PROBABILITY: THE UNCERTAINTY FACTOR IN SCIENCE -- SCIENTISTS CLAIM 1,000-YEAR EARTHQUAKE LULL IN LOS ANGELES -- INDICATOR OF INCREASED RISK?

GREAT!  Days after posting my blog entry questioning the safety of some of the welded steel moment frame  (WSMF) high-rise buildings which experienced various degrees of failure in the Northridge Quake of 1994 and in which I noted that the famed seismologist Lucy Jones, of the United States Geological Survey, said that the Andreas Fault/San Jacinto fault area was 300 years overdue for a massive quake, we get another earthquake study affecting the Southern California region.

This time from the scientists at USC (University of Southern California) who now claim that there may be a link connecting the desert areas (which are experiencing more quakes) and the Los Angeles basin which is experiencing less quakes than would be predicted by the statistical analysis of historical records.

According to USC College Professor, James Dolan, "Earthquakes under the basin at historic low."  "The Los Angeles basin appears to be in a seismic 'lull'  characterized by relatively smaller and infrequent earthquakes, according to a study in the September issue of Geology.
By contrast, the Mojave Desert is in a seismically active period. Seismic activity alternates between the two regions, the study suggests. According to their findings, "the lull in the Los Angeles basin began 1,000 years ago.

“'The past 1,000 years has been relatively quiet,' Dolan said, referring to what he calls the 'urban fault network' under the Los Angeles metropolitan area."

Dolan said that even the Northridge earthquake of 1994, the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history at the time, was 'a drop in the bucket' compared to the massive jolts that would strike the basin during a period of high seismic activity."

Of course, the authors are quick to supply the caveats:

• The urban fault network does not include the more distant San Andreas fault. Though the San Andreas is storing energy at a slower than average rate, a major quake along the fault is always possible. About 10 San Andreas “big ones” have occurred during the current lull on the urban fault network.

The authors developed their theory from the discovery of several “clusters” of intense seismic activity in the geological record. It is not yet known if the clusters are statistically significant.

The authors studied the geological record going back 12,000 years. During that period, they found several clusters of seismic “bursts,” with the most recent lasting 4,000 years and ending about 1,000 years ago. The seismic clusters were separated by periods of relative calm lasting about 1,500 to 2,000 years.
Remarkably, the lulls in the Los Angeles region corresponded with seismic clusters in the Mojave Desert, as described in 2000 by Thomas Rockwell of San Diego State University and his colleagues.

Which leads to Dolan's unproven phenomenological semi-empirical conclusion that:

“When we're having earthquakes in L.A., generally we don't have as many earthquakes in the Mojave,” and vice versa, Dolan said.

The study in Geology proposes a mechanism by which periods of high seismic activity alternate between the urban fault network and the Mojave Desert.

GUN CONTROL REPORT PROVES "WHILE FIGURES MAY NOT LIE, LIARS DO FIGURE" ... HOW ANTI-GUN MESSAGES ARE CREATED - PART ONE: QUOTE A CREDIBLE SOURCE...

U.S. most armed country with 90 guns per 100 people|Reuters

In a story reported by Laura MacInnis for Reuters, the reported quotes statistics and findings recently released in the Small Arms Survey 2007 published by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.

While the Reuters' reporter fairly presented the organization's findings without comment, the hidden subtext remains that America is a gun-obsessed nation and needs to be controlled.

From the report...

"U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies."

"'There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people,'  it said."

"India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people."

"Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals."

"On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38."

"France, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Germany were next, each with about 30 guns per 100 people, while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people."

Which proves what?  Even assuming that the methodology is sound, this report proves nothing. Apparently, its sole purpose is to place into the media "a statistic"  that is apparently presented by a "credible source" and which, due to its innocuous nature, is unlikely to be challenged.

Since these figures are going to be cited by anti-gun proponents in a variety of anti-gun messages, let us take a moment and see exactly who is behind the creation of these numbers.

Who Is Behind the Curtain?

Let us examine some of the statements which appear on the organization's web page located at  www.smallarmssurvey.org.

IS THIS WHAT WE REALLY WANT: A RETURN TO THE YEARS OF CLINTON'S CAMPAIGN CORRUPTION? ARE FOREIGN INTERESTS STILL PLAYING POLITICS USING AMERICAN CUTOUTS?

UPDATE:  A more amazing revealation from the Los Angeles Times which reports that Hsu is a wanted fugitive...

For the last 15 years, California authorities have been trying to figure out what happened to a businessman named Norman Hsu, who pleaded no contest to grand theft, agreed to serve up to three years in prison and then seemed to vanish.

"He is a fugitive," Ronald Smetana, who handled the case for the state attorney general, said in an interview. "Do you know where he is?"

Hsu, it seems, has been hiding in plain sight, at least for the last three years.

Since 2004, one Norman Hsu has been carving out a prominent place of honor among Democratic fundraisers. He has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions into party coffers, much of it earmarked for presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

In addition to making his own contributions, Hsu has honed the practice of assembling packets of checks from contributors who bear little resemblance to the usual Democratic deep pockets: A self-described apparel executive with a variety of business interests, Hsu has focused on delivering hefty contributions from citizens who live modest lives and are neophytes in the world of campaign giving.

Democratic fundraiser is a fugitive in plain sight|Los Angeles Times

An amazing story is being reported by the Wall Street Journal. One that brings back echoes of untoward fundraising on behalf of the democrats, and especially the Clintons.

According to published reports...

"One of the biggest sources of political donations to Hillary Rodham Clinton is a tiny, lime-green bungalow that lies under the flight path from San Francisco International Airport."

"Six members of the Paw family, each listing the house at 41 Shelbourne Ave. as their residence, have donated a combined $45,000 to the Democratic senator from New York since 2005, for her presidential campaign, her Senate re-election last year and her political action committee. In all, the six Paws have donated a total of $200,000 to Democratic candidates since 2005, election records show."

"It isn't obvious how the Paw family is able to afford such political largess. Records show they own a gift shop and live in a 1,280-square-foot house that they recently refinanced for $270,000. William Paw, the 64-year-old head of the household, is a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service who earns about $49,000 a year, according to a union representative. Alice Paw, also 64, is a homemaker. The couple's grown children have jobs ranging from account manager at a software company to "attendance liaison" at a local public high school. One is listed on campaign records as an executive at a mutual fund."

Is this the home of the millionaires next door?

wsj

On four separate dates this year, the Paw family, Mr. Hsu and five of his associates gave Mrs. Clinton a total of $47,500. In all, the family, Mr. Hsu and his associates have given Mrs. Clinton $133,000 since 2005 and a total of nearly $720,000 to all Democratic candidates.

"The Paws' political donations closely track donations made by Norman Hsu, a wealthy New York businessman in the apparel industry who once listed the Paw home as his address, according to public records. Mr. Hsu is one of the top fund-raisers for Mrs. Clinton's presidential campaign. He has hosted or co-hosted some of her most prominent money-raising events."

WILL MEXICO INSULT THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA BY REWARDING DEPORTED ILLEGAL ALIEN WITH A DIPLOMATIC PASSPORT?

I would go so far as to urge all Southern Californians to boycott any travel to Mexico if Mexico issues a diplomatic passport to Elvira Arellano, the recently deported illegal immigrant who has violated numerous laws of the United States including, but not limited to, illegal entry (twice), once for the purposes of producing an anchor baby, using forged identification credentials and social security number to apply for a job cleaning airplanes at the security-conscious Chicago O'Hare airport, and most seriously: ignoring a lawful court order mandating her deportation.

According to published reports, Arellano is the "Cindy Sheehan" of the illegal alien legalization movement who places a human face on the matter. Claiming she is fighting to be reunited with her 8-year-old son, an American by his anchor baby birth, the reports overlook the fact that she deliberately left her son behind when he was deported -- although ICE made special provisions to transport the mother and child out of the country.

It would be an outrage if Mexico granted her a diplomatic visa so that she could continue to represent legislation which would compromise the sovereignty and safety of the United States as well as destroy much of its social and financial infrastructure -- including healthcare, education, criminal proceedings and retirement benefits.

Why the Mexican President, Felipe Calderon entertained  her at all is mystifying.

MR. PRESIDENT: MY TWO CENTS REGARDING THE NEXT ATTORNEY GENERAL -- NOMINATE TED OLSON

Mr. President, now that the unfortunate Alberto Gonzales mess behind us (well sort of -- there still are those pesky democrat investigations), may I publicly urge you to consider nominating Ted Olson for the job. I believe that his past record of accomplishment speaks for itself. I believe that he will serve you well in a time of great political confusion and opportunity by reducing the chaos in the Department of Justice as well as restoring America's confidence in the Department and the FBI.

Who better than Olson to balance the terrorist dangers with the law required to serve and protect all Americans from any incursions on their Constitutionally-mandated rights.

While in private practice Olson represented convicted spy Jonathan Pollard  on his appeal to United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit claiming that during Pollard's trial, the life sentence he received was in violation of the plea bargain agreement, which had specifically taken life off the table.

[Readers Note: Ted Olson's wife was aboard  American Airlines flight 77 which crashed into the Pentagon.]

Of course, your team has already vetted Olson when his name was floated for a possible Supreme Court nomination. A better qualified and loyal Republican can not be easily found.

And, as an added bonus, you may remember that it was Ted Olson who  defended President Reagan during the Iran-Contra affair.

BEWARE HOUSTON: RED LIGHT CAMERAS NOW BI-DIRECTIONAL -- TO CATCH YOU "COMING & GOING!"

As reported in the Houston Chronicle, a new breed of  red-light camera is stealthily being installed by the city fathers in order to raise revenues. Surely, there are not that many accidents to justify the unprecedented use of  the cameras at more than 50 intersections. The cameras are bi-directional and can trap violators approaching from the opposite direction.

Other items of issue include public disclosure and the fee arrangement with the camera's vendor, American Traffic Solutions.

According to the Chronicle...

"The move to add more cameras, which had not been publicly disclosed, appears to conflict with the terms of a contract the City Council approved in 2006 with American Traffic Solutions Inc., the private company that installs and monitors the cameras."

"That agreement includes payment arrangements with the company for a total of 50 intersection "approaches," or cameras monitoring specific directions at a location. "

But did the city fathers move at warp speed to avoid the new Texas State law which takes effect in a few days that may have required the city to complete expensive traffic engineering studies prior to installing the cameras?

Again, quoting from the Chronicle...

"But department officials said Tuesday that they long had planned to increase the number of cameras at some locations, and they denied the contract limited that total to 50 intersections."

"These are different approaches at those same intersections," said Executive Assistant Chief Martha Montalvo, who supervises the program."

"Montalvo said the decision to add the new cameras had nothing to do with a new state law, which takes effect Saturday, that could require some cities to do engineering studies at new locations."

It's about safety, not money... the common refrain of city officials when confronted by angry citizens who feel that the city is out to make a buck rather than make them safer on the road.

"[Montalvo} also dismissed a common complaint that the new cameras were intended to generate more revenue, even as the new law requires that a portion of the fines go to a regional trauma center fund."

"This is not about revenue," she said. "This is about changing the behavior and public safety."

"Montalvo said late Tuesday that she was not aware of any briefings to

council members about the new cameras. But she said Police Chief Harold Hurtt had planned to make an announcement later this week."

The program seems to have its doubters...

"Randall Kallinen, a lawyer who complained about the cameras before the council Tuesday, said he doubts safety motivated the department to increase the number of cameras at the intersections."

"The idea for the red-light cameras is to pick the problem areas," he said. "Is it a problem in one direction, or both directions?"

Do it fast before the state law requirements become effective on September 1, 2007.

"HPD's acknowledgment of the new cameras comes as the council is expected Wednesday to consider state-mandated changes to the camera ordinance."

"A newly worded ordinance would defer much of the administrative procedures for managing the camera system to a new state law. The law requires the city to issue citations to motorists who turn illegally at monitored intersections."

Only motorists who do not fully stop and yield to traffic and pedestrians before turning on red would be cited, police have said.

WHEN A COMMUNIST ENDORSES A CLINTON/OBAMA DEMOCRATIC TICKET, DOES THAT SAY IT ALL?

According to a Reuters' dispatch

"Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro is tipping Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to team up and win the U.S. presidential election."

"The word today is that an apparently unbeatable ticket could be Hillary for president and Obama as her running mate," he wrote in an editorial column on U.S. presidents published on Tuesday by Cuba's Communist Party newspaper, Granma."

"At 81, Castro has outlasted nine U.S. presidents since his 1959 revolution turned Cuba into a thorn in Washington's side by building a communist society about 90 miles offshore from the United States."

"He said all U.S. presidential candidates seeking the "coveted" electoral college votes of Florida have had to demand a democratic government in Cuba to win the backing of the powerful Cuban exile community."

"Clinton and Obama, both senators, called for democratic change in Cuba last week."

What do you thing about two junior Senators, one with excessive baggage and a leaning toward Marxism and the other with little world-class experience, when they are openly endorsed as a democratic ticket choice by an ardent communist?

Is this a telling moment?

Why would Castro even care about U.S. politics, if it were not for his fervent hope that the decades long embargo on certain goods and services be lifted and Cubans be allowed unrestricted travel between the United States and Cuba?

UNION POWER GRAB: ALTERNATIVE TO FREEDOM? WILL SCHWARZENEGGER PASS THE TEST?

Traditionally, labor unions contain some of the most corrupt and violent organizers ever to coerce ordinary employees into handing over their hard-earned money so that the union officials can live in luxury and obtain the personal and professional benefits that come from being able to throw funds and votes at politicians.

Now, in return for the union's support, we find these very same politicians are seeking to gut the worker's right to determine union representation based on a secret ballot. These legislators are seeking to provide an alternate means to using a secret ballot: that of having anybody openly give the worker a card to check-off and then submitting that card with their claim of representation.

What happened to democracy? Are the democrats, once again, selling out their constituents in favor of the political special interests which keep them happily in office?

Consider Senate Bill 180 which has apparently passed both the Assembly and the Senate and is now headed to Governor Schwarzenegger's desk for approval.

The Legacy of Alberto Gonzales: "I solemnly swear to tell the truth as I know it, the whole truth as I believe it to be, and nothing but what I think you need to know... and pardon (pun intended) me for my faulty memory."

Now that Alberto Gonzales, the 80th Attorney General of the United States and the first Hispanic to serve in the position,  has resigned, it is time to put a portion of his career in perspective. Of course, in the final analysis, history will be the judge of whether or not he served the Presidency over the People of the United States.

His basic legacy is sure to be a new vagueness and lack of accountability in government officials when testifying before government investigators about their actions in the performance of  their sworn duties.

He's not that dumb...

Always a superb student, Gonzales started along a pathway to public service sporting a degree from the prestigious Harvard Law School. In fact, the only anomaly in his background was that he left the United States Air Force Academy prior to the start of his third year, which would have resulted in additional  military obligations, to pursue further political science studies at Rice University and  culminating in obtaining his Harvard Law Degree ... and then on to a fateful association with George Bush.

...until he is around the President, to whom he defers as is the custom of serving the Presidency.

There is no doubt that Gonzales is definitely a major Bush buddy and supporter. In 1994, he served as  general counsel to then-Texas Governor George W. Bush and was later appointed by the Governor to a position as Texas' 100th Secretary of State of Texas in 1997. He was then appointed by Governor Bush to the  Texas Supreme Court in 1999.

All-in-all, Gonzales seemed a decent fellow to most non-politicians when he assumed the role of United States Attorney General on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2005.

"Los Angeles Times: California without a Mexican"-- Bogus plea for corporate welfare and the legalization of illegal aliens.

In an op-ed piece titled "California without a Mexican," Tamar Jacoby, senior fellow of the Manhattan Institute, an organization primarily sponsored by pro-business concerns, makes the case for "immigration reform."

Of course, it plays directly into the talking points of the special interests who have bought many of our legislators and unduly influenced the current Administration. Many believe that the Administration's "get tough" enforcement policy is no more than another attempt to use the media to condition public sentiment to backing their previous SHAMnesty plans in the next congressional meeting so that Bush can be hailed as a human rights champion in the Jimmy Carter model.

First, the dreaded "the sky will be  falling" pronouncement...

"Workplace enforcement without immigration reform will cripple the economy -- and it will be Joe Public's fault."

Second, attack the Administration's current solution for curtailing out-of-control immigration...

"Federal immigration authorities are readying a new enforcement tool that could indeed, if applied effectively, all but cripple the California economy."

"The new weapon is a simple two-page letter that will go out next month to companies whose employees' names and Social Security numbers do not match those on record at the Social Security Administration."

"What makes these letters so potent? The SSA has been sending similar notices for years, but in the past, as long as a company had asked to see a worker's papers and filled out the proper forms, it was off the hook. Now the government is demanding that unauthorized employees be fired and threatening legal action if they aren't."

Wow! Legal action against those who have already broken our laws and who have forged or used bogus papers to bring chaos to our tax and social security programs -- what a concept!

Reiterate the dire consequences...

This is expected to trigger widespread layoffs -- self-policing by millions of small and medium-sized businesses in California and other states.

Play up the devastation to mom-and-pop businesses and conveniently forget to mention the more significant  impact on the major corporations... such as those that predominate the billion-dollar agribusiness operations and multi-million dollar hospitality industry -- including the big Vegas casinos and hotels which gush money for their owners.

Ignore the public benefits...  such as the reduced pressure on our current infrastructure: healthcare, education, social services, retirement benefits, crime ... which transfers the cost of  publicly subsidized labor back to the corporations who must become more responsible for paying a so-called "living wage" and include healthcare in their benefit packages.
