Already we are seeing the Obama Administration and the mainstream media starting to spin the story into one, not of a terrorist attack on his fellow soldiers, but of a deranged lone madman who was being persecuted for his religion and just snapped.
However, by all accounts, Hassan appears to be a marginal soldier – and I hate to dishonor combat soldiers by referring to this medical officer as a soldier – whose personal performance was so severely lacking as to make his efforts to the service almost worthless – and troublesome at best.
The fact that this was a premeditated act and that the Major allegedly used a religious phrase favored by terrorists should be enough to convict him and place him in front of a military firing squad.
We should also be prepared to see the usual suspects rushing to defend the indefensible and to insure that his civil rights are protected – even though he violated the civil rights of at least 42 other people.
Already the pundits are coming forward and suggesting that the situation is very “nuanced” and that ethnic and religious harassment must be taken into account when deciding Major Hasan’s fate. Of course, the anti-war crowd is claiming that it the United States foreign policy which pits Muslims against Muslims that is the “core” issue.
And there are those who claim that paranoid sociopaths who happen to be religious should not be allowed to be portrayed in the press as a member of that religion – but as a disaffected, deranged personality who acted on his own motivations – rather than on behalf of his religion. Of course, if this were true, how do you explain the other religious crazies now running about in the United States and elsewhere?
So no matter how the Obama Administration and the mainstream press may spin this matter – it is an open and shut case with no mitigating factors. Including the possibility that he may have been insulted because of his religion – try using that excuse among the tough guys in New Jersey and New York. Let him recover, be tried in a military court and executed.
