This story does not make sense. Why would the LAPD target Asian maternity hotels,” especially citing “possible related crimes” and “planning regulations [that] may have been violated” and totally ignore similar behavior and conditions relating to Mexican illegal aliens?
LAPD Takes Aim at Wave of Asian ‘Maternity Tourists’ -- A string of so-called “maternity hotels,” where Asian women come to give birth to babies who will automatically acquire a US passport — has recently drawn the attention of authorities.
Six pregnant Asian-looking women cross the road. Two others cross in the opposite direction. In a nearby store, about 10 compare baby clothing.
Something is happening in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Nearby, a string of so-called “maternity hotels,” where Asian women — often Chinese and Taiwanese — come to give birth to babies who will automatically acquire a US passport — has recently drawn the attention of authorities.
Since December, there have been 64 complaints, mostly involving the districts of Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights, Alex Garcia, an LA County planning department official told AFP.There is nothing illegal about foreign women giving birth in the United States. But federal officials are investigating possible related crimes, while local officials say planning regulations may have been violated.
Inspectors entered 16 of these lodgings for pregnant women, and found that five of them were operating as boarding houses for Chinese or Taiwanese women, he said. A 26-year-old woman, seven months pregnant, who offers the pseudonym Xui Li, has just arrived from Beijing, to give birth on US soil. As other compatriots, she hesitates before discussing the reason for coming with her. <Source: LAPD Takes Aim at Wave of Asian ‘Maternity Tourists’ | Alternet>
It is well known that Los Angeles is a sanctuary city – with the politicians and police turning their backs on illegal aliens except in the most egregious gang-related cases. The home of “Special Order 40".”
Officers shall not initiate police action with the objective of discovering the alien status of a person.
Officers shall not arrest nor book persons for violation of title 8, section 1325 of the United States Immigration code (Illegal Entry).
Critics of the measure point out that the mandate also prevents officers from obtaining immigration status from gang members, violent criminals, and other felons. S.O. 40 became a topic of public controversy in Los Angeles in the 1980s when Mayor of Los Angeles Tom Bradley declared the city to be a sanctuary city. The controversy arose again to an even greater magnitude in 2006 when Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa essentially made the same sanctuary-city declaration. <Source>
It is time that Los Angeles get a police Chief who is a professional law enforcement officer that is less a politician and more a police officer. Both former Chief Bratton and current Chief Beck appear to be more about obeisance to the politicians in office than enforcing laws already on the books.
Bottom line …
It is well known that pregnant Mexican illegal aliens show up at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Hospital and other hospitals and medical facilities in the Los Angeles area and their previous locations do not seem to be the subject of investigations. Is this “politically correct” selective enforcement?
