Perot inspired loyalty, but could not garner the support of a wider audience.

As one of my readers, bbartlog commented:

"I wonder sometimes whether Thompson's perceived lack of energy is a result of his cancer. Nominally his non-Hodgkin lymphoma is in remission, but chronic fatigue is one of the symptoms of the disease. It's possible that his late entry into the race is an attempt to reduce the physical stress that comes with an extended campaign..."

At this point in time, I just don't know and it is up to Fred to convince us all of his viability as the conservative Republican candidate.

There is time for a turn-around.

What can YOU do?

Appearances can be deceiving, especially with those who are accustomed to using Hollywood stagecraft to create or enhance their persona.

Do not invest your emotional and financial capital in any candidate that does not appear to be able to support a Presidential bid. While President Gerald Ford appeared to be competent, but colorless and lackluster, it helps to remember that he was never elected by the people and did not have to face as formidable an opposition candidate as Hillary Clinton.

Do not vote for any candidate or current politician who is willing to subvert the safety, security and sovereignty of the United States for personal power, prestige or profits.

Continue to watch and research the candidates as the political silly season unfolds. Remember we should be electing a Reagan-like "man of substance" rather than an "iconic image."

PRIVACY CONCERNS: ACLU VS. HILLARY & THE DEMOCRATS? HYPOCRISY REIGNS SUPREME!

ACLU: "It’s six minutes before midnight as a surveillance society draws near in the United States. With a flood of powerful new technologies that expand the potential for centralized monitoring, a president who believes he can unilaterally sweep aside the laws that restrain government spying, a docile Congress and courts, as well as a cadre of mega-corporations that are willing to become extensions of the surveillance state, we confront the possibility of a dark future where our every move, our every transaction, our every communication is recorded, compiled, and stored away, ready for access by the authorities whenever they want."

The ACLU's concerns over the alleged actions "covertly" taken by the Bush Administration are the very same concerns that will arise from the "overt" implementation of Hillary Clinton's Healthcare Initiative.

It is ironic that the left-leaning ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has decided to rip-off the "Doomsday Clock" concept of another organization, the "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists " to illustrate their growing concern over the loss of privacy in the United States much in the same manner that the scientists used their clock to warn against the probability of a nuclear holocaust. The "atomic clock" is currently set to 5-minutes before midnight -- the theoretical point when the use of nuclear weapons spins out of control. The ACLU clock is set to 6-minutes before midnight, the theoretical point when individual privacy will cease to exist.

But as with all events that stimulate public conversation, this apparent leftist attack on the current Bush Administration also highlights the information gathering dangers of any administration.

It should be noted that the recently released Hillary Healthcare plan will implement many of the same tools and raise many of the same concerns as those mentioned by the ACLU.

ACLU Concerned over REAL-ID Act

I want each of my readers to note the extreme "irony" of the ACLU protest against the "Real ID Act" when the very same legislation that mandates the use of our social security numbers for tax and medical purposes already provides the very same information accessibility as the Real ID Act. The only difference is that the social security numbering system, designed in a much simpler time, has been corrupted by massive forgeries and duplications -- mostly from illegal aliens and other evildoers -- and does not contain internal safeguards like error-prevention check-digits and a coherent numbering scheme.  And, of course, the current social security card, displaying a name and social security number, has no biometric link to the card's owner or user.

ACLU on the Real ID Act...

"The Real ID Act is an impractical and unrealistic piece of legislation – and carries an impossible implementation deadline of 2008.15 That has prompted a broad rebellion within the states, who are stuck with implementing – and paying for – the act.16 Still, if it is ever implemented, it will quickly become a key part of the new surveillance society that we are seeing take shape so rapidly before our eyes:

A checkpoint society.

"Real ID would enable authorities everywhere – public and private, petty and grand – to sift through and sort out the American public in new and chilling ways, facilitating the construction of a larger network of status and identity checks and access control points."

Internal tracking.

"And each checkpoint established will create an electronic record. When a security guard, bus driver or retail clerk scans your ID card with his pocket bar-code reader, it would likely create a permanent record of that check, including the time and your location. The end result would be a society where citizens’ movements are monitored and recorded as never before. The handmaiden to data mining. Real IDs would erode privacy not just by creating more data, but also by helping to consolidate the vast oceans of other available data. By keying that data to our omnipresent Real IDs – and more importantly the database that lies behind it – it will become much easier to draw together all this information into coherent portraits of our lives for the government or others to access at will."

And Hillary's plan, using a "unique" identification number, no matter what it is called, will also reveal all of your intimate health details to government officials. I wonder how the "left" will react to having Aids, communicable disease or DNA-based tests associated with an absolute identification number -- with information available to the "appropriate authorities." It should be noted that the "appropriate authorities," even at the level of the nation's most secure intelligence agencies, have been compromised in the past by ideologues and evildoers. Protestations citing the severe penalties for revealing classified information are worthless as a deterrent to one who believes in their cause.

What the ACLU's real complaint is about...

Stripped of all of the rhetoric and tales of  the loss of individual freedom caused by information compromise and  catastrophe, the ACLU objects to the creation and use of  a single identifier which would serve to link disparate data in numerous databases to a single individual by biometric means. And like any technological tool -- it can be used for both good and evil with equal ease.

The private collection of data about individuals...

The Commodification of Information

"A major factor driving the trend toward data surveillance forward is the commodification of personal information by corporations. As computer technology exploded in recent decades, making it much easier to collect information about what Americans buy and do, companies came to realize that such data is often very valuable. The expense of marketing efforts gives businesses a strong incentive to know as much about consumers as possible so they can focus on the most likely new customers."

"Surveys, sweepstakes questionnaires, loyalty programs and detailed product registration forms have proliferated in American life – all aimed at gathering information about consumers. Today, any consumer activity that is not being tracked and recorded is increasingly being viewed by businesses as money left on the table."

There is no doubt in my mind that commercial enterprises, in conjunction with the credit bureaus, are compiling and cross-linking information for the sole purpose of promoting goods and services to the consumer, corporations and other institutions.

There is also no doubt in my mind that this information, freely available to corporations with the money to purchase the data, is being used by government agencies to circumvent their legislative charters which prohibit the creation and maintenance of their own databases.

What does not seem to be directly addressed in this report is the detection and correction of erroneous information about an individual. Many databases are hidden from the consumer and certain governmental databases can never be reviewed for accuracy. One need only to look at the credit reporting industry to realize how much garbage is contained in their databases.

One additional consideration, with respect to databases, is the technological stupidity of believing that a terrorist database containing the name "John Smith" or some other common name is of any value in the "war on terror." No competent terrorist would use the same name for each and every financial or social transaction. With the lack of biometric links, uniform name decoding (is it Osama or Usama) and a more reasonable premise for keeping such a database -- the database becomes a worthless tool against terror -- other than as a public relations stunt to show the government is trying to protect you.

Just Asking: Is the Bush Administration Tacitly Endorsing Rudy Giuliani?

Now that the Administration has nominated Michael B. Mukasey to replace the embattled Alberto Gonzales as the United States Attorney General, I have a few questions:

Does this indicate that the Administration is still unwilling to support conservative values in the face of an increasing liberal Congress?

Is the Administration's cover story that Mukasey was chosen as AG because the Administration feared a messy confirmation process reminiscent of the Harriet Miers' nomination or did the Administration succumb to the promises of Senators Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer to mount a vigorous opposition to Ted Olsen?

And most importantly, did the Bush Administration choose Mukasey as an implied endorsement of Rudy Giuliani as the GOP presidential nominee?

And thinking the unthinkable, will there be another major terrorist event that would tilt the race to Rudy? Or is their an tacit understanding that members of the Administration will not be investigated further under a Giuliani Administration?

Bear in mind that I am not questioning Mukasey's qualifications or judicial impartiality, I am merely questioning his connection to Senator Chuck Schumer and Rudy Giuliani.

Mukasey served four years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the federal prosecutor's office where he worked with Rudolph Giuliani.

According to Wikipedia... "In June 2003, Democratic New York Senator Charles Schumer submitted Mukasey's name, along with four other Republicans or Republican appointees, as a suggestion for Bush to consider for nomination to the Supreme Court. On the March 18, 2007, episode of Meet the Press, Schumer again suggested Mukasey as a potential Attorney General nominee who, 'by [his] reputation and character, shows that [he] put rule of law first.'"

Since retiring from the bench, Mukasey has made campaign contributions to Giuliani for president and Joe Lieberman for Senate.  Mukasey is also listed on the Giuliani campaign's Justice Advisory Committee.

"Mukasey has received past endorsements from Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is from Mukasey's home state."

According to the Associated Press...

"'While he is certainly conservative, Judge Mukasey seems to be the kind of nominee who would put rule of law first and show independence from the White House, our most important criteria,' Schumer said. 'For sure we'd want to ascertain his approach on such important and sensitive issues as wiretapping and the appointment of U.S. attorneys, but he's a lot better than some of the other names mentioned and he has the potential to become a consensus nominee.'"

Another DREAM FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS -- HIDING the SHAMnesty legislation in FULL VIEW as an amendment to H.R. 1585, a Department of Defense authorization bill.

Once again the "open borders" crowd, with the blessing of the McCain/Kennedy/Bush SHAMnesty legislators, are trying to sneak their amnesty legislation into an almost "veto proof" department of defense authorization bill.

Our only chance to defeat this legislation is to keep the amendment from being attached to the defense bill.

The DREAM Act, an acronym for "The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act" provides a path towards legalization and citizenship for young undocumented student who were brought to the United States many years ago and want to obtain higher education ... and who will serve as "anchor students" for allowing their extended family to receive the same treatment.

And who are the culprits trying to circumvent the will of the great majority of the citizens of the United States...

Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Richard Lugar (R-IN)

Co-Sponsors: (on the initial amendment)

Sen Hagel, Chuck [NE] - 7/16/2007
Sen Lugar, Richard G. [IN] - 7/16/2007
Sen Leahy, Patrick J. [VT] - 7/16/2007
Sen Obama, Barack [IL] - 7/16/2007
Sen Lieberman, Joseph I. [CT] - 7/16/2007

Sen Cantwell, Maria [WA] - 7/16/2007
Sen Salazar, Ken [CO] - 7/16/2007
Sen Dodd, Christopher J. [CT] - 7/16/2007

This is what the bill actually contains...

TITLE XI--CIVILIAN PERSONNEL MATTERS
TITLE XII--MATTERS RELATING TO FOREIGN NATIONS
TITLE XIII--COOPERATIVE THREAT REDUCTION WITH STATES OF THE FORMER SOVIET UNION
TITLE XIV--WOUNDED WARRIOR ASSISTANCE
TITLE XV--AUTHORIZATION OF ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATIONS FOR OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM AND OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM
TITLE XVI--NATIONAL GUARD ENHANCEMENT
TITLE XVII--DEFENSE READINESS PRODUCTION BOARD
TITLE XXI--ARMY
TITLE XXII--NAVY
TITLE XXIII--AIR FORCE
TITLE XXIV--DEFENSE AGENCIES
TITLE XXV--NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION SECURITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM
TITLE XXVI--GUARD AND RESERVE FORCES FACILITIES
TITLE XXVII--EXPIRATION AND EXTENSION OF AUTHORIZATIONS
TITLE XXVIII--MILITARY CONSTRUCTION GENERAL PROVISIONS

And this is only one, almost unreadable, sample of what they want to add as an amendment...

Notwithstanding any provision of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1001 et seq.), with respect to assistance provided under title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1070 et seq.), an alien who adjusts status to that of a lawful permanent resident under this title shall be eligible only for the following assistance under such title:

    (1) Student loans under parts B, D, and E of such title IV (20 U.S.C. 1071 et seq., 1087a et seq., 1087aa et seq.), subject to the requirements of such parts.

    (2) Federal work-study programs under part C of such title IV (42 U.S.C. 2751 et seq.), subject to the requirements of such part.

    (3) Services under such title IV (20 U.S.C. 1070 et seq.), subject to the requirements for such services.

From the League of United Latin American Citizens...

Senate Expected to Vote on the DREAM Act.

Immediate Action Must be Taken! LULAC Calls on Bipartisan Support to Make This DREAM a Reality !

The Senate has introduced the DREAM Act as an amendment to H.R. 1585, the Department of Defense Authorization bill.  Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), and Richard Lugar (R-IN) announced last week that S. 774, a bill that was originally introduced back in March, would be added as a provision to the DOD Authorization bill.  The provisions of the DREAM Amendment are expected to be identical to S.774.

IMMEDIATE ACTION IS NEEDED

If passed, the amendment would provide a six year path to permanent residency and an eventual citizenship for millions of undocumented children and students if they graduate from high school and continue on to college or the military.  The Amendment needs 60 votes to be adopted and its passage would be a monumental leap forward to finally passing the DREAM Act, but this amendment must be adopted first.

LULAC strongly urges an immediate passage. Each year 65,000 promising high school students are denied access to higher education.  Without legal status, their doors are immediately closed, despite having lived the majority of their life in the United States, learned English, volunteered in their communities, and successfully graduated from high school.

The DREAM Act can help these displaced students - who are without documentation - contribute to the national economy and continue their professional careers through higher education.

ACT NOW !  Urge Your Senators to Move this Legislation Forward. Pass Amendment #2237 in the DOD Authorization Bill.

It’s not just a DREAM anymore.  It is a reality.  Express your support now.

Our only chance to defeat this legislation is to keep the amendment from being attached to the defense bill.

What can YOU do?

Recognize that this is another attempt at reinvigorating the SHAMnesty legislation to provide "anchor children" who may serve as the gateway to bringing their relatives into the United States.

Recognize that this bill is not likely to be vetoed by a President who openly supports "open borders" and full recognition of all illegal aliens currently residing in the United States.

You need to write, fax, phone and e-mail your elected officials once again to let them know that "back-dooring" the amnesty issue without any social or financial impact is unacceptable.

You need to deny support for any politician or candidate the supports giving your hard-earned money to illegal aliens. Likewise to any person who attempts to subvert the safety, security and sovereignty of the United States and its healthcare, education, justice, and retirement infrastructure.

VOTE AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT -- IT DOES IN THIS COMING ELECTION.

ALAN GREENSPAN IN PERSPECTIVE: SELLING THE PAST, PROMISING THE FUTURE

There is no doubt that Alan Greenspan was a seminal figure in the financial history of the United States. Love him or hate him, this was the man at the controls of Fed policy.

Now, in his second life as a financial consultant and book author, expect the Greenspan style to switch from an ambiguous and incomprehensible financial-babblespeak to short, crisp sound bites and conversation starters as he pushes his book towards a Number 1 best seller.

The Age of Turbulence

The Age of Turbulence

Adventures in a New World
Alan Greenspan

Book: Hardcover | 6.14 x 9.25in | 544 pages | ISBN 9781594201318 | 17 Sep 2007 | The Penguin Press | Adult | $35.00

Blaming Greenspan for the current  mortgage debacle...

Mr. Greenspan won plaudits for achieving low inflation and unemployment with just two mild recessions during his tenure at the Fed. But more recently his record has taken some knocks. Some critics fault him for not doing more to restrain the stock bubble of the 1990s, and for responding to its eventual bursting with such low interest rates that housing prices subsequently soared.

This can be summed up simply: "a hero one day, a goat on another day." Greenspan's decisions may have led to unintended consequences that were amplified by subsequent events, but he was no more to blame for the current economic situation than any other individual who took advantage of the low interest rates to expand their customer's credit lines. Greenspan was not in charge of "fraud control" or "evildoing."

Wishing he would shut up...

Many people find that Greenspan's political opinions and projection of the country's financial future disturbing to their sensibilities. However, like all citizens, Greenspan is now free from government restrictions or self-imposed censorship and can speak about what is on his mind, regardless of the political consequences.

BUSH ADMINISTRATION:

Mr. Greenspan, who calls himself a "lifelong libertarian Republican," writes that he advised the White House to veto some bills to curb "out-of-control" spending while the Republicans controlled Congress. He says President Bush's failure to do so "was a major mistake." Republicans in Congress, he writes, "swapped principle for power. They ended up with neither. They deserved to lose."

Here Greenspan is absolutely correct. There is no doubt that President Bush's Administration was composed of "Rockefeller Republicans" rather than what the nation thought it was getting, conservative "Reagan Republicans." The President himself is more of a northeastern "gentleman" politician than he is a "straight-talking cowboy." Even today, his fights occur behind closed doors and he appears to be afraid to take on the liberal left in an all-out confrontation --possibly on the grounds that such an attack does not appear to be "Presidential." In any event, what you see is not what you got. And it is not only the President, the Republicans in Congress and the Democrats in Congress seemed to be involved in an orgy of "special interest" spending that has severely impacted our economy.

VICENTE FOX BASHES BUSH: Is this a publicity stunt to promote his book?

Today, it seems to be our "focus on books" day. Both coincidently from the same publisher, Penguin Books. And both on powerful leaders: Vicente Fox, ex-President of Mexico, and Alan Greenspan, ex-Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Of course, Greenspan is the more significant and powerful of the two.

Revolution of Hope

Revolution of Hope

The Life, Faith, and Dreams of a Mexican President

Book: Hardcover | 5.98 x 9.01in | 400 pages | ISBN 9780670018390 | 04 Oct 2007 | Viking Adult | Adult | $27.95

Dissing President Bush...

It seems that Mexico's former President Vicente Fox, who was widely touted by the Bush Administration as being friendly to the United States and interested in solving our common problems relating to economics, energy, drugs, border-crossing aliens, has personally dissed President Bush in his forthcoming book.

We owe a debt of gratitude to U.S. News & World Report for the following tidbits ...

"Fox raps his border pal as stubborn and 'the cockiest guy I have ever met in my life.'"

"While he expresses a kinship with W, he breaks with the prez on the war and slams the GOP's immigration platform. "

He blames Bush's stubbornness on Iraq for bad international relations, calls his Spanish 'grade-school level,' and admits he didn't think Bush would ever become president. 'I can't honestly say that I had ever seen George W. Bush getting to the White House,' he pens.

From the advance publicity blurb supplied by the publisher...

"When Vicente Fox swept into office in 2000, he broke the dictatorial one-party rule that had strangled Mexico for over seventy years."

Apparently true, but Mexico still remains controlled by its wealthiest families who seem to invest in Mexican politicians as they do in profitable corporations. What is not being controlled by the oligarchs is being divided by the government and the evildoers. The middle class is almost non-existent.

A native son of Mexico, grandson of immigrants from the United States and Spain, Fox worked his way from ranch hand and truck driver to the youngest CEO in the history of Coca-Cola. His political rise from precinct worker to world leader was equally swift.

You think he would have a better record on governmental cooperation with the United States.

As president, Vicente Fox steered Mexico’s fragile young democracy through turbulent times, ushering in six years of economic stability and reform in health care, education, and housing, with increased freedom of the press.

I wonder if he takes into account the American contribution to Mexico's economy: NAFTA, the drug market, the repatriation of money back to worker's families still in Mexico and the reduction of poverty by exporting it to the United States.

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to American citizens: SCREW-U!

Working around Congress and those pesky people who object to giving "legalized status" to illegal aliens and their extended  families...

When the Administration cannot persuade Congress or American citizens to go along with their outrageous proposals, they turn to a hyper-technical trick of simply getting an administrative agency to put forth an interim rule or final rule that accomplishes their goals.

In this case, we find the  United States Citizenship and Immigration Services giving aid and comfort to illegal aliens though the device of a "U-Visa."

According to the summary contained in the Federal Register...

This interim rule amends Department of Homeland Security regulations to establish the requirements and procedures for aliens seeking U nonimmigrant status. The U nonimmigrant classification is available to alien victims of certain criminal activity who assist government officials in investigating or prosecuting such criminal activity. The purpose of the U nonimmigrant classification is to strengthen the ability of law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute such crimes as domestic violence, sexual assault, and trafficking in persons, while offering protection to alien crime victims in keeping with the humanitarian interests of the United States.

Who is eligible? ...

To qualify for the U nonimmigrant classification:

    • The alien must have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse as a result of having
      been a victim of qualifying criminal activity;
    • The alien must be in possession of information about the criminal activity of which he or she has been a victim;
    • The alien must be of assistance to a Federal, State, or local law enforcement official or prosecutor, a Federal or State judge, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), or
other Federal, State, or local authority investigating or prosecuting criminal activity; and
    • The criminal activity must have violated U.S. law or occurred in the United States (including Indian country and military installations) or the territories and possessions of the United States.

CALIFORNIA "DREAM ACT" IS A NIGHTMARE FOR LEGITIMATE TAX-PAYING CITIZENS -- AND A "DREAM" ONLY FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Introducing "One Bill Gil"...

It is no secret that a number of California politicians act as if their allegiance was to Mexico and the illegal aliens who cross our borders without legal right or permission. One of the most outspoken is California Senator Gil Cedillo, nicknamed "One Bill Gil" for his persistent introduction of legislation which would provide "gateway" documentation in the form of valid California driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

Senate Bill S.B. 160 is misnamed and inappropriate...

Cedillo now has the nerve to sponsor legislation misnamed the "California Dream Act" which attempts to allow illegal aliens to further tap the pockets of legal, law-abiding residents in order to subsidize their education.

Illegal Aliens receive preference over active members of our armed forces...

It is bad enough that members of our armed forces are forced to pay "non-resident" student tuition while serving in California, but any illegal alien qualifies for the heavily subsidized "resident" tuition rate.

Now, Cedillo proposes that we provide these very same illegal aliens with access to tuition assistance and other financial support.

According to the California Legislative Analyst...

"Effectively, the bill provided in-state tuition on the basis of secondary school attendance rather than legal residency. This bill would allow pupils exempted from nonresident status through AB 540 to also receive state and institutional aid, including fee waivers from community colleges."

"According to estimates made by the Pew Hispanic Center, there were nearly 11 million undocumented residents in the United States, as of March 2005, and 24% of them lived in California. Assuming the percentage of undocumented between the ages of 18 and 39 is the same in California as it is nationwide (72%), California may have approximately 1.9 million undocumented residents in this age range. If 1/3rd of those residents are under 25, then California would have roughly 633,000 undocumented residents that meet a reasonable definition of college-aged."

"Thus, the maximum cost exposure to the state is high."

And who is voting in favor of this bill -- the liberal "can't we all just get along" socialistic open borders crowd...

Torlakson * Cox * Aanestad * Ashburn * Calderon  * Cedillo Corbett  * Correa  * Dutton * Florez  * Kuehl * Oropeza Ridley-Thomas * Runner * Wyland  * Yee

What can YOU do?

Become better informed about the stresses and strains inflicted California's infrastructure by illegal aliens who cost the government $22,000 above and beyond any benefits they provide or tax revenue they may pay.

Write the Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to veto this current version of the bill as he vetoed similar legislation in 2005. Use this link to e-mail the governor.

Write your representatives to explain that you demand that they not squander California's precious tax dollars on illegal aliens and start repairing some of the infrastructure damaged by the hoard of aliens who have violated our sovereignty when they crossed the border.

Do not support any California politician whose allegiance to the United States is suspect and who is voting to penalize California's taxpayers to provide "citizenship" rights to Mexican nationals and others who have no legal right to be present in California.

Do not support any national candidate or politician who feels the same way about providing the fruits of our labor to illegal aliens in a grand humanitarian gesture... which only encourages more illegal behavior.

WHY DOES THE DEMOCRAT PARTY WANT A RETURN TO CHAOS AND CORRUPTION? Do they really want to regain their power so badly as to return to the "bad old days?"

According to the Associated Press, Hillary Rodham Clinton's brother, Tony Rodham, settled a lawsuit for failing to repay $107,000 to two carnival operators days before the scheduled trial date. The main issue was whether this was a loan or a payment for unspecified consulting services which led to the couple's Presidential Pardon in 2000.

According to the Associated Press report...

"Tony Rodham was accused of failing to repay $107,000 plus interest to the bankrupt estate of Edgar Allen Gregory Jr. and his wife, Vonna Jo, both of whom received a presidential pardon in 2000. "

"The case was scheduled to go to trial on Thursday, but the parties reached a settlement agreement, said Rodham attorney Samuel Crocker. The terms were not disclosed."

"Rodham had claimed in court documents the money he received from the Gregorys was for consulting services, but the trustee for the Gregory estate said it was a loan."

"The Gregorys received pardons for a bank fraud conviction from President Clinton about two years after Rodham became a paid consultant to United Shows of America, a carnival business the couple owned."

"Rodham has said he talked to his brother-in-law about the pardon, but he said President Clinton made the decision to grant clemency on the merits of their case."

A subsequent investigation of the matter by the House Committee on Government Reform found that the Gregory's company, United Shows, paid Tony Rodham approximately $240,000 for " undocumented consulting services" and that President Clinton "was interested in the pardons solely because of his contacts with Rodham."

Of course Hillary has always maintained that there was no "quid pro quo" and that her brother did not receive any payments associated with the pardon.

Apparently, being accused of selling pardons was a Rodham family thing.

Again, according to the Associated Press...

"Another brother, Hugh Rodham, was paid more than $400,000 for his successful efforts to win pardons for a businessman under investigation for money laundering and a commutation for a convicted drug trafficker. He eventually returned the money at his sister's request. "

And there is the infamous case of Marc Rich who was busy becoming one of the biggest tax evaders in the United States history and who allegedly with his partner, Pincus Green, was suspected of making illegal oil deals with Iran in defiance of a U.S. prohibition on trading or doing business with Iran.

Of course, again, the Clinton's claimed that there was no quid pro quo although "Rich's ex-wife, songwriter Denise Rich, contributed $450,000 to the Clinton presidential library project, $1.1 million to the Democratic Party and at least $109,000 to Hillary Clinton's bid for the Senate."

These do not appear to be isolated events and speak to a pattern of corruption.

According to Wikipedia, some of the more controversial pardons include...

  • Carlos A. Vignali had his sentence for cocaine trafficking commuted, after serving 6 of 15 years in federal prison.
  • Almon Glenn Braswell was pardoned of his mail fraud and perjury convictions, even while a federal investigation was underway regarding additional money laundering and tax evasion charges. Braswell and Carlos Vignali each paid approximately $200,000 to Hillary Clinton's brother, Hugh Rodham, to represent their respective cases for clemency. Hugh Rodham returned the payments after they were disclosed to the public. Braswell would later invoke the Fifth Amendment at a Senate Committee hearing in 2001, when questioned about allegations of his having systematically defrauded senior citizens of millions of dollars.
  • Susan McDougal, who had already completed her sentence, was pardoned for her role in the Whitewater scandal; McDougal had served 18 months on contempt charges for refusing to testify about Clinton's role.
  • Dan Rostenkowski, a former Democratic Congressman convicted in the Congressional Post Office Scandal. Rostenkowski had served his entire sentence.
  • Melvin J. Reynolds, a Democratic Congressman from Illinois, who was convicted of bank fraud, 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice, and solicitation of child pornography had his sentence commuted on the bank fraud charged and was allowed to serve the final months under the auspices of a half way house. He had served his entire sentence on child sex abuse charges before the commutation of the later convictions.
  • Roger Clinton, the president's half-brother, on drug charges after having served the entire sentence more than a decade before.

IS OPRAH WHAT IS WRONG WITH AMERICA?

I am sure that Oprah Winfrey is an accomplished entertainer, a savvy businesswoman, caring and compassionate, and, all-in-all, a decent human being. Her personal story of rags-to-riches should serve as an inspiration to us all. But she is also symptomatic of what is wrong with America.

Where any number of men and women blindly follow someone that they know only through their highly-controlled television appearances and who can project knowledge, competence and sincerity through their chosen media.

Where people suspend their common sense and fail to personally research subjects that will greatly affect their lives for years to come in favor of recommendations made by their favorite celebrities.

It has often been said that the average American spends more time and effort researching and planning their vacations than they spend on investigating candidates for office -- people who will not entertain them, but rule over them with their implied consent to act in their name.

There is no doubt that we are witnessing a laziness brought upon by pre-packaging everything to make it acceptable to the masses? Where easy-to-digest sound bites and bumper stickers take precedence over reason and debate.

Why did I choose Oprah as the subject of this blog post?

Precisely because of the trust and esteem that she engenders in her audience. And her apparent support of Barack Obama whom I strongly believe is not qualified for the office he seeks.

I can find little evidence that Oprah concerns herself with political matters other than hosting politicians on her program. While her personal voting record, and whether or not she even votes, is her business. But when she openly supports a candidate, then it becomes the nation's business. Especially if she inspires a goodly number of people to suspend their critical judgement and jump on the bandwagon.

She is not selling a product or a service...

She is not selling books, cosmetics or even psychological self-help, as in promoting a Dr. Phil... she is implicitly providing Obama with her stamp of approval.

...And I believe he is not a worthy candidate!

I do not know or much care if Oprah is supporting Obama for reasons of race, hometown loyalty or even if she sees or senses something worthwhile in the candidate. I only know that a number of people will be influenced by her tacit acceptance of his candidacy.

As with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama is an unseasoned junior Senator who lacks practical political experience and whose background and loyalties are somewhat suspect. More a creation of myth and media than actual substance. Unlike Hillary whose entire existence is surrounded by chaos and corruption, Obama appears to have cleaner background -- but who really knows?
