UPDATE: 01/24/08 -- as the night follows the day, the Internet gremlins have departed and all is right with the connectivity issue... calls to my ISP and the telephone company were fruitless as they knew "there seemed to be a problem," but were unable to explain its origins or provide any preventative information.
--- original story ---
Perhaps it is the influence of the full moon or, more likely, the unaccustomed all-saturating rain playing havoc with the telephone lines, but my DSL Internet connection is slower than the proverbial turtle. Screen flips are taking almost one minute -- slower than my old dial-up. Nothing in my computer configuration has changed. I have added no additional software. I have re-booted both the DSL modem (three solid green lights and the yellow activity light flickers with activity) and my Netgear router. It is one of those mysteries which seems to resolve itself by the next morning.
However, this would be a great opportunity for both myself and all my readers to consider how they might function tomorrow without an Internet connection.
What would you miss most? The news? The blogs? The Drudge Report? Being able to pay your bills via an Internet bill pay system? Signing on to work from home to check that last little detail that bothered you somewhere between leaving work and arriving home?
What would you do if your Internet connection was down for an extended period of time? Just how would you cope?
Of course, after overlooking the obvious -- that it would be a great time to take a vacation -- makes one think of all of the benefits and drawbacks of building a reliance on the Internet.
Since this Internet connection is slow and iffy -- I think that I will end this post while I still have some semblance of connectivity.
Here's hoping for a brighter tomorrow.
